Re:Marc Andreessen Is a Maniac on Monday April 29, 2024 @02:10PM (#40201879)
What are some other examples of topics that, well gorsh-darn, the algorithm just had to push 'em down so we can all get along?

HN is an echo chamber.

Re:Marc Andreessen Is a Maniac on Monday April 29, 2024 @01:04PM (#40201052)
If the institution by the people and for the people has flaws, then we the people should work together to improve it.

We would rather not throw all of our hopes and dreams at the feet of greedy capitalists who would sell their own grandma's walker for a powerball ticket.

Re:Marc Andreessen Is a Maniac on Monday April 29, 2024 @12:50PM (#40200845)
A gizmodo commenter made a good suggestion: replace "maniac" with "psychopath."

I endorse this because mania is a medically recognized condition that can be managed successfully with treatment.

Do we have evidence that MA is bipolar or otherwise verifiably maniacal? Or is he just another unscrupulous capitalist? I think it's the latter.

MA: If you're reading this, just know that whatever trendy "ism" is making its rounds at the yacht club will not justify the awful, inhumane business decision you are about to make.

Yeah, and that made me wonder whether survivorship bias could be at play. That is, populations at lower elevations see less opportunities for suicide due to individuals dying of things like heart disease, etc., before they have a chance to off themselves at a later age.

But they do mention that they "[controlled] for percent of age >50 yr." Does that imply that, per county, they excluded high-elevation suicides that wouldn't have happened at lower elevations, using known mortality rates for common causes-of-death for age > 50 individuals?

I'm sure the answer is in the paper somewhere, but I need to get back to work. :-)

Re:Physicists discover that gravity can create light on Friday April 21, 2023 @02:36PM (#35658072)
I used to share your confusion on this topic, but I think I got it:

General Relativity posits that gravity embodies both of those qualities you mentioned.

It is a force that bends space and dilates time.

Re:Physicists discover that gravity can create light on Friday April 21, 2023 @02:27PM (#35657960)
The authors added "electromagnetic field", which also happens to involve particles.
I only have that when I'm reading something and really trying to take it all in.

Otherwise my internal monologue is a combination of notions, visions, and words.

Do you think in complete sentences?

I would support an all-hands-on-deck response to the blinding headlight problem. Incident declared!
They criticized Google for holding a value they perceived to be at odds with the underlying economic system.

During a discussion of said company's defiance of a federal judge, such a critique seems pertinent to me!

We have continually observed the most powerful actors in our system abusing it in consistent ways: cornering markets, becoming monopolies, bullying smaller companies, constructing walled gardens, diminishing the concept of consumer ownership, etc.

I think we ought to allow comments like theirs in discussions like this.

It may have been worth it for the author to mention that Apple is sitting on the biggest pile of cash in the known universe.
He is absolutely, singlehandedly destroying Twitter-- no sarcasm.
Re:The dictatorship of the articulate on Thursday September 01, 2022 @10:03AM (#32676347)
Incoherent article rife with generalizations and appeals to non-experts.

0/10.

TIL that only two minivans (the Sienna and the Pacifica) offer AWD. That surprised me!

And incidentally (getting back to the original point of the article), both models feature a pretty flat front-end for a minivan. I wouldn't be surprised if they are considered among the least pedestrian-safe vehicles of the class.

Re:Cumulative loneliness and subsequent memory function on Thursday August 04, 2022 @07:04PM (#32349424)
Are you referring to the Cassava Sciences fraud? All of that was related to a specific treatment that a specific researcher was trying to push through FDA trials.

I would consider that an isolated incident, similar to the "vaccines cause autism" researcher who was discredited long ago (and hopefully the Cassava guy will be, too).

Re: on Friday June 10, 2022 @06:25PM (#31700058)
Mmm, I await the article.

You fixed nothing.

Would you mind clarifying your argument? How would you define "breakthrough innovation"? I think that's critical to my understanding of your point.
How do you maximize opportunities for collaboration?
Re:PBS SpaceTime on Friday May 20, 2022 @09:58AM (#31447464)
I had never even heard of this, and I've watched dozens and dozens of episodes of Spacetime!

I'm shocked YouTube didn't steer me to this sister channel. Thank you!

To obscure the facts of the story that when gathered make it less impactful / impressive.

It's clear that the "no idea how to fly" guy actually had plenty idea, when you listen to the full audio.

> The plane practically flies itself.

Personally, I would perhaps allow this turn of phrase in reference to take-off and cruising, depending on equipment and assuming VFR, but I'm not sure I would ever say this about LANDING any plane.

Re:Why we should end the data economy on Friday June 04, 2021 @02:26PM (#27397125)
The so-called "data economy" has improved our lives in immeasurable ways. I can more easily discover products that are relevant to me. Deserving innovations are granted a platform for quicker adoption. The world at large is more efficient, because relevant products and services are being delivered more quickly and efficiently than ever before.

The author is extremely paranoid. She uses the word "should" a whole lot, but does not back up her dictatorial statements with any reasoning.

This article has failed to scare me as intended.

Sorry I wasn't more helpful. See Jacob's reply. Keep doing what you are doing! No discouragement was intended.
Hello xpe, I'm rather glad that it does.

I'm continually triggered by this horrible pattern that frustrates me and wastes my time.

In turn, I think it is arrogant of UI designers to assume that everybody will automatically understand what their icons mean, and that it's worth my time to repeatedly hover over them to get to things they should want me to find.

Twitter is crawling with scammers and pump-n-dumpers. It's impossible to use it for investment talk. You spend all your time blocking people, and ticker hashtags are abused by people selling their discord channel or other crap. Also, if you express negative emotion toward a stock, its investors go out of their way to dox you or harass you. I had to set my account to "protected" because of this.

Twitter missed out on a huge opportunity. They should have listened to investors who user their platform.

Please stop with the icon menu bars. It is 2021, and people are still doing this. Why. Just stop. Arrrgh.

Anyway, I absolutely love this idea! I signed up and am poking around now. I think I already like this more than Benzinga, Stocktwits, SeekingAlpha, you-name-it.

Re:Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up on Tuesday March 30, 2021 @03:50PM (#26639503)
Done.

Sorry I fulminated, fellow hackers. I will do better.

Re:Female Founder Secrets: Men Clamming Up on Sunday March 28, 2021 @06:25PM (#26615295)
Looks like I'm being downvoted into oblivion by insecure male investors.

Perhaps they are bitter about lacking the gumption to handle such situations professionally and ethically? Perhaps they avoid any and all critical conversations with the people they work with? Enjoy watching all of your ventures fail!

Or maybe it's: conducting themselves like professionals while concealing their sexism just breaks their poor rich brains.

Re:From Vim to Emacs in fourteen days (2015) on Thursday March 11, 2021 @10:46PM (#26432003)
Here's the thing, though. I don't use Vim as an IDE. I use it on live servers to change configs / scripts / app code (don't tell anyone) quickly and efficiently. I don't think "extra doodads" would help with that, and I'm not sure I'd want to manage those dependencies on my platform anyway.

If I'm actually developing something that's part of a greater whole, then I'm using a fully fledged IDE like PyCharm (but with the VIM emulator plugged in for when I need it, of course ;-D).

Likewise, no shade at Emacs, though. Several of my favorite colleagues use it!

Nah, if it's a historically or culturally significant issue, I'm definitely linking to it so people can read about it. Just add a warning not to post meaningless garbage in the ticket's thread, if you're that concerned about it.
