tbf if you have very few runes on you in Elden Ring then dying has very little consequence. Only your progress is reverted a little.
once the wind dies down and the humidity rises, a fire becomes much less dangerous. The problem with these recent fires is when you have like sustained 50 mph gusts and 5% humidity. When I first moved here in 89, I never heard of a fire crossing a freeway (though no doubt it happened sometimes) because the conditions weren't typically so bad. Now it is commonplace.
seems fishy af. he tries to block the hole of a yellowjack nest by driving a stake in (??), and a fire starts (?????). uhhh
Re:20 Years Ago, Microsoft introduced its optical mouse on Tuesday May 07, 2019 @01:48PM (#19851733)
I think my first experience with an optical mouse was on a Data General unix workstation around 1990 or so. It needed a special pad; the pad was metal and had a grid pattern on it. The mouse was somewhat less responsive than ball mice at the time.

Re:What No One Tells You About Noise Cancelling Headphones on Saturday April 27, 2019 @05:49PM (#19767835)
I've used noise cancelling headphones for thousands of hours by now, luckily no issues. My latest pair is Sony 1000xm3. I love them so much, it would be a huge bummer if I was afffected by the pain issue and had to give them up.
Re:The Japanese Iced Coffee Method (2012) on Friday June 24, 2016 @05:32PM (#11973660)
It's how I usually drink my cold brew. Just mix with hot water.

Re:Master Emacs in one year on Thursday July 24, 2014 @05:43PM (#8082441)
I don't really understand this reaction. It just seems a little immature to me. It's like "I'll show them!! I'm NOT going to try lisp. haha"

Whether or not lisp is worthwhile to learn has nothing to do with how some people advocate for it, right?

Re:Fractal Machine on Wednesday August 07, 2013 @01:41PM (#6174308)
Depends on the fractal. I occasionally make HD animations (using Ultra Fractal), and those run about 1 hour PER FRAME. A short clip takes several months, just to render. (search for jockc on youtube if interested)
Got my 3ds about 2 months ago and I absolutely love the 3d aspect. To my eyes the 3d view is beautiful to view/play and is oddly nostalgic (it reminds me of a Viewmaster).
Re:The End: NZBMatrix closes on Monday December 10, 2012 @08:09PM (#4902572)
I know that comp.lang.lisp is still active.. I assume there are plenty of other groups still active as well.
How did all you people find jobs that allow you to work from home? I would love to try it, I just don't see many programmer jobs that allow this.
Re:Learn Emacs: Keyboard Macros on Thursday November 10, 2011 @02:38PM (#3221491)
I find that copy rectangle works wonders for lots of problems like this. It's simple to type

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

8

9

0

and then using copy rectangle I can quickly assemble long lists of numbers.

I do use keyboard macros quite frequently too, but mostly for more complex operations (e.g. start of line, search for char, set point, search for next char, kill-ring-save, move to end, set point, yank, uppercase region)

Re:Vi and Vim vs. Emacs Shootout and Deal on Monday November 07, 2011 @11:14AM (#3206802)
Well that's interesting; I started using emacs around 1986 or so, and the first thing I did was go thru the tutorial; I don't remember it being overly basic at all.
Re:The Best Science Fiction Books (According to Reddit) on Friday September 09, 2011 @01:02PM (#2978855)
My favorites are The Invincible and Fiasco
Re:The Best Science Fiction Books (According to Reddit) on Friday September 09, 2011 @12:33PM (#2978724)
I don't remember enjoying Permutation City that much, but it for sure as hell has stuck in my mind for years (to this day, in fact) for the ideas it brings forth. I think I'm going to reread it.
Re:California to Shut 70 State Parks on Friday May 13, 2011 @06:47PM (#2546507)
seems rather stupid to me..
I'm guessing ROT13
Re:Write your passwords down on Friday December 17, 2010 @01:30PM (#2017142)
Yes, but what if he used "thIs 1s n0t my p4ssw0rd". Wouldn't that cause the cracking program to burst into flames?
Not much different. He generates sales for Rapidscan, in return they buy consulting service from his company.

Re:$250,000-a-day Minecraft strikes indie game gold on Thursday September 23, 2010 @01:45AM (#1718715)
Yes a simple base is 100% safe, however if you spend 90% of your time exploring/mining caves (I do), you will find plenty of danger. That's really the point of the game--not building a base that's going to be attacked by mobs.
Re:What is the Speed of Gravity? on Tuesday September 07, 2010 @01:09PM (#1669410)
I hate that curved space graphic. Now you have some mysterious gravity pulling both the sun and earth down. I wish someone would come up with a better example to show gravity as curved space.
Re:Practicality: PHP vs Lisp on Saturday July 03, 2010 @02:06AM (#1483381)
Verbose how?
I watched a program about this girl and I remember thinking this the whole time. She stopped development in most ways, but that doesn't mean she isn't aging.
Re:The Nature of Lisp (2006) on Wednesday May 05, 2010 @01:14AM (#1320390)
I started using emacs as a C programmer; even for C, emacs was a great environment, especially back in 1989; good integration with the compiler and cvs, auto indent, syntax highlighting, etc..
Re:Pull the plug. Your battery will thank you on Friday February 26, 2010 @10:49AM (#1153324)
Seems like it would be easy for laptop makers to design something into the laptop to manage how the battery charges/discharges when it's plugged in. That way you could leave it plugged in 99% of the time (as probably many of us do) and not impact the battery negatively.
Re:Avatar: The Holocaust We Will Not See on Wednesday January 13, 2010 @01:25PM (#1050721)
I was thinking this too as the credits were rolling.
