I work on Mac's every day. The device I use most is my AppleTV - music streaming, background noise, etc. It's a passive thing but the first device the last couple of times I've moved.

I've gone LG OLED 65" - C5 I think. I have never connected it to the internet. It's annoying to get prompts about needing to update - they seemed to have stopped.
An AppleTV has been my first purchase or installation for nearly the last decade with a flat screen tv.

I pay about $0.14/kwh and don't need it all the time. API calls might be cheaper. I develop in a way where I break things out where well defined tasks can be handed to a local model.
Re:OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target
on Saturday October 31, 2026 @02:20AM (#50313687)
I have subscriptions for necessary work and even pay for api calls.
The machine with the 3090 I built years ago and suddenly it’s worth 4x plus what I paid. It is for testing, but I use the model I run on it and the model I run on an mbp M1 Max with 64gig as workers for specifically scoped work.
I’d love to have a few dgx sparcs or the like to do heavy local stuff, but that money is best paying the pimps for now.

The work going on to improve things on single card like a 3090 is nuts. HyperQwen, other things. I have my subscriptions, but always good to explore options.

I occasionally spin up VMs with this and OS2. I miss the era of operating system options. But but linux. It has it's place, I run FreeBSD, but for desktop, options dimish. I like apple hardware, I like apple hardware trackpad support. Running Linux on a MacBook is not something I would ever do. I used FreeBSD on stinkpads for years.

And they turn it on by default. If Steve Jobs were around, it would have either worked better or it would have been sold better and those in charge kicked in the nuts. Apple's UX team SUCKS these days.

It not only removed the F-keys, but it was not as responsive as a keyboard and a misplaced finger did something you may not want. Personally I HATED the thing.

I think this can easily be seen in the introduction of windows into iPad OS. I hate when the wrong motion creates a window from what I was working with. And this is on the 11" pro.

My M1 Max MBP has 64 gig, still runs well. I understand memory has skyrocketed in price, but Apple has been hamstringing the max ram in their MBPs it seems for awhile.
Re:Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:08PM (#50253484)
I think it's a role that makes sense. Solution architects and pre-sales engineers are a role that has been sorta defined in the past. Working directly with customers gives much more market insight than PMs that don't actually ever talk to a customer.
Re:Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
on Monday October 26, 2026 @07:32PM (#50252680)
Actually, I think there are areas of interest that come up in large companies. Microsoft started the equivalent of an FDE organization about 12 years ago. It was interesting to have the freedom to build and grow an organization from about 20 to 800 people. Working with customers and product teams to help get direct customer feedback to help evolve products was interesting. Now, 12 years later, FDEs are sort of the current buzzy role.

Things have improved to a point, but there are still certain stereotypes by country/region that stand - general outsourcing firms are amongst the worst; targeted specialists can be great (I've worked with such in multiple geos).
My comment was somewhat flip, but I wasn't surprised when I saw what and where.

I hadn't heard of this Intermidate CA provider. I guess I've been a bit lax on keeping myself updated in the PKI space. That said, given the country it is based, it doesn't surprise me about the general lack of quality and seriousness about what they did and how it's been exposed.
I may get downvotes, but this just screams amateur hour.

I will disagree - the coop was actually cheaper than the town near by that was PG&E direct. Also the stability was significantly better than PG&E alone - after the Camp Fire - PGE got extremely paranoid and had frequent shutoffs in the area. The Coop flipped to the backup provider. I think in nearly 9 years of living there, the number of power outages were under 20, the number of extended ones were like 3.

My last two energy providers have been coops. In north eastern California, the coop had one feed from PG&E and the other from a company out of Reno (I forget the name). It ended up being cheaper and more stable than PG&E itself.
Re:Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
on Thursday October 22, 2026 @09:55PM (#50203625)
I've had success with airbnb in the past. Lately, however, I am using booking.com more. AirBnB isn't reliable to handle issues. My wife, her kid and some friends tried a few places a couple of years ago. Most were fine, I had to book them a hotel in Italy from the US (they were tired and not really super focused) because 2 adult and 2 teen women felt extremely uncomfortable and the "room" wasn't as described.

If you look at Tesla pricing and delivery, prices usually well above what was originally talked about - capability/etc a whole different thing with the cyber truck. The 3 engine "cyberbeast" was originally pushed at about 1/2 it's price 8ish years ago.

Not really an Amazon fan, but Kindle Unlimited is something I use a lot. I read 3-4 books a month (sometimes more). Not all great literature, but a way to relax in the evening or on vacation.
I like the warmth setting of more current paperwhites.
