News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

jitler

The problem with both is they face only minor consequences.
I suspect this problem will fix itself. Third world shitholes don’t have nearly the same fertility problems. So the solution is simple, in order to raise fertility rates, become a third world shithole.

And the US ruling class, in an attempt to counter elite overproduction, want to turn this place into a third world country. Can’t speak much about Canada.

Lmao you’ve replied three times retard. You can turn off the screen you know?

Remains me of the derelict shithole I live in now.

I meet all sorts of people here that talk about the past residents of the city and the really cool, technology. One post the other day was about someone’s grandpa who was a chemist who pioneered the encapsulation used in scratch-and-sniff samples. My partner has all sorts of stories about the characters she’s met in her life and there’s a lot of really intelligent, create technical people.

There’s a little bit of that stuff left here, but it’s exclusive to the industry defense. There are hardly any companies hiring for any scientific/technical work outside of that. In their place, junkies, urban blight, and shitty Chinese manufacture ring companies that dodge immigration law.

Re:CARA 2.0 – "I Built an Better Robot Dog" on Wednesday May 06, 2026 @10:20AM (#48036612)
I often wondered this myself, but I realized the answer is just there’s not actually that much cooler stuff.

The jobs exist, but they’re few and far between and often have heft credential requirements and tend to be focused in Asia (China, Taiwan, India).

> Chinese models keep demonstrating that SOTA can be approximated for a fraction of the cost.

Wow, sounds like a threat to nation security. Those Silicon Valley companies shills start donating to select donation campaigns with hope to ban Chinese LLM models.

Can you imagine? Your children being exposed to the propaganda that these LLMs will be inevitably tainted to spew?

> Rehabilitation and figuring out why they are bullying is the correct response in a civilized society.

Your so called “civilized societies” have continuously failed at this though.

You can’t keep failing and then demand your method is the correct method.

> My coworker informed his dad, about the egregious injuries that day. His dad drove to the drunk man’s house and knocked on the door and seized the drunk man by the collar: “if you ever touch that boy again, I’ll kill you.”

Yeah that wouldn’t fly nowadays. Your friend’s father would be hot with a slew of charges from “terroristic threats” to “meanacing”

Re:GameStop makes $55.5B takeover offer for eBay on Monday May 04, 2026 @08:23AM (#48007800)
It’s still way better than Facebook marketplace. At least eBay mostly solved the scam issue. Zuckerberg seems to desire fraud on his platforms.
> I know a defence company that has a bunch of vaxes stored in low oxygen environments because they legally have to be able to provide software updates to firmware they’ve written for the next 20 or so years and it was written on a vax.

So uh, will these ever make it to an auction site you think?

Everything is screaming at me to leave this industry because apparently all paths to lead to becoming a yaml monkey. I’d rather rot.
> Microsoft, your users include developers and power users.

But their customers are enterprises. Until you’re bringing in the money that those enterprise contracts are, you’re a pathetic speck who can and will get what you’re offered and no more.

> This country is led idiots that do not enjoy or like freedom.

This country is populated by idiots that do not enjoy or like freedom. These people didn’t just seize power in a coup.

Re:Ask HN: Is the Job Market Actually Bad? on Sunday May 03, 2026 @10:53AM (#47997525)
Reminds me of back a few years browsing job boards and the only people posting jobs were blockchain companies for some reason.

But not if they got bad grades in HS lol?

Did large blocks of them vote for Tate?
Re:Ask HN: Is the Job Market Actually Bad? on Saturday May 02, 2026 @05:06PM (#47990521)
I suspect the third criteria might be the hardest.

In my experience HW companies are rarely interested software engineers from other, non-related domains unless they’re hiring a team to do web interface or something.

I think in the past year it’s gotten better if you are already established. 2023 was the worst of it for me.
> Both work OK

If only. The optimizations they do on their matching algorithm has made the UX so terrible, I regularly use Lyft instead now.

Hmmmm… I think some mentally ill individuals on this site hate free speech despite their claims otherwise.

And overworked in general. The immigrants don’t mind that part.

Aren’t most of the EE jobs in Asia now?

> Chinese labs are known for just going along with it. After all, you are the one paying them tens of thousands,

Are the engineering firms going to Chinese labs because of their rubber stamp approval or because the process is “tens of thousands” as opposed to “hundreds of thousands”?

The moment you start doing this at any scale, the companies will notice, and after a few winks, nods, and campaign donations, you will not be able to use it anymore.

> I just don't care anymore, and I don't think it is because I got older... I got into tech in my mid/late 20s so I wasn't a born nerd like most of you guys tinkering with stuff since childhood.

I was tinkering since childhood and I was still tired of it pretty quickly. I always knew I do not want to work in software, but where the hell else was I supposed to go?

There was a thread the other day on RF engineering. There were a number comments describing it a “magic” or “sorcery”.

This is kinda how I felt about computers as a kid. I used to wonder about different types of software on my PC. “How does it possibly work”, “How could I make one”. It was this sort of curiosity. Over time, learning how the sausage was made, I just lost interest.

Nowadays I still find myself curious and inquisitive about how things work, just rarely software. Unfortunately most of the “magic” left in the world is a bit beyond my IQ level, such as the aforementioned RF stuff lol.
