Well, they did just spend an enormous amount on building a new tower on Park Ave.

The meals are pricey, no doubt, but the app is where the real value is.

In NYC, I’ve scored insanely cheap deals—last week I got 10 chicken nuggets for $1. Right now, I’ve got a 50¢ double cheeseburger offer staring me down. I’d redeem it daily if it weren’t for health reasons (it says once a week, but for me, it’s somehow available every day).

And don’t sleep on the $6 meal deal: a McDouble, 4-piece chicken nuggets, small fries, and a small drink. For six bucks, that’s tough to beat!

Not sure I agree with her comments here but she's usually a sane voice among a bunch of uber-progressive anarcho-tyrannists in the city council (anti-defund police, calls out the "congestion tax" farce, anti-rent control, anti-squatter etc.).

In theory it sounds great, but try interviewing with companies and see their reaction when you tell them you can't start for > 6 months.

Sure, like Fukushima, which is rare, and had a single death?

Nice, now I can visualize how much more I'm paying after the shutdown of Indian Point nuclear plant in favor of expensive fossil fuels.
Re:Senior devs. Is anyone else insulted by coding exams? on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @11:34AM (#30616468)
Just curious, has anyone ever had a candidate actually fail FizzBuzz in front of them? I think the original statement was something like 90% of candidates can't do it. In my experience, every single candidate I have ever given that question succeeds. When I am asked FizzBuzz on an interview, I am actually insulted.

I always thought a significant benefit of being a teacher is receiving a pension, summers off, government benefits, not necessarily pay. https://www.aei.org/articles/no-teachers-are-not-underpaid/
Re:The case against masks at school on Thursday January 27, 2022 @01:56PM (#30104577)
If the childhood mortality risk associated with Covid is comparable to the flu (which seems to be the case) why weren't we masking every child before Covid?
Re:Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @11:20AM (#30087416)
> Their choice to not be vaccinated or wear masks results in people we love dying.

It's hard to see how vaccines stop the spread when places like NYC or Israel (some of the most vaccinated places in the world) had record setting numbers in the recent wave.

If vaccines work, shouldn't the "people you love" be vaccinated and thus not impacted by unvaccinated people?

I understand masks can be effective in some cases, but is it really reasonable to demand people wear surgical or N95 masks all the time to prevent "people you love" from getting an illness with a 99.99% survival rate?

Re:Google Is Forcing Me to Dump a Perfectly Good Phone on Tuesday January 25, 2022 @12:59PM (#30075328)
My 5X died in my pocket before a year of usage. Just died and wouldn't turn on. I called support and they said to ship it out, and I would have a new one in about a week. Never mind 1) phones shouldn't just randomly die, and 2) a week without a phone??? Switched to iPhone and never looked back.

Crude analysis of gender pay gap. What is the difference in experience level, hours worked, industry, etc.? Pay gap "headed in the wrong direction" could easily be more women entering the field at a junior level, which would actually be heading in the right direction.
I have lived in NYC for 10+ years and I can't say I've had a single encounter with the police.
Actually, a recent study showed there is a "U" shaped curve where the least educated and the most highly educated are the most vaccine hesitant. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.07.20.21260795v...

Actually, I think if anything, when you make "Google" money, the stakes become a lot higher. Taxes are easy enough to ignore when the base amount is low.

"Florida did a very poor job with Covid" - care to elaborate?

Death rate per capita:

Florida: 110 Population: 21.5 million

New York: 206 Population: 19.4 million

This quote stood out for me as well, for the reason that my own depiction of a "good coder" has evolved into someone who codes a solution in the simplest way possible using the best tools, not the "hardest" or most "lit" way.
I once used Google Maps on a Greek island and it told us a path that led to a dead end on a narrowing gravel road.
The top 1% of earners pay 40% of New York City's income tax. The real question is how will NYC cope with the decreased tax base.
Re:Don’t pay for 95% (2016) on Monday October 12, 2020 @03:42PM (#24758597)
I live in NYC and renting a car, either with a car rental agency or via ZipCar is an utter shitshow.

With ZipCar, the cars are usually either (1) changed last minute to a different garage, (2) have mechanical issues (I showed up once and the battery was dead), or (3) strong smell of smoking. A few times I have had multiple of them occur in the same reservation (the third garage we were sent to had a functioning car with check engine alerts).

I have tried rental cars, but then what if you want to go away for a week at a time? What if the car doesn't have an EZ-Pass? How do you get to your final destination from the car rental place? A few months ago I waited one hour for a Lyft driver to pick me up (in a jalopy van on a toll-less route with no AC) to take me to the car rental place.

There is something to be said of having a functioning car waiting for you near your place of residence, even if it is only for 5% of the time. I imagine the same applies to other things in life.

Re:Google Services Experiencing Disruptions on Thursday September 24, 2020 @09:17PM (#24585583)
YouTube TV not working on my phone.
I recently requested a Lyft “wait and save” and had to suffer through 3 cancellations (I was going to the airport). I think there are definitely cracks in the “independent contractor” model if Lyft can quote me a definite timeline (15 min wait), have 3 drivers cancel on me because the fare was too low.
Just because their argument appeals to emotion doesn't make the argument for school closure any more valid. There will always be a risk of death in life... what if a child gets the flu? These are remote risks that we accept may happen, we accept them and move on with our lives.

166 children died from the flu in 2019-2020 season, so far there have been 86 child covid deaths. https://www.aappublications.org/news/2020/04/10/fluupdate041... https://downloads.aap.org/AAP/PDF/AAP%20and%20CHA%20-%20Chil...

At what point does it become "safe" enough to open the schools? What about the flu? Auto accidents? Bus accidents? Has this been articulated?

"Children were 0%-0.8% of all COVID-19 deaths, and 20 states reported zero child deaths" https://services.aap.org/en/pages/2019-novel-coronavirus-cov...

Perhaps you can contextualize the situation you are in. Were you detained rioting next to a federal courthouse? Maybe then you can assume it's a federal agent. Were you walking down the street in a suburb? Maybe not.
