Re:What I've learned about the trombone on Wednesday June 03, 2026 @09:20AM (#48383642)
You read "where the main mode of pitch control is by moving the tuning slide" as an independent statement? What does that mean on its own?
Re:Modern Board Games: and why you should play them (2022) on Thursday April 23, 2026 @10:46AM (#47876376)
The terms "board game" and "tabletop game" are considered pretty much interchangable by the vast majority of hobby board gamers, "board game" just tends to be the default. There's no requirement for a board game to have a board. BGG is full of card games, tabletop RPGs, dexterity games like jenga, junk art etc - none of which have boards

I'm at Diggerland right now, watching my 9 year old drive a 8.5T JCB on his own lol. This place is so much fun, I'm glad to have it nearby!
Re:How the U.K. Broke Its Own Economy on Tuesday March 04, 2025 @08:05AM (#43254003)
Maybe I misread it then. I interpreted it as "not low for the average person, but not that expensive _for someone with greater than average wealth_"
Re:How the U.K. Broke Its Own Economy on Tuesday March 04, 2025 @07:20AM (#43253599)
I think you misread it. The context was, _not low_ (ie. high) for the average person. For someone with a higher than average wealth however, £5k isn't all that much, especially if it could potentially protect the value of their assets

Or infuse them in the milk/cream and then strain out?
Re:Every Board Game Rulebook Is Awful [pdf] on Tuesday December 03, 2024 @04:23AM (#42304386)
For most games you _don't_ study a manual for hours. Of course there are some crazy epic games for really hardcore gamers, but rule books for mid-weight game tend to take 5-15 minutes to read through and then you're ready to play, and a lot of people enjoy that time - familiarising yourself with something new, trying to understand what makes it tick. I personally find it an enjoyable ritual. Depending on the quality of the rules / complexity of the game, the first play through might be a bit ropey, but it's usually fine, and after that you're left with something that you can get hours and hours of fun from. Board games are awesome
Re:An Introduction to CSS-Doodle on Tuesday June 18, 2024 @04:14AM (#40715281)
Another consequence of this is that there's no way to share a specific "slide", which is a shame because there's an example about 2/3s of the way down that's really cool but there's no simple way to send anyone straight to it
Re:Show HN: The Uncolouring Book on Tuesday August 22, 2023 @09:11AM (#37222210)
Ctrl+Z for undo would be super helpful here, I kept doing that out of habit and it was annoying to have to go into the corner to click the undo button
Re:Show HN: The Uncolouring Book on Tuesday August 22, 2023 @09:10AM (#37222193)
Is making that button clickable the solution here? Presumably the text is there to inform the user that they proceed by clicking on the arrow in the corner. Letting them proceed by clicking the arrow would just mean they didn't know what to do next, wouldn't it?

I did the same, tried to click it, and had to look around to find what I was actually supposed to click on. Maybe the better solution would be to make it clearer where to find the correct button?

Absolutely, just google 'css animated checkboxes' and you'll get a tonne of solutions
Re:Windows 98 Icons are Great on Monday January 16, 2023 @04:53AM (#34398809)
I guess it would depend on what you're looking to get out of your car.

I only open the door twice - once to get in, once to get out - so a small nuisance like being harder to open wouldn't bother me as it's only a fraction of the time spent engaging with the car. However I have family members with terrible arthiritis who struggle opening car doors anyway, so it'd definitely be a factor for them.

I'm also not typically in a rush when I'm driving, so if the car is a little slower that doesn't bother me as much as whether I'm comfortable and enjoying the drive. Or even if the car was no more comfortable, but just looked better, I might actually feel some pride in it and that would give me a lift and result in an improvement to my mood. If my goal was to get from A-B as fast as possible though, then it absolutely would bother me.

Re:Replace the “Very” in Your Sentence on Thursday October 13, 2022 @06:23PM (#33197245)
I find it frustrating that you have to click to refresh the result. Why it doesnt't autorefresh after a short period makes no sense to me. I kept typing in words and thinking it was getting no results before realising I had to keep hitting the refresh button
Re:Ask HN: Is there any “PBS Kids” alternatives these days? on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @04:58AM (#32834749)
I've noticed that a lot of my daughters friends put on American accents when they're playing; we're in the UK, so presumably they just watch a lot of american tv. I don't think it's particularly alarming though, I wouldn't think to warn someone to 'be careful' of letting their kids watch My Little Pony because they might imitate the accents
Took about 4 seconds for me. Still, regardless of load time I found it annoying that that was all that happened
Re:15.ai on Monday June 13, 2022 @04:46AM (#31722828)
Just search the source for one of the random texts, they're all just there in an array
Re:How to pick the least wrong colors on Tuesday June 07, 2022 @06:44AM (#31652245)
It's worse than that even. The actual color blocks are the same size, the gap is added on, so Safari gets about an 8% "boost" just from having multiple chart elements
I agree, some interesting info there but I struggled with the delivery
I think that's correct. If I were to do it for my kids I'd probably whip through and colour in the squares and circles beforehand to make it simpler for them
I think the problem is that w3schools _was_ terrible. It certainly seems to have improved, but it's reputation - amongst the older coders that I know, at least - is in the toilet

Oh brilliant thanks, I didn't understand what drifters were and their numbers were just steadily growing. Took me about 10 mins after reading your comment to get the next project unlocked and increase my max trust a few times. Fortunately the game had been streadily grinding in the background so I had more than enough creativity / yomi etc. Phew!
