Well yeah. They're releasing spiders!
Re:The superior use of OOP on Thursday September 17, 2009 @06:22PM (#829108)
The best OOP advice I ever read was "model the solution, not the problem". It sounds obvious in retrospect, but only in retrospect.
Re:Coding Emacs's M-x in Lisp on Thursday September 10, 2009 @02:06AM (#814756)
No. I mean, I understand it just fine, I just hate the structure of it. Something about it causes revulsion, something that would probably go away if I actually sat down and learned lisp.

    (if (and (not (null suggest-key-bindings))
My C-oriented brain screams bloody murder at this. (I still want to learn Clojure.)
Agreed. If he came to Seattle, I'd show up/donate/spend money/whatnot.
Re:The Value of Game Ideas on Monday August 31, 2009 @07:21PM (#796926)
I could tell you, but then I'd have to segfault you.

> The low just got lower.

That would depend on the wife.

Re:SnapTalent (YC W08) Shuts Down on Monday August 17, 2009 @06:18PM (#769255)
And how many of those failures actually pay back investors instead of burning through all their cash first?

This is quite possibly the most responsible failure I've ever read about.

Re:Ask HN: How did you get your product idea? on Wednesday August 12, 2009 @06:48PM (#759468)
No one's making the product I desire, so after years of searching and waiting I have decided to just make the darned thing myself.
Re:Thinkgeek Redesign on Monday August 10, 2009 @07:21PM (#754302)
I bought a cute little Martian file server from them years ago when they sold interesting hardware.
Re:Poll: What level general education did you complete ? on Monday August 10, 2009 @05:48PM (#754142)
High School and One Year of College.
Re:Thinkgeek Redesign on Monday August 10, 2009 @05:31PM (#754109)
MY EYES!!!

Gah! "More Loud Colorful Clutter" does not automatically equal "Better". It's a store for geeks, not the MySpace crowd.

Re:Free Kevin Mitnick on Tuesday August 04, 2009 @04:37PM (#742111)
Free Kevin Mitnick? Figures. I already shelled out a months worth of pay for one last year.
Re:Interface Zen: Zenning out while writing code (1999) on Tuesday August 04, 2009 @04:26PM (#742077)
As a former Vi user, I can kinda grok not liking arrow keys.

(_My_ arrow keys are the ones on the numeric keypad -- I almost never use Numlock. This is a hold-over from my first computer: An IBM PCjr that had arrow keys in a diamond layout instead of that hateful inverted-T layout that cramps one's thumb.)

I'd like to see all this technology, knowledge, and power put to use to feed, clothe, and house every person on the planet. There's no non-political reason we can't do this, but our current cultures won't allow for it.

I'd like to be able to pursue my passions and hobbies without having to waste the vast majority of my life in a day job just to survive. Life is to goddamned short for this madness.

I predict there is a 100% chance that he is either right or wrong.
Re:Scala Lifting Off on Friday July 10, 2009 @06:09PM (#698511)
How does Scala compare with Clojure? (I'd like to learn a lispy/fp language and these two are currently at the top of my list.)
Pornographic films have storylines?
Re:Breaking your legs to make yourself taller. on Wednesday July 01, 2009 @07:04PM (#683531)
Wake me when they can give me surgery to make me smarter.
Re:There Really Is No Secret on Wednesday July 01, 2009 @05:45PM (#683436)
There is no secret ingredient!
Re:The Anti-If Campaign on Thursday June 25, 2009 @12:50PM (#674000)
This strikes me as particularly funny as I'm working on a module of code where I had to use a type field and an 'if' statement to get around a dynamic cast that was killing performance.

(Virtual functions were not an option as this was taking place inside an STL '==' comparator.)

Re:The Fierce Idiocy of "New" on Monday June 15, 2009 @04:16PM (#659010)
I had forgotten all about She Hates My Futon! He never finished it?

That's... that's just awful.

I'm pretty sure that's what you'd have to do, too.

Re:The Better You Program, The Worse You Communicate on Friday June 05, 2009 @06:40PM (#644157)
All green of skin. 800 centuries ago their bodily fluids include the birth of half-breeds. For the fundamental truth and self-determination of the cosmos. For dark is the suede that mows like a harvest.
Re:The Million Dollar Programming Prize on Friday May 29, 2009 @03:50PM (#632668)
First one to solve the error gets a million dollars?
Re:The Many Worlds of Hugh Everett on Wednesday May 20, 2009 @07:37PM (#619534)
I've never like the Multiple Worlds interpretation -- each bifurcation splits the entire universe and there are a stupendous number of bifurcations every nanosecond, resulting in a ridiculous number of universes made of energy and matter (which is also energy).

So... where does all that extra energy come from?

Re:Sam Odio and the EFF vs. Apple Inc. on Friday May 01, 2009 @07:10PM (#589289)
It pains me as well (I'll be getting a nice, shiny 8-core system in two months) but rationalize it with my realization that pretty much every company is evil -- I give my hard-earned paycheck to the least evil company that provides what I'm looking for.
Re:How Many CPU Cores Do You Need? : Are We There Yet? on Thursday April 30, 2009 @07:28PM (#587755)
I'm saving up for an 8-core mac for a project I'm working on, and I'd prefer at least 16 (which is not economically feasible at the moment).
