Résumé/CV: https://gardiner.today

LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/jordsta

Email: [email protected]

Design engineer with 18+ years of experience. I make the part of the product people touch.

- Canva: 2.5 years on the Brand Templates enterprise team. Sole frontend engineer on Brand Style Match (featured at Canva Create), and helped with a multi-year undertaking to remove what their most senior engineer called Canva's biggest ever piece of tech debt.

- Hai! Coffee: my SwiftUI pour-over timer that learns from each brew, designed for someone half awake at the kettle.

- ha-desky: an open-source Home Assistant integration that drives my Desky standing desk over the Bluetooth already in its controller, so that I can do cool automations like sitting/standing on a schedule. My first Python repo, now in the HACS default store.

The quickest way to get to know me is to ask my site:

claude mcp add --transport http gardiner https://gardiner.today/mcp

Or paste your job ad into Ardo, my AI agent at https://gardiner.today and it'll tell you how I match.

I hold a firm line on accessibility, and I don't ship code I can't explain.

Looking for: design engineer or senior frontend, full-time, on a team that cares about craft.

Re:Guest WiFi using a QR code on Wednesday July 13, 2022 @03:12AM (#32079816)
It might have to be setup by an Airbnb host but the past few places I've stayed at had the ability to press a button inside the Airbnb app to automatically connect to their WiFi. Definitely saves some of the less tech-savvy hosts from having to figure out how to create a WiFi QR Code and print it out

If you so happen to have a Google Home you can also now ask the Google Assistant to find your iPhone too: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/04/14/google-assistant-locate...
Re:Erlang Ecosystem Foundation on Thursday February 28, 2019 @11:32PM (#19277940)
There's a really nice icon used as the favicon on their website, shame it's seemingly not used anywhere on the web page itself.

Google cache of the page, since we've given the site the hug of death: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https:/...
@foone is very quickly becoming my favourite account to follow on Twitter. He posts at least one super insightful Twitter thread every day or two about some fascinating quirk about computing history. Beats hitting Wikipedia:Special:Random for sure.
Re:iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have charging issues on Thursday October 04, 2018 @05:04AM (#18138257)
What a waste of a paid Medium article. I could've read more detail on a free blog post elsewhere.
Re:Why SQLite Does Not Use Git on Wednesday April 11, 2018 @02:26AM (#16808540)
This is why I can't take any of this reasoning from SQLite seriously at all. The feeling I gather from this webpage is 'Hey, I made something I think is better than a popular thing, therefore every project I author from now on must use my thing and here are X number of refutable reasons why'

I personally think this framework is pretty cool, however unlike an earlier version of it that featured here on HN[1], the Docs and Tutorials section of the site no longer appear to work with Javascript disabled.

Re:Why I Moved to Vue.js from Angular 2 on Tuesday February 14, 2017 @09:38PM (#13649271)
I read the title of this article wrong, thinking it was 'Why I Moved to Angular 2 from Vue.js' before reading it a second time. It's given me a thought though: has anyone ever moved from Vue.js back to the controversial Angular 2?
The year after I finished at Griffith, they implemented a 'Unlimited free internet downloads during off-peak hours' policy. Just reading up on it though, it's not as good value as I first thought: the first 5GB are full-speed, then thereafter you're capped to 64kbps off-peak for the rest of the calendar month.
Re:Why do you use Firefox? on Monday February 06, 2017 @08:50PM (#13586258)
I'm not one to defend Chrome, but the functionality of uBlock Origin you get on Firefox is the exact same as what you get on Chrome. Same filters available and everything.

If you still see an ad in Chrome with uBlock Origin installed, it's likely that the filters haven't updated to block that particular ad yet. Moreover, you'd likely see the same ad when browsing with the equivalent Firefox.

Re:Show HN: AutoMIDIFlip – An automatic MIDI flipper on Friday February 03, 2017 @12:28AM (#13557917)
I can't seem to play any of the example MIDI files from the homepage on my Mac, using either VLC or Quicktime. Are there any special tricks I need to do in order to get these playing?
Uh, could purely be a coincidence but the favicon looks identical to the logo of UK TV corporation Sky (albeit with less colour): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sky_plc_logo.png
Re:Alfred 3 – Productivity App for Mac OS X on Thursday May 19, 2016 @09:31PM (#11735090)
It's a welcome upgrade from version 2, but I think Workflows and Snippets really could've done with a central hub for developers to upload and share their workflows/snippets, alongside a panel in Alfred to search and install them in-app (much like the 'Package Control' package manager on Sublime Text).

With the new Snippets Collections (https://www.alfredapp.com/extras/snippets/) page on their website the developers say they'll be 'adding many more snippets collections over time', but I feel like this is going to be heavily curated and infrequently updated.

The Packal (http://www.packal.org/) website does a pretty good job for Workflows currently, but I hope that expands to Snippets soon.
