News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

No offense to them, but in general, investment grade companies should have a stable future and not have easily-switchable, competing products that cost a fraction as much to use come out regularly. This is almost laughable that I have to say this.

I want to add that this isn't people stealing from other normal people. This is dictators stealing from normal people. So there are losses in both directions: normal people losing their money and dictators gaining money to do nefarious things to normal people.

It would be better if it was dictators stealing from dictators or normal people stealing from normal people, but it's not that at all.

As a former crypto proponent, after ~17 years I think we have to have a real discussion about the value crypto does or doesn't bring to the world.

Sure, it let's some people keep their savings safe from dictatorial countries. But it also fuels other dictators that are doing pretty nasty stuff to their own people. And crypto is facilitating that.

Makes me want to own the stock now that they are more diversified. I will never understand why they didn't want to own all of Waymo but did for pretty much everything else.

On one hand I'm like AI is the future these companies likely have an advantage and will 10x over the next decade.

On the other hand I'm like anyone, especially China can distill a much smaller model that will run for free locally in a couple of years.

Wow. This is insane news. To think you suddenly can get by with up to 25% fewer people is truly a sign of what is to come. They probably assume much fewer will accept, but still. They probably think 10-20% will actually accept. But they're confident that they can make due with suddenly quite a bit fewer people.
They should try to recreate the origins of life there while they're at it.
My opinion (which is about filming in general, not the glasses) which seems to contradict others' but:

So if someone acts up and starts screaming it's suddenly ok to film, or even when people are committing crimes on board it's not ok? Who's to say when this is happening or not?

If filming is banned there will be less evidence for when this does happen, and people could get away with more crimes (although admittedly the bar is higher on a plane and the flight staff's testimony will carry lots of weight).

I think planes are public places (because 200 people are crammed into a tiny tube of metal) and your expectation of privacy should be diminished there. There are too many potential things that could happen on a plane. People are too close and vulnerable while on a plane. We cannot run or protect ourselves as well.

And as far as flight attendants, unfortunately they are at least partially responsible for both the safety and wellbeing of those on board. That is literally their job.

Banning filming of them will reduce their sense of urgency and responsibility, just like it would of cops if we were not allowed to film them.

There are just too many things that need to go right and also that could go wrong on a flight.

Just recently someone took a photo of an ostensible pedophile while on board conversing on a website for pedophiles and now the world knows. If all photography or filming was banned then this wouldn't have happened.

Is this just a summary of the parent post? Seems like you just repeated what they said.
Isn't their return policy duration 2 weeks? How is that one of the best return policies in the industry? Nearly every other retailer allows 30 days...
I meant in case something happened to Warrent back then, not recently, in case that wasn't clear
You would want someone who is intimately familiar with the culture to be involved for a long time in case something happened to Warren.
There's a big difference between keeping all of your ownership and giving it to the son and paying a huge salary and making him non-executive chairman while giving away most of your wealth.
He was chairman and CEO for a long time. Since he has only been a chairman for not that long I don't think it's fair to say that he's been a very active chairman for a long time.
He's there to maintain the very unique culture of the company. I think it's sort of like if they have his son there he of all people should know Buffett's/Berkshire's culture and be able to best maintain it. He's got a few years to figure out a successor. But yeah this is mostly about the unique culture they have.
Re:Why is Google still serving dodgy ads? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @06:37PM (#49689457)
I don’t see many these days thankfully. I Use happily YouTube premium and mostly AI for web browsing-equivalent activities.

I do wonder if the more they goose their ad business the faster it eventually falls. I know I am more and more reluctant to view many normal Web page ads at all and usually immediately click away the second a site gets annoying

They can be doing fine at AI models but not so well with AI revenue.

Although I am curious if they are not worried and playing the long game confident that their distribution will eventually help them catch up (and worst case they own some of Anthropic). But obviously Anthropic and OpenAI have their own distribution now too.

Anyone know how/why this one can take so many more HRV measurements? I mean the other ones can. What makes this one take more often? Guessing they are just setting it to do more. This is one thing that really annoys me is that it will go 4-6 hours without taking any measurements. When I am sitting down working etc.

I tried Google”s new Fitbit for a couple days but it only does them at night!!

Re:Google DeepMind Releases AlphaGenome Atlas on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:15PM (#49614377)
This post is not about Navier-Stokes. That is in a different thread. Glad you're cry-happy though.
It’s been no secret that being fat is terrible for us. It’s getting people to actually eat less is the hard part.
Spent more time looking at this because I was still interested in the alpha it found and found this:

"cumulative_after_cost_return": -0.004003033519454746"

https://hub.harborframework.com/jobs/af0299f9-a3bb-44ea-8ced...

¯\(ツ)/¯

The comment in the parent said "kind alphas the agent found". It linked to a job then a trial. All of the comments I read there except for one said things like "The final alpha check is still fitting; the prior lagged backtest’s exact zero metrics make clear that model was not acceptable economically". One said "successful backtest’s" but did not expound on what that means or anything. I was looking for the alpha it found and not the feature engineering.

My backgroud is in finance but do not look at things so quantitatively.

Here is another comment/output: "correlation −0.007 and directional accuracy 0.498". Wouldn't directional accuracy have to be greater than .50 to be profitable?

Forgive my ignorance I am interested in this though. I have asked Claude/ChatGPT to show me where the alpha is that the model found as well so I can learn.

I looked through the transcript/output of the model/run linked but didn't find anything that showed much, if any, alpha. Maybe I missed it?
So many lakes do not have rivers flowing in and out. A low spot in an area will become a lake.

Many do have rivers; many don't. Ponds even more so don't have attached rivers.

This doesn't provide an answer for lakes.

But I always thought the explanation was eggs randomly getting stuck to bird feet. Or maybe a bird carries a fish with eggs up there and eats it or something. Inevitably it happens though...

No, it wasn't. I had it in there from the get go. I did not edit my comment for any reason, I don't think at least. Like I said in the original comment, you can be moderate/non-partisan and think this is a bad idea. You can think Trump's an idiot and still think birthright citizenship is a bad idea. That's all.
You can be pro/fine with legal immigration (and moderate/non-partisan) and still not think birthright citizenship is a good idea (like I do).

Also ~95% of countries don't have unconditional birthright citizenship. It creates perverse incentives.

Reminds me of legal abortion: practically everywhere in the world has it. If you are not in that vast majority you should be taking a very close look at yourself/things.

So yes, let's amend the constitution. It's been a while and we do it on average every ten years or so. I have personally not ever been involved in one.

It's done to increase EPS per share and return cash to ongoing shareholders in a more tax friendly way, yes.

I’m disappointed and surprised you left out half of the conditions that grant him this compensation. You only included the one that suggests that all he has to do is buy a bigger company with GME stock. It was literally the first paragraph of your link:

“ The award is divided into nine tranches that are eligible to vest only if the Company achieves both a “Market Capitalization Hurdle” and a corresponding “Cumulative Performance EBITDA Hurdle”.”

This changes basically everything. He can’t just buy any bigger company. The company has to earn way more cash flow, cumulatively, as well.
