Re:FDA Approves First CRISPR Cows for Beef on Saturday March 26, 2022 @01:30AM (#30809493)
Not in the least. What’s so disgusting about it? Totally concerned about “patented life” however.
Re:The quest to make a 'contagious' animal vaccine on Tuesday March 22, 2022 @10:21AM (#30766424)
That’s not true. I recently restarted my subscription to NG and NG History and they have detailed, in depth long form articles that aren’t just pop fluff.

Anil Reddy is an absolute genius.

I would really appreciate if they ate the Japanese beetle as well. Those things really take a toll on my orchard in May/June
Re:Amazon announces 20-for-1 stock split, $10B buyback on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @05:09PM (#30620634)
This is fantastic, will really make the Amazon stock much more accessible.
I’ve used their soap for a while. The messages are one thing but they make a fantastic product. It has the highest EWG rating, is made of all natural ingredients and has never had phthalates, parabens etc. To top it all off it’s a good product that’s sudsy and actually gets you clean.
One is enjoys your own company and the other is an excuse because you’re too anxious to socialize but would like to and feel lonely otherwise.
I went back and watched his older games. He has some very interesting moves all the way back when he was 13.
Re:Vijayanagara – The Last Emperors of South India [audio] on Sunday February 20, 2022 @01:22AM (#30403672)
I’ve been trying to find pre colonial history textbooks/books on India especially those specifically about South Indian empires. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Yes they have. The falcon heavy has 27 engines. How are you so confidently saying they haven’t?
Re:A bevy of rovers heading for the Moon on Wednesday February 16, 2022 @11:51AM (#30362332)
That’s like saying having hundreds of airplanes in the sky at all times is an an insane amount in 1930.
Re:Trudeau Invokes Emergencies Act on Monday February 14, 2022 @06:38PM (#30340155)
Good, blocking critical infrastructure and affecting hundreds of thousands of bottom lines is a crime.
I don’t even feel like a bad person saying I hope they all die of Covid.
Where are we going with this? In the best case scenario the complete decoding of how brain signals work meaning true telepathy, flawless alternate reality generation, human distributed computing, instantaneous knowledge transfer, cure for persistent mental illness, consciousness transfer, immortality, intelligence argumentation etc. The list is pretty much endless.
Yes everyone is aware of what happens if you completely do away with ethics in science. Moderation is key here, the pendulum has swung too far to the other extreme from your example.
Obviously caste has been a construct that has been around for a very long time but encoding it into government, the army, law and the judiciary was a British tool.
They literally had divisions in the army that were caste based, something not seen in the prior centuries. What are you talking about? Do you have any sources?
That’s what happens when you restrict the best and the brightest from joining our universities and staying on on H1Bs afterwards.
The British didn’t destroy the caste system. They rigidly enforced it since it fit cleanly into their “divide and conquer” strategy.
Re:Resources to encourage children to learn to code on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @12:17PM (#30275183)
I theory yes. In practice with kids, the iPad/laptop is much easier to get enjoyment out of and kids inevitably end up choosing it over going outside.
Re:Resources to encourage children to learn to code on Wednesday February 09, 2022 @12:16PM (#30275167)
Seriously, I’m keeping my kid away from screens and phones for as long as possible in this society. I estimate I can atleast get to 4-5 years of age before having to use a computer becomes somewhat inevitable.
That’s not the relevant metric unless you take population density into account.
Re:Ask HN: What are your hobbies? on Sunday February 06, 2022 @04:35PM (#30237248)
I have a lathe and CNC machine and want to make a clock from scratch out of brass. Do you have a specific design you can recommend? What additional items do I need (I assume an indexing wheel for the gears)? I know of clickspring, was looking for something a little bit simpler.
Re:Ask HN: What are your hobbies? on Sunday February 06, 2022 @04:32PM (#30237223)
What exact welding machine would you recommend for someone that has never done it before but wants to build a significant structures (a greenhouse, bunk bed, work table etc.)? What YouTube channel or books/other resources do you recommend?
Switzerland is around 40,000 sq km to the US’ 10,000,000 sq km. I don’t think you understand the scale of what electrification of lines in the US would mean.
That sounds like a testament to a successful policy of checking vaccine card. That study would be more illuminating if it were done in some place with no checks.
Re:Teachers are leaving and few people choosing the field on Sunday February 06, 2022 @01:01PM (#30235039)
It’s definitely not hard work relative to other fields. That plus 3 months off and a relatively short day and low barriers for entry make this a no brainer for many, many people.
Yes. It’s much, much cheaper to carry power with you rather than electrify hundreds of thousands of miles of rail.
Re:There Is a Much Larger Problem Than the Great Resignation on Friday February 04, 2022 @12:39PM (#30209953)
The underlying here is people don’t want to “work hard” for decades because that is no longer considered a good life.
Re:Ask HN: Recommendations for WFH Office Ergonomics on Friday February 04, 2022 @12:37PM (#30209916)
Spend $800 and get a second hand Aeron. I haven’t had back pain issues in years. Also get a very large table and keep it clear. All the extra space really helps keeps me in the working mindset. Besides that, make sure your monitor is not placed too high above your eyeline.
