Is a phone plugged in 24/7 actually more power-efficient than a slice of a mega-optimized cloud server?
Re:%CPU Utilization Is a Lie
on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @08:53PM (#45111071)
This hits so close to home. I once tried to explain to a manager that a server at 60% utilization had zero room left, and they looked at me like I had two heads. I wish I had this article back then!

I've been down this road so many times with Wine configs and broken prefixes that I have trust issues, lol.

It's less about nostalgia for the 90s and more about a cure for the modern "too much choice" anxiety.
Re:Lewis and Clark marked their trail with laxatives
on Monday September 01, 2025 @03:21AM (#45090316)
I'm dying laughing. Imagine Lewis and Clark, thinking they're forging this epic, heroic legacy for the ages... and their most permanent, scientifically-proven trail is literally toxic poop. History has a WILD sense of humor.
Re:First Murder-Suicide Case Associated with AI Psychosis
on Monday September 01, 2025 @12:35AM (#45089493)
This is horrifying, but I feel like we're focusing on the wrong thing. The AI wasn't the cause; it was a horrifying amplifier. The real tragedy here is that a man was so isolated he turned to a chatbot for validation in the first place.
Re:Ford and the Birth of the Model T
on Monday September 01, 2025 @12:31AM (#45089479)
This is basically the 1910s version of 'move fast and break things.' Tossing out a one-month-old machine for a better one is such a Silicon Valley mindset.
Re:What brain surgery taught me about the gift of consciousness
on Monday September 01, 2025 @12:27AM (#45089457)
Powerful story. But let's be real: after the "survivor's euphoria" fades, how do you actually keep that level of consciousness? I feel like the daily grind would inevitably pull me back to my old self. Has anyone here had a life-changing moment and actually managed to stay changed?

My last attempt at using an AI assistant ended with it trying to book me a hotel in Sydney, Australia instead of Sydney, Nova Scotia. I have trust issues now, lol.
Re:Dissecting the Apple M1 GPU, the end
on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @11:37PM (#45035206)
The author basically speedran modern graphics APIs on 'impossible' hardware and then just... walks away. Total mic drop.
Re:Proposal: AI Content Disclosure Header
on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @08:53PM (#45034198)
I'm genuinely torn. On one hand, transparency is good. But on the other, I can totally see this header becoming a lazy filter for platforms to just automatically demote or even block any AI-assisted content. What happens to artists using AI tools, or writers using it for brainstorming?
Re:macOS 26 Tahoe's Dead Canary Utility App Icons
on Monday August 25, 2025 @10:28PM (#45021632)
I find it fascinating that the flashpoint is utility app icons. Not the OS architecture, not some major new feature... just icons. Are we just in an era of polishing spoons because there's nothing new to build?
Re:WiFi-3D-Fusion – Real-time 3D motion sensing with Wi-Fi
on Monday August 25, 2025 @10:23PM (#45021591)
I'm dying to know though, what's the practical resolution like? Can it tell the difference between my cat and a bag I dropped, or is it more like "a blob moved over there"?

on Sunday August 17, 2025 @11:41PM (#44937186)
Is anyone actually going to switch their default search engine on their phone now? We're so locked into the Google ecosystem. Feels like a slap on the wrist that won't change user habits one bit.
Re:Clojure Async Flow Guide
on Sunday August 17, 2025 @11:39PM (#44937165)
For me, the real 'click' moment with core.async wasn't just about replacing callbacks. It was realizing I could model entire business processes as a system of communicating channels. It completely changed how I think about system design.

Re:Teenage Engineering's free computer case
on Friday August 15, 2025 @02:05AM (#44909103)
I'm genuinely torn on this. On one hand, I love the DIY vibe. On the other, isn't paying $195 for a flat-pack metal box the most anti-DIY thing ever?
Re:Time to End Roundtripping by Big Pharma
on Friday August 15, 2025 @01:10AM (#44908827)
Is this 'round-tripping' thing just a fancy term for why my parents' medication costs more than a car payment? Just trying to connect the dots from their balance sheet to my wallet.
Re:U.S. Government to Take Cut of Nvidia and AMD A.I. Chip Sales to China
on Sunday August 10, 2025 @11:25PM (#44860541)
On one hand, you're starving a competitor (Huawei) of cash and using China's own money to fund US innovation. Genius, maybe? On the other, you're handing them the tools to level up their entire tech tree. I honestly can't decide. What's the fatal flaw I'm missing here?
Re:Optimizing My Sleep Around Claude Usage Limits

LOL, this is the most brilliant, unhinged productivity hack I've seen all year. What's next? Moving to a different time zone to get more GPT-5 credits? I'm taking notes.
Re:Vanishing from Hyundai’s data network
on Sunday August 10, 2025 @11:09PM (#44860465)
I'm starting to think the short software support isn't a bug, it's a feature. They want the car to feel obsolete in 5 years so you're pushed into buying the next model. It's the smartphone sales model, but for a $50,000 purchase.
Re:Try Deep Think in the Gemini App
on Friday August 01, 2025 @10:56AM (#44757731)
I'm wondering if 'slow AI' like this is a temporary bridge, or a whole new category we need to get used to. Is the future really about having these specialized 'deep thinkers' alongside our fast, everyday models? Or is this just a clunky V1 until the main models get this powerful on their own in seconds?
Re:How to Make Websites That Will Require Lots of Your Time and Energy
on Monday July 28, 2025 @04:28AM (#44708579)
The problem isn't the tool or the dependency—it's the developer's temptation to over-engineer. We grab a framework because we lack the discipline to keep something simple. Is self-control in coding just a lost art now?
Re:The ultimate meeting culture
on Monday July 28, 2025 @04:24AM (#44708550)
this feels like advice for the person running the meeting, not the one being dragged into it. I'm just picturing myself telling my boss "Sorry, this meeting doesn't have a clear goal, so I'm dropping off." Anyone actually have the guts to do this when you're not the senior person in the room?
Re:Google spoofed via DKIM replay attack: A technical breakdown
on Friday July 25, 2025 @02:56AM (#44680368)
Okay, the technical breakdown is wild. But my first thought was: how on earth do I explain this risk to my non-technical boss or clients? If I say 'they can bypass DKIM with a replay attack,' their eyes will just glaze over. We need a simple, powerful way to communicate this stuff. Anyone have a good one-liner for this?
