News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

jmknoll

That is a very poorly-written Wikipedia article.

The first sentence states:

"Self-hosting is the practice of running a website or service on a home server instead of a web hosting service outside of the administrator's own control."

And then basically contradicts itself in the next paragraph:

"The practice of self-hosting web services became more feasible with the development of cloud computing and virtualization technologies, which enabled users to run their own servers on remote hardware or virtual machines."

In any case, I think the generally accepted definition of self-hosting has expanded over the years to include software that you're running on rented hardware in someone else's data center.

Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Thursday September 10, 2026 @10:58AM (#49644898)
I don't think its purely fashion here. React Native always incurred a bit of a performance & UX penalty, but many people decided that this tradeoff was worth it for the increase in product development velocity.

LLMs change the tradeoff and organizations would be remiss to not reconsider previous decisions.

Re:Cursor launches Origin, GitHub alternative on Monday August 17, 2026 @05:25PM (#49337858)
Completely unrelated to Origin, but are there plans for closer integration of Graphite with Cursor? A combined product would be a very compelling product, but not much seems to have changed since the acquisition.
Yeah, just like Stalin!

Yes believe it or not in the US you can also buy things from fabricators in Shenzhen.
Re:Toshifumi Suzuki, founder of 7/11 Japan, has died on Monday May 25, 2026 @11:51PM (#48274759)
Thank you. I live in Japan and it is incredibly frustrating to hear people here talk about the exchange rate as if it is some temporary but unfortunate weather condition, rather than the downstream effect of a generation of terrible policy decisions that it actually is
Re:Apple Accelerates US Manufacturing on Tuesday February 24, 2026 @08:42PM (#47146226)
I think what the person you're replying to is referring to is the fact that, in contrast to the US, many senior politicians in China literally have engineering backgrounds, or at least engineering degrees. Although this has actually been less true in the past 10-15 years. This article gives a bit of an overview - https://www.chinausfocus.com/2022-CPC-congress/chinese-techn...
Re:HN Slop: AI Startup Ideas from Hacker News on Wednesday July 02, 2025 @09:26AM (#44443453)
Alright, but DocuQuest is actually a really good idea.

"DocuQuest: A platform that leverages LLMs to transform and simplify complex technical documentation into interactive, user-friendly learning experiences tailored for developers and engineers."

Re:WhatsApp Introduces Ads in Its App on Monday June 16, 2025 @07:13PM (#44294228)
Are you in North America? I’ve found this to be true in the US, but not in Europe or Asia.
I mean, the sitting President was shilling cars on the White House lawn and runs an active meme coin bribery slush fund.

This is not slightly behind Western Europe. This is miles behind any developed country. China may be corrupt, but Xi Jinping hasn’t yet sold beans or cars via press conference.

What makes you think that people eat healthier and get more exercise?

In the US at least, Obesity is on the rise, people eat more meat than ever before, and life expectancy is basically flat over the past decade.

I dont know if this is just baader-meinhof at work or the fact that AI is so prominent in cultural discourse at the moment, but I feel like I am seeing Diamond Age references everywhere I look
If you’re convinced by the materials shared, you may want to consider editing your original content. It’s currently the most-upvoted comment, and is materially incorrect.
This is such a cynical, keyboard-warrior take. Why do you feel the need to drag down someone else's positive and impactful contribution? No one is stopping you from creating a card game with women as the heroes.
It’s the sweatpants-at-work of sports
Re:Y Combinator and Power in Silicon Valley on Tuesday December 03, 2024 @10:05AM (#42306847)
Either thinking they can build something better internally, thinking the new thing doesn't matter, or realizing that it does matter but not having the ability to move fast and commercialize it.

e.g. Microsoft circa 2000 didn't think they could build a better internet. They just thought that the internet didn't really matter that much. Google in 2022 knew that LLMs mattered, and had spent a ton of money, but OpenAI just got a better product to market faster.

Tips are mandatory in France? This is news to me. I’ll sometimes round up to the nearest 5, but nothing like the US.
With a promotion like "terrible, terrible Jefferson Starship video," I needed to go watch it.

That really was just a completely incoherent mess. But the guys with eyeballs on their heads were there.

There's probably a lot of noise in the data. Off the top of my head, climate (whether roads are exposed to freeze-thaw cycles) and population density/clustering (how many miles of road do you need to maintain per person), are probably more strongly correlated with quality than taxation levels.
Did you mean to write LLMs instead of ML? Aren't traditional NLP techniques a subfield of ML?

Hahaha I’m glad I’m not the only one. I can’t find it now, but I’m sure I’ve seen a snarky PM game here on HN before. Thought it might be the sequel

This sounds like a great use case. What is your setup for this? Do you have ChatGPT connected to a smart speaker?

Re:Waymo Layoffs on Tuesday October 17, 2023 @10:15PM (#37924144)
I only know Curb as a booking app for regular taxis. It’s generally less expensive than Lyft/Uber in Manhattan.

I’m not aware of any connection it has to Waymo though.

Two questions:

1. Can you point me to where NPR said “snitches get stitches”

2. Which police departments precisely were defunded?

Sure we have. Climate change, radioactivity, and micro plastics are three major challenges that we have very much engineered ourselves into, and do not appear to be able to engineer ourselves out of.
Re:Tell HN: Do Not Use Docusign on Saturday April 15, 2023 @11:30AM (#35581506)
While I agree with you, I think there's a bit of nuance that is worth considering.

For post-paid subscriptions, e.g. AWS, you've already consumed the service and you are obligated (legally and ethically) to pay for it when the bill comes. You can't change your credit card details to get out of paying.

For pre-paid subscriptions, like a month-to-month SaaS application, I don't really see the issue with using burner accounts and cancelling them if the company makes it hard to cancel. From the company's perspective, don't they just cut off access when the payment doesn't go through? Its not conceptually much different from forgetting about a subscription until the card expires.

More to the point, if the company didn't implement dark patterns in an attempt to prevent users from cancelling, we wouldn't be here in the first place.

Re:Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive? on Friday March 24, 2023 @11:55PM (#35299165)
Completely off-topic, but do you like prisma, and how are you using it (scale, complexity, solo vs team, etc).

I toyed around with it a while back, and it looked potentially awesome, but different enough that I was worried about using it on a work project in case it failed in some use case.

Im so sick of the SQL ORM situation in Typescript, but Prisma might have an answer.

Almost two years actually

Thank you. I hadn’t seen that. That is indeed pretty impressive.
