Yeah, isn't a company world model just an operating model?

Re:Orbital Data Centers: Why the Hype Outpaces Reality on Thursday July 02, 2026 @02:45PM (#48765712)
You're right on that perspective. I should clarify. I mean decades+ when compute and power begins to realistically make sense where we can start planning such a long term strategy. I personally think our cislunar / moonbase efforts are a better effort to put energy and resources into.
Re:Orbital Data Centers: Why the Hype Outpaces Reality on Thursday July 02, 2026 @11:14AM (#48762897)
There's a very narrow band of sun-synchronous orbit with consistent enough sunlight to make orbital data centers viable. Even with a tight constellation of 500,000 to 1,000,000 satellites packed into that band, it still doesn't make economic sense compared to what terrestrial data centers can do. At 500,000 satellites you're looking at maybe 50 GW of solar power. Then factor in the lifespan of LEO at ~5 years you're looking at hundreds of satellite launches daily to maintain that infrastructure.

Now work is being done for increasing solar access (Starcatcher) and others are working on improving LEO refueling and repair capabilities, but I would say we're decade+ away from establishing any true compute infrastructure in orbit.

Almost feels like astroturfing territory
For what it's worth I actually like the Vatican's take on AI. I hope they keep this perspective and don't allow OpenAI/Anthropic to influence. I think you're right this is more of a publicity stunt on the tech side.

Their Defeating Nondeterminism in LLM Inference was interesting for me. Worth reading their others!
I immediately thought this was an update by Deepset and their Haystack framework. https://haystack.deepset.ai/

Just FYI.

Re:Show HN: I Made the Hardest Focus App on Saturday August 23, 2025 @12:12PM (#44996953)
I've always been curious about creating a collective pool of money - from subscriptions for something like this. The user only pays if they break their focus. Could even redistribute the pot to those who last at the end of the month/week / whatever.
One of our clients is a procurement marketplace. One of the current struggles we face is getting vendors to upload catalog details for each product, which our marketplace needs to populate for a better shopping experience. Would your API assist us with filling in those gaps on products? (think common office products, industrial equipment etc). The caveat is that we can only show products from specific compliant vendors.

Re:Benzene at 200 on Monday June 16, 2025 @01:27PM (#44291535)
Interesting article. I have always viewed Benzene as a bogeyman of sorts. My parents both interacted with it often throughout my life. My dad was a chemical engineer for an oil company, and he often spoke of spills and incidents. As a kid, I never understood what it was, but the tone and urgency were always something scary.

I also strongly suspect my mother's Benzene exposures (nurse cleaning lab slides with Benzene and no PPE) led to me battling Langerhans Histiocytosis throughout my childhood.

Re:The Child-Like Role of Dogs in Western Societies on Tuesday June 10, 2025 @11:18AM (#44237922)
Regardless of dog ownership, it sounds a bit ego-centric to think that life is solely about leaving a legacy and assuming your kids are there solely to care for their parents in old age.

Tetris Effect is also a great example of this. Each movement and rotation of pieces impacts the score and each level has varied genres. One of my favorites is the New York City Jazz level.

I agree, I was primarily attracted to the modularity and magnetic features. Luckily, only $150 of 2019 money.
Re:Here's why you should only buy a magnetic keyboard for gaming on Thursday November 21, 2024 @10:34AM (#42205328)
I bought a magnetic keyboard recommended on HN back in 2019. I was underwhelmed by it. Mostly because it was the Keystone and is still listed as "under production" on Kickstarter. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lekashman/keystone-the-... . I still hold out on hope that one day, it will magically arrive.
I think there is a difference from people upset around over hyped LLMs and arguing about intelligence in "A.I.". Most of the "intelligence" arguments I've seen are fighting against putting too much stock in chatgpt and Sam's fever dreams.
Re:Markov chains are funnier than LLMs on Monday August 19, 2024 @05:00PM (#41294549)
I think this is the next sequel to the movie "Her".

You bring up a good point though. Very dystopian idea of a new type of enterprise tooling that emerges to soothe and calibrate human knowledge workers. Very Severance Wellness room.

LLMs are really disrupting the market for Mckinsey junior analysts meeting with clients.

I fear you're right. As a remote worker, I feel that more touchpoints and areas of collaboration can really nurture a better culture. Muddy feels like a good step in that direction. While my day-to-day experience with Office365 isn't horrible, it's this kind of innovation that I want to support.
