To be fair, hiring intelligence is not easy.
Unfortunately an extravagant ballroom and war crimes are much cheaper than "feed everyone forever."
> do something other than mining
Yep: meth. Source: extended family in coal country where everyone has massive substance abuse problems.
Maybe they had it and wisely decided to get rid of it.
As far as I can tell, the actual argument is "DHH likes racecars and ergo is a hypocrite for reducing software engineering to economics." Points for originality but maybe not for soundness.
In fact it might even reinforce the point. How many people get paid to drive racecars? Not a lot. It is a hobby for the rich.
As much as I cannot stand DHH, this article felt like so much wishful thinking. DHH being a terrible person does not make him wrong about the future direction of software.
Will artisanal, handcrafted software continue to exist? Yes. Will someone be willing to pay me a comfortable salary to write it? Doubtful.
I was just expecting something bigger than the dotcom pop not vastly smaller.
If this is the bubble bursting, it's pretty anticlimactic.
"I stopped smoking during work hours but still got lung cancer?!?"
The bans are very lackadaisically enforced, and this is in a state where the ban is actually mandated by law (Missouri). My daughter says in high school kids regularly have phones out in class. And a ban even if enforced would not keep kids off these harmful platforms for the many other hours in the day.
Why anyone would expect phone bans to improve mental health is beyond me when the majority of phone use is not happening at school.
Improve grades, improve classroom behavior, maybe. What about those?
I was more trying to say this metric is meaningless because being "deplatformed" has become a point of pride these people actively seek. And I did read it.
It's whatever shareholders want it to be.
I worked at a regional state uni in middle of nowhere Midwest for 10 years. A non negligible number of ultra right provocateurs would come to campus and say hateful culture wars shit for no purpose but to "own the libs" and post about it on social media.
The fact that some students complain about it is not surprising -- it's pretty much the intended effect. And I guess now that goes on a list so that right wing groups can fundraise off of it.
Loved helix and batteries included philosophy but was wishing for more batteries. Specifically the lack of a good diff viewer. Yes I can create a shortcut to lazygit but the way swapping between processes worked was buggy and uncomfortable.
And even though abstractly I like helix's keyboard model better than vim, I wish there was a way to just switch to vim mode because it is too ingrained.
Maybe this fork can address some of this either directly or by allowing plugins.
I have had good luck with an old candy bar style dumb phone from Jethro Mobile for my teen.
I say I am reading the text, but really it's a simple loop moving eyes left then right then repeat.

AI haters simultaneously want to rob AI of intelligence and agency and insist it is just a dumb tool but then in the next breath want to say the person who commands it also has no agency or intelligence.
Tipping in a drive thru or countertop is a different conversation from a sit down restaurant as far as I'm concerned.
It's a collective action problem, a massive scale prisoner's dilemma where if everyone cooperated we could be in a better world but that just sweetens the social rewards for those who turn traitor and keep paying the tip. And if we collectively do not hit the "tipping point" and force employers to pay better then the employees just suffer. And in the mean time I enjoy a meal that is cheaper than the market can bear because the whole system is propped up by this system of cost misdirection that I have sidestepped. So I am getting an unfairly cheap meal.
No one is worried about Grandpa's opinion here.
Mainly because it makes you look like a tremendous douchebag and does immediate harm to real employees for an intangible cause that looks like grandstanding. I say this as a person who hates tipping but mechanically leaves 20%.
Avoiding ultra processed foods vastly predates MAHA.
That is great until you have 12 similar windows open and your os window manager smooshes them into one indistinguishable stack. And if I want a window from app A to stick side by side with a corresponding window from app B you have few options. As opposed to tmux I can organize however I want and combine any arbitrary apps into a workspace. Plus RAM usage difference is night and day.
Idk if you are managing k8s stuff you are probably in a terminal already. Staying in a terminal is nice. Plus having persistent multiplexer sessions is a big deal in locked down corporate environments.
I appreciate the tui.
Yazi plus bash in a split terminal?
Really great remote ssh support. As of recently you can have ssh workspaces and local workspaces in the same nav structure.
It also supports building arbitrary custom UI plugins that can either run in a pane or background.
I prefer its hotkey setup over zellij. Only thing I prefer about zellij are the kdl layouts.
Yes ironically its AI selling points are not at all helpful for me. Just a solid multiplexer.
It's especially bad when it comes to parenting.
Me: "I don't let my kids have iPads."
Other parent: "YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME? FUCK YOU!"
See Hamlet, who famously lost everything after basing his charitable giving strategy on pure reason.
Yes but we don't let people go buy a tank and say "ok now it's up to you to use this wisely." Regulations exist for a reason.
I'll gladly take my chances with the exo suit squirrel over the evil villain.
Still not existential risk. A bit hyperbolic I admit.
