Re:The 2-Year Apartment Rule on Thursday June 18, 2026 @05:20AM (#48582869)
I feel sorry for the author if they ever manage to buy a house or apartment. The two year rule of their experience (not mine) will suddenly accelerate!
Re:The Future of Everything Is Lies, I Guess: Culture on Thursday April 09, 2026 @04:13PM (#47709181)
With the current direction of this industry, I fear you will come back to something that is both unrecognisable and terrifying.
Re:Inner-Platform Effect on Sunday February 15, 2026 @06:40PM (#47028987)
Omit the key and store it in a single json column. The worst of all worlds!
Re:STFU on Saturday January 17, 2026 @09:17AM (#46658255)
You've never met my neighbours! No seriously. Some people are just jerks.
Re:Logging Sucks on Sunday December 21, 2025 @06:11PM (#46349595)
The domain and article just a long-form advert for the author's observability sass. Oddly it's free, but you have to sign up for Cloudlfare, where the author is currently employed.

It's seems they are playing the long-long game!

All snarkiness aside, I learned a few things from the article. And I might even sign up to the sass since I already have a CF account.

I have a tiny long-haired dog (the first dog I've ever had) and I'm glad our first trainer/behaviourist mentioned the dangers of foxtails to us. We casually asked the vet if it was a problem and she said they see around 2-3 animals a week with issues caused by foxtails during the late summer/early autumn months. This is in the Southern UK. It's been getting drier and drier every year. And subsequently more and more foxtails seem to be appearing.

The main issue we've found is she gets them stuck under her "armpits" and under the tail. Places that make them very difficult to find. Even more insidious is when they embed themselves in the harness, only to make an appearance weeks or months later when the outdoor foxtails have mostly been cut down.

The problem is that they can work their way under the skin with a barbed spike that is one-way only. So if they get deep enough the only remedy is to cut the skin with a scalpel - by the vet of course.

Re:Show HN: Explore what the browser exposes about you on Saturday November 29, 2025 @05:12AM (#46086430)
I would love to be able to toggle an attribute off/on to see what affect each has on the uniqueness of my fingerprint. My guess is that there are a handful of _very_ unique things, that if obscured, would make one less recognisable.
Re:The realities of being a pop star on Saturday November 22, 2025 @07:31PM (#46019619)
I never quite understood this “tell”. I use the word all the time. As do a lot of the people I have know. Written and spoken.

Is this maybe an American thing? Ie it’s just not used much there?

Re:Cloudflare Global Network experiencing issues on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @07:05AM (#45964276)
The problem is, I still get the wrong end of the stick when AWS or CF go down! Management doesn't care, understandably. They just want the money to keep coming in. It's hard to convince them that this is a pretty big problem. The only thing that will calm them down a bit is to tell them Twitter is also down. If that doesn't get them, I say ChatGPT is also down. Now NOBODY will get any work done! lol.
Re:I Am Mark Zuckerberg on Sunday November 09, 2025 @10:52AM (#45866422)
I have [email protected] because first.last was already taken.

Just curious, do gmail accounts ever expire? Will I ever get the chance to snag the other one? Or does it forever belong to my nemesis and life-long enemy?

What really annoys me is the variance in corner radius now. Because some apps have released an upgrade and others haven't.
Your link doesn't counter GP's comment in any way. The extra conotext is appreciated though.
Re:Rails on SQLite: new ways to cause outages on Friday September 12, 2025 @04:03AM (#45219845)
What's new is that it's now being recommended for use in production, not just development. It's also now what they want you to use for caching, artifact storage and just about everything else that use to use "Technology X".

I can see the reasoning behind it. Simplicity. But I'm waiting for the horror stories like this one to die down before making a final judgement. It just doesn't _feel_ right to me after doing it differently for 20+ years.

Re:How can England possibly be running out of water? on Tuesday September 09, 2025 @11:27AM (#45183308)
Agreed! I have a few around me, and to be honest I didn't even realise they were there for a few years until I really started exploring the area on foot. They are lovely.

So I don't know what the objections were about. You can easily ignore them, and just as easily enjoy them. But they are hardly going to "destroy the environment".

That said, they would of course destroy "some" environment. I'm not aware of the specific objections in this case. So I'll leave an open mind until I do.

Re:'Gentle Parenting' My Smartphone Addiction on Thursday July 17, 2025 @02:46AM (#44590438)
Just curious. Is it absolutely necessary to have the phone in your bedroom? My partner struggled for a long time with being “unable to sleep” until I pointed out that I also can’t sleep due to the dim blue light coming from the other side of the bed.

So we made a rule. Leave the phones elsewhere. Ever since we’ve been sleeping through the night.

Re:A 37-year-old wanting to learn computer science on Saturday July 05, 2025 @10:54AM (#44473187)
Ageism is as real as any other prejudice. And unfortunately it's just a difficult to prove. I've seen the faces of the room full of "kids" (yea, that's reverse ageism I suppose) when doing remote interviews and watched them drop as soon as I appear on the screen.

Then it's just a matter of speeding me through the interview until they can find the candidate with the "right team dynamic" or "culture fit" etc. The excuses I've heard are quite amusing, but transparent.

Re:Getting Past Procastination on Sunday June 08, 2025 @03:51AM (#44215407)
It most definitely does work the other way around. The problem of course is that you can’t just wait for motivation to appear. But you can start an action.

I’m just stating the obvious, but I find it odd that the author states the opposite isn’t true.

Re:The Great Displacement Is Already Well Underway on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @03:49PM (#43976912)
I’m on safari mobile and ended up in an endless loop. I had to use reader mode to get out of it.
Re:Monty Python and the Holy Grail became a comedy legend on Sunday April 13, 2025 @05:25AM (#43671386)
Just curious. How does the leading word "How" get missed off from the headline to the submission headline? Its a totally different sentence now. Is there a word limit to HN headlines?
Well at least we redeemed ourselves with NFTs huh?
Re:RubyUI (Former PhlexUI): Ruby Gem for RubyUI Components on Wednesday April 02, 2025 @04:00AM (#43554557)
Just curious why the decision was made to go with PascalCase for the DSL? Is this meant to help React devs feel at home? Seems very un-Rubylike.
Re:Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017) on Saturday February 22, 2025 @11:33AM (#43140442)
Yes, everyone pays taxes into the system. But don't think for a moment that when musk et.al. are done with their purge that your tax rate will magicaly plummet to 2%. It's going to either stay the same or go up. Unless you are in the 1%. In which case, you can start your celebration now.
Re:Do-nothing scripting: the key to gradual automation (2019) on Sunday February 09, 2025 @03:58AM (#42989432)
It goes by many names. I believe the original name was checklist. It used to be written on paper by the ancient ones and followed step by step until the task was complete.

I can't wait for the npm package. /s

Re:Make the Most Of Your Burl on Sunday December 01, 2024 @09:39AM (#42288661)
In the UK there are maker spaces of all varieties. But you are right, woodworking spaces need room for the equipment. If you are a hand-tool only woodworker, then there isn't really a need to use someone else's (unsharpened) tools.

I'd love to see a site like this for the US, Canada and/or Europe. https://openworkshopnetwork.com/

It's all in the delivery
Re:The almost lost art of rosin potatoes on Saturday November 02, 2024 @05:21PM (#42029299)
Explain how you cook jacket potatoes then. Keep em in the side pocket of your jacket for a week or so until it's ready to eat?
Re:How to Train Yourself to Go to Sleep Earlier on Friday November 01, 2024 @05:18PM (#42021646)
Could you elaborate? Was it from total exhaustion? Were you taught a special technique to help you sleep? Or was it from knowing you MUST get your rest or you'll suffer the entire next day?
Re:How long til we're all on Ozempic? on Friday October 11, 2024 @04:32PM (#41813436)
It really is a sad situation. As an American who spent the first 30 years of life in the US and over 20 in Europe, the difference is striking. However... here in the UK I see more and more "American-sized" people every year. _Something_ is changing. In the food and/or habits of the average Brit.

Anecdotally I would say Europeans as whole are getting ever so slighty larger. But just not at the rate as Americans. Ozempic seems like a god-send.

Re:Ruby's official documentation just got a new look on Sunday August 25, 2024 @03:12AM (#41345134)
Accessibility-wise it has problems. Font-size, colour, contrast to name a few. And overuse of bold. When everything has emphasis, nothing does.

And green? How did that get approved?

I'm glad things are still moving in the Ruby community. I use it every day. But Elixir is winning the mind-share battle over Ruby at $dayjob these days. And their documents is second to none. One of the best that I've used.
