News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

justacat

I looked at their site briefly and didn't quite see the answer to this, on the bottom of their FAQ (https://www.augur.net/faq/) it says:

Fees on the Augur protocol go directly to the market creator and REP holders who report and dispute outcomes. The Forecast Foundation does not recieve any fees from actions, trades, markets or use on the Augur protocol.

I guess this has to do with them being a decentralized marketplace, which as the article discusses does have some cool perks.

In the USA, PredictIt.org is a site that is also aimed at prediction, but they take a 10% fee on profit, and then a 5% fee on withdrawal. Seemingly a lot more volume on their markets than Augur at the moment, with some of their markets having hundreds of thousands of shares traded, and thousands of comments.

Edit: After I posted I now see that Gibsons77 gave a better and more concise answer to the question

Yea, I keep a mouse on the right and a trackpad on the left. It is a good combination.
I'm curious: How do you write code for Trello? I didn't realize there was an approach for this

That really does sound insanely great...I need to get to a situation like that.

> Plus the deletion of the SpaceX and Tesla facebook pages, when told over Twitter they existed was pretty funny.

Wait, did Elon not know about them and then just got them deleted upon finding out?

I'm in a pillow dilemma right now and have been wondering about this in the back of my mind for weeks - what position do you sleep in?
Very interesting. In the last 2 years I scare-tactic'd myself into seriously restricting my sugar (basically down to what the WHO would recommend for a person like myself) and immediately saw improvements in my skin, and not long after noticed that I don't get sick as often.

As well, I've adopted the practice of avoiding any eating after 7pm.

These two things combined resulted in me going from the 150s down to the 140s, seemingly only losing fat in the process.

All anecdotal but it has been more than enough to convince me that sugar (despite my deep, deep, deep, love for it) is not good for me.

this is so true

Well, sugar does cause inflammation, and the western diet is kind of built on sugar
Yea, that is the first thing I thought of when I saw this. PWAs could be made for this and I think could be awesome
Re:Ask HN: Is net neutrality overblown? on Friday December 15, 2017 @12:24PM (#15933351)
I'm not really qualified to speak on this, but the most annoying part about this is it seems like a new discussion every 6 months. It's like asking your roommate to not set fire to the kitchen, but every half hour you have to go stop them from doing it... at some point it almost feels easier to just have the kitchen on fire than to continually worry about the kitchen being on fire.

I assume that I'm not alone in this feeling.

This video freezes right before the excitement, I can tell because the sound keeps going. I blame a very complex conspiracy.
Re:What happens when you sell your startup? on Thursday November 09, 2017 @09:42AM (#15662745)
The stock and IPO reality of the business world bums me out, when a company's product is its stock, a lot of things can get compromised.
Re:Paradise Papers: Dear Tim Cook on Wednesday November 08, 2017 @11:12AM (#15653820)
All I want is a world with a single flat tax, is that too much to ask?
This is, unfortunately, very insightful, and also a very unfortunate persistent state of affairs.

I wonder how differently the world would look if companies didn't operate like this.

My works IT department also gets rid of those annoying gifs automagically...along with less annoying images often related to my job

The longer I'm in this field, the more clear this is to me. Being a good programmer takes a lot more than most people want to believe.
Re:Bill Gates switches to Android phone on Wednesday September 27, 2017 @10:38AM (#15348183)
I had real hopes for the Windows Phones, I thought they were really exploring a unique approach to the whole thing. I'm on Apple right now and it is the Apple ecosystem that keeps me here more than anything.
Re:Apple does right by users and advertisers are displeased on Thursday September 21, 2017 @10:49AM (#15303965)
Apple has definitely lacked vision since Jobs left, it has been the biggest issue in my opinion for them as a company. Cook has a lot of very valuable skills, but I've still found myself wondering, "What the what is going on at Apple!!..." (In a negative way)
Re:Ask HN: Does coding give you brain fog? on Tuesday August 15, 2017 @12:18PM (#15019586)
I've had a tendency of entering prolonged periods of focus throughout my life, and at this point I can feel my brain almost optimize to the task at hand, there is a type of shift.

For example, I played and performed music seriously for a period of time (no singing), and it was pointed out by a close friend that any performance that lasted more than an hour and my verbal center would basically crash. It would take at least 30 minutes or even hours before my brain would be able to start talking like a normal person again. Prior to this point in time I had purchased a pocket dictionary which I carried around, seemingly to combat this issue.

At present, when I have been working on something particularly engaging at work my wife notices because my ability to communicate does suffer.

It is interesting that you noted 3 days, just because I recently heard a researcher talking about how getting away for 3 days can have a cognitive benefit: https://www.rei.com/blog/camp/the-nature-fix-the-three-day-e...

As was mentioned, getting checked out by a doctor does sound like a prudent step.

I agree people choose Google, but at this point I expect I could switch search engines on a 100 people's phones, and you'd end up with a few categories:

1. People who don't even notice the change 2. People who notice, but are too lazy or ignorant to change it 3. People who notice, put off changing it, and leave it 4. People who notice, but consider searching results a commodity product at this point and don't care 5. People who notice, have a real preference AND actually change it back

Obviously I'm too lazy to write all of the possibilities, but I find the differences in search engines to be less and less noticeable at this point. Of course, I have no actual expertise in search engines beyond personal experience so this is just me typing on the internet.

Pretty much the only time I switch away from your search engine is when I want to extend the time constraint to "Past Year", if you fix that you should increase your total searches this next year by at least 200... http://i.imgur.com/0O15hJV.png

Re:From Secretary to Software Developer: The Hard Way on Thursday December 29, 2016 @11:02AM (#13278007)
Yea, I went to one of these years ago just when they were starting up. A couple of the students were very impressive at the end of the 12 weeks, but I was not. It is a lot of information at an extraordinary pace. I found that I could not sustain more than 11-12 hours a day of work, taking some of Saturday and all of Sunday off. I had no social life during this period outside of the camp, but did get an beginner level job offered to me at the end of it. It still took years before I felt comfortable saying that I was a developer.
Re:Is full-time work bad for our brains? on Friday July 29, 2016 @11:26AM (#12187430)
Thanks for the reply. I've been easing my way in with just 30sec on, 30 sec off for 5 minutes a day. I did two sets on day, and had to get up early the next day and was wiped out.

Good to hear your experience!

Re:Is full-time work bad for our brains? on Monday July 18, 2016 @06:08PM (#12118327)
Kind of off-topic, but what has your experience with HIIT and sleep been? I am just starting, and being somewhat obsessive about sleep would be interested to hear your experience.

I know there’s a variety of led lighting options out there, do you have any recommendations based on your experience?
Dude…getting shredded has always been the cure.
