Re:Why the AI future will be awesome on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:03AM (#50016189)
This is perhaps the most ill informed and misguided thing I’ve read on the internet this year. Within the span of a few sentences the author states that humanity ending bioweapons are no big deal and that LLMs are perfectly suited to solving nuclear fusion? Atrocious
Re:Don't Let Anyone Take Away Your Big Box of Cables on Thursday September 10, 2026 @12:07PM (#49646098)
do yourself a favour and buy some zip mesh bag on amazon (often used for children's toy sorting; they're much more robust than zip-locks) and use them to group your cables. the big box(es) goes from a source of stress to an absolute delight.

Having worked with Nik in the past, yes he is a great person and one of the best. Any company missing out on him is genuinely foolish

I also had someone do this while their Tesla was in self driving mode. When I insisted he turn it off, he said “it’s not about you bro”.

Now try doing that while the car is on fire with burning children inside

It has essentially always been possible to split the iPad keyboard or have it be iPhone sized and floating. Both are a good experience
She is not the author
Excellent recommendation. Watching the videos of his 2yo’s progress is wonderful. I will be trying this, thank you.
using a mechanical keyboard on a plane is truly unhinged
I’ll take any opportunity I can to recommend this podcast, and this episode specifically. If this article resonates with you then it is absolutely worth the listen.

“As an extended allegory for society and technology it absolutely sucks and is also ludicrously wrong-headed”

> As for any inner meaning or ‘message’, it has in the intention of the author none. It is neither allegorical nor topical

Tolkien himself in the foreword to fellowship

This person needs to cool it with the pseudo intellectualism and let people enjoy things

Maybe put even a few minutes of cursory research into any of those claims

Joking aside, Diggnation has returned and Kevin Rose has said a few times he wants to buy back Digg.com

NSHipster played such a pivotal role in me becoming the engineer I am today. It’s heartwarming and hugely nostalgic to see a mattt post
in my experience its more like: 0-5% - Sunny; 5-60% - Partly Cloudy; 60-100% - Cloudy;

I've not seen other descriptors, and to view it changing over time its just on the timeline as a sun, sun+cloud & cloud emoji's

It's not useful other than as a binary 'is it cloudy' which in Bay Area weather it is a meaningful difference between 30% and 60% coverage

% cloud cover by hour
This guys PR team has been obviously working overtime in the last few months to make him the new musk. I’m taking note of all the organizations being paid to exhaustingly fawn over the cool new kid of death technology
They make and deploy their own weather monitoring buoys for weather prediction
Ocean carriers already optimize and it’s odd to have the article suggest they don’t. The company Sofar Ocean (https://www.sofarocean.com/products/wayfinder) does it in a particularly interesting way and actually has people using it, rather than a theoretical analysis of a small number of voyages
Re:What's New in Neovim 0.10 on Thursday May 16, 2024 @11:55AM (#40379852)
This isn’t neovim specific but this was one of the more delightful and impactful discoveries https://shapeshed.com/vim-netrw/

Configuring netrw right and having my vimrc load a side pane with it on load, combined with configuring my tab key to cycle between windows... Perfect.

I immediately found two books I'd not come across before, that I am going to start today. This is a great site, thank you

This is one of the better landing pages for a product I’ve seen, it’s so succinct. Nicely done. I’m going to actually evaluate your product today as a result
I actually gasped. Wow
Re:The Case of Nuclear Cargo Ships on Sunday January 21, 2024 @01:01PM (#39080837)
It is still used exactly as much as it was before, and sadly won’t change as a result of IMO for quite some time.
for this to be true and also for it to be legal to have all your windows tinted is sad and absurd.

I assume it’s legal as in east bay I see fully blacked out windows and windscreens every day

This is really interesting, thank you.

What would be the downside to padding all inputs to have consistent input token size?

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024) on Tuesday January 02, 2024 @02:52PM (#38846232)
Shippabo (https://www.shippabo.com) | REMOTE (US & Canada) | Full-time

We're a small team working on digitizing international freight logistics. I'm looking to hire an ML engineer to inherit the data engineering and ML side of our operations. We have models running in production right now for various tasks including some really interesting prediction models that we use to help our customers plan their logistics timelines.

I'm looking to hire a senior ML/full stack engineer. Please email Joe [at] shippabo.com if you're interested with a resume/linkedin/link to a project you've built
