They have a lot of cash on hand: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=TWTR

It's likely money left over from the IPO & previous fund raising events.

Re:Obama Forgives Student Debt Of 400,000 Americans on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @12:46PM (#11489853)
It'd be one thing if student loans were true unsecured debt but they're not. The government backs most student loans (even private ones) and they are not dismissible through bankruptcy. So, in some ways they're more "secure" than a car/house/etc.

https://enlightenme.com/secured-and-unsecured-debt/ (there is a mountain of other resources on student loan debt and how it differs)

Re:Payments company WePay (YC S09) raises $40M to go global on Wednesday May 20, 2015 @01:21PM (#9577753)
This is awesome news for marketplaces who see the value in processing payments. Marketplace payments are a tough egg to crack and after meeting their CEO, Bill, and learning more of future plans, I think they're headed in the right direction.
Re:Apple: The organizational Rorschach on Thursday June 13, 2013 @12:28PM (#5874916)
To build on gtcameron:

The call comparison is bad -- the first one is when the phone is "unlocked" and the "new" one is when the phone is in a locked state. Also, the previous version would show a picture if you had a picture associated to the contact.

And, if anything, with weather, and in general iOS was the first mobile OS which allowed you to horizontally scroll through screens -- I feel that that is the bigger "design" element stolen than a particular font/color choice.

Let's not forget about the pinch to zoom, etc.

Lesson here? Everyone borrows from each other. But I don't think the examples here are that damning. I think iOS borrowed much more from android than WP7/8. (Look at the modal dialogs -- other than rounded corners, they're nearly identical to Android's)

AND Chris Miller got his dates wrong -- the multitasking in windows phone and iOS was stolen from WebOS -- which came out in 2009. Not 2011.

Re:Designers Complaining about iOS7 on Tuesday June 11, 2013 @01:46PM (#5863429)
It looks the same on iOS 7 because Apple hasn't updated any of their non-preloaded apps yet. (iTunes Connect, Apple Store, iTunes U, Podcasts, iBooks are all other examples which have not been updated)

Given that FMF made it into the keynote both when it was introduced, and yesterday, I'd say it's important to them. (Not just text on a slide)

Edit: Whoops, I was thinking about Find My iPhone from the keynote yesterday, my bad. It was introduced in a keynote before.

Re:Designers Complaining about iOS7 on Tuesday June 11, 2013 @01:35PM (#5863355)
The Settings app, Safari app and Compass app icon's are all pretty bad. (too much detail compared to the rest)

I do agree with the general sentiment that the icons, in general, do not fit with the rest of the design decisions.

Re:Designers Complaining about iOS7 on Tuesday June 11, 2013 @01:30PM (#5863315)
Stitched leather did make it onto iOS 6, by way of Find My Friends.

I'm not overly for flat design or overly against skeuomorphism, but Find My Friends was horrendous.

Re:The secret button at pedestrian crossings on Thursday May 30, 2013 @03:18PM (#5794605)
At my university, they'd make the chirping noise, but it'd also state which road has the walk sign. So it'd repeatedly say "Farm Lane Walk Sign" while the sign was on.
Re:Giving Up Paying Off $186,000 Student Loan Debt on Wednesday May 29, 2013 @04:52PM (#5788996)
That jump is for new loans, fortunately. All previous federal loans are locked in at the rate they were originally signed for.
While Atlanta is in the south, Atlanta proper is much like any other big city. There is an unbelievable amount of great food and every restaurant has vegetarian options (my wife is one), etc.

I will admit that I hate the weather. I'd take 50's-70's any day over the 6 months of 90+ degree weather with 50%+ humidity we have here in Atlanta.

Re:Introducing Android Studio on Wednesday May 15, 2013 @02:15PM (#5713740)
Doubtful, given it is not web-based.

edit: There is nothing definitively saying it is not web-based, but I do feel as if that would be a big talking point when they first introduced it if it were.

When you copy from outlook, it copies that unless you first double click on the contact then select just the email address.
Re:Facebook buys Parse on Thursday April 25, 2013 @05:37PM (#5610069)
"full mobile back-end" is pushing it. Don't get me wrong, I love what Parse has brought to the market, but the capability of it is limited at the moment.

One of the biggest limitations is the length for which cloud code methods can run. (Nothing longer than a second, IIRC)

You can build a social sharing app, or share some data between apps, but building a "product" on it is limited to very simple cases.

Re:Heroku 2X Dynos in Public Beta on Friday April 05, 2013 @05:11PM (#5501049)
You can also consider moving elsewhere -- I'm paying $9.50/month to webfaction to host my app. While it took about a half hour to set everything up, (In my case rails, postgres, etc) I use Capistrano to deploy just as easily/quickly as Heroku.

Certainly cheaper than paying for 2 dynos.

Re:Roger Ebert dies at 70 after battle with cancer on Thursday April 04, 2013 @05:02PM (#5495298)
Seriously -- My mother died when I was 2, 24 years ago. The type of cancer she had took her quickly -- however, today, the available treatments would have likely given her a relatively normal life.

Back then there was nothing. No one knew really what to do with her particular type. It was all a gamble with a lot of "Go to Mexico to try some experimental treatments"

Is requiring a top university really a new thing at Yahoo?

I remember 5-6 years ago when I was applying for internships I couldn't even finish my application as it required you to pick from a list of universities (no option of "Other") which also happened to be the top 20.

Perhaps they stopped this for a time?

Re:My Interview Questions for Potential Employers on Tuesday March 26, 2013 @11:54AM (#5444100)
I agree -- I've turned down a job before I received a formal offer (was told one was in the works) partly because no one could tell me what the vacation policy was. Not that I'm only interested in time off work, but I do live a few states away from the rest of my family (and many friends) and I'd like to visit them once in a while and not feel guilty.
Re:Ask HN: Have you ever been sued by your startup? on Monday March 25, 2013 @01:57PM (#5438511)
Have you looked into whether or not your school provides free legal services?

My university's student government paid for two pretty awesome lawyers (through a student tax) which could be used for pretty much any legal matter (from starting up a business to criminal charges) for free. At the very least they can probably refer you to someone who can help you.

Re:Spotify vs Rdio on Monday February 25, 2013 @04:36PM (#5281991)
Rdio does #1, and has the ability for #2, although I'm not sure if there are many apps consuming Rdio's API.
Re:Spotify vs Rdio on Monday February 25, 2013 @04:36PM (#5281987)
User interface is huge for me, especially from a mobile app standpoint. In my opinion, Spotify's mobile app is pretty terrible when compared to Rdio's.

Also, I love the "Collection" feature of Rdio which puts the music I like right at my finger tips rather than creating playlists for every artist with Spotify.

Radio is also available with Rdio for an artist, collection, etc.

Re:Using SimCity to diagnose my home town's traffic problem on Tuesday February 19, 2013 @01:09PM (#5245909)
The beta testing is all done. The game comes out in two weeks.
Re:Using SimCity to diagnose my home town's traffic problem on Tuesday February 19, 2013 @01:06PM (#5245886)
Me too. I had the chance to play the beta last weekend and even with reduced functionality the game was quite a lot of fun.

I rarely if ever play games and I'm certain this will be a terrible time suck.

Re:Once again, Path steals your data without permission on Thursday January 31, 2013 @09:20PM (#5148811)
I agree -- I think this is more Apple's problem than anything.

If I disable location data for an app, Apple shouldn't allow any form of my location to be passed to that app.

Re:Improved User Profiles on Friday December 21, 2012 @10:35AM (#4953040)
This. I switched from github to bitbucket in all of about 10 minutes a weekend ago for my private repos. $7/month more in my pocket.

I did find it interesting that when I canceled with Github they killed my "paid account" status right away, rather than let me have the rest of the month.

Re:Replying to User Reviews on Google Play on Thursday June 21, 2012 @02:22PM (#4143443)
This is awesome. Google Play is a very frustrating marketplace from a review standpoint. Itunes is a little bit less frustrating, but frustrating nonetheless.
If I'm still worth more than a billion, no I would not give up my citizenship. When you're worth more than a billion dollars, as Bill Gates has said, money is of no worry any more. You would have to be an idiot to lose it all.
Re:How text editing on the iPad should be on Friday May 04, 2012 @10:18AM (#3928439)
That's only because those devices didn't have an onscreen keyboard...
Re:Yahoo CEO might have lied about having CS degree on Thursday May 03, 2012 @05:11PM (#3925832)
I have a double degree, B.S. Economics and B.S. Computer Science, however, my school did not mind me double counting classes, I just had to meet all of the requirements of both majors and accumulate 150 credits. Whereas a single degree would be just 120 credits. I could have received a double major, which is 120 credits (or more) and fulfilling all of the requirements of both majors. Since the CS program required 120 credits (with no wiggle room for classes that didn't fit the curriculum) adding on economics put me above 150 credits just to fullfil all of the requirements.
This has nothing to do with the actual content of the article, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen advertisements placed so terribly before.

Most decent blogs at a minimum make some divide between content & advertisements but this one has it in the middle of a quote & a huge one before the actual content even starts.

Re:Glassmap (YC S11) Launches A Better “Find My Friends” on Thursday February 16, 2012 @01:12PM (#3599912)
I think I agree with you for the most part.

I do use Find My Friends for two reasons, one is to share my location with my very, very close friends (4 people) as I really don't care if they know.

Second, my wife is a teacher at an inner city school here in Atlanta. The school is located in a pretty bad area, and I like to know she made it to/from school safely.

Beyond that, I don't use it for anything else. I do find apps like foursquare/path much more interesting from the sharing a location standpoint.
