Dart should have enjoyed the popularity that TypeScript received. Tough to compete with Hejlsberg though.

Is it though? AI can rapidly push through an objectively better standard if a group becomes motivated to make one. There’s no need to marry ourselves permanently to a mediocre design like we did with C interop.
It doesn’t matter, right? The open models should be capable of reversing anything prior to 2005, no?
Great reporting can come from unlikely sources. If you told anyone from 2013 that TMZ would be a semi-respected publication in 2026, you’d have been laughed out of the room.
I suspect this has been part of 4chan’s lasting appeal: a dead simple algorithm that can be independently verified via timestamps.
I think it’s along the lines of “premature optimization is the root of all evil”. These little micro optimizations take your attention and energy away from places that might be less visible and less enjoyable but more consequential.
Kinda wish they'd just given the money to the foundation and let them still take care of it. Now they're out two million and still have to fork out more cash to take care of it.

If the rest of you weren’t so stupid, our industry wouldn’t have a problem

This attitude is why we’re all still stuck writing C++ in 2026. Nobody wants to admit that they’re not hardcore enough to write in poorly designed languages so we never make the effort to improve the situation. We all seem to agree that Zig is an upgrade over C. There’s nothing inherently modern about Zig that we couldn’t have written back in 1995 - we just didn’t because nobody wanted to admit that C is frustrating and clunky, albeit fast.

Nate Silver’s early 538 work absolutely was this. He was spitting out minitab output from the command line straight into articles to answer fun questions like, “Is Tom Brady the most efficient passer of all time?”. It’s a capital offense that the NYT scrubbed the web of everything from 538.
The steel man is that American requests must be lawful, are done transparently through the courts, are appealable, and don’t come through secret agencies.

The titanium gold alloy man is that the Chinese laws are inarguably stricter and more authoritarian than the US laws, regardless of the actual implementation of either.

If Anthropic or OpenAI fails, the other wins the US market, no? I’m oversimplifying but…that’s a pretty realistic possibility in the face of people thinking sinking one US AI company would hurt the greater US venture into AI.
It goes back to the parent poster’s question of whether or not she was doing it to manipulate people or if she genuinely looked up to Steve Jobs enough to want to emulate him down to his pitch.

What does it matter if you’re not hitting your cap with OpenAI/Anthropic in the first place? This thread is apparently populated with the highest of powerusers running multiple OpenClaws. Us peasants aren’t concerned with meters or cost/token - just quality - and nobody comes close to OpenAI or Anthropic in that regard.
Not that I disagree but what has that consensus centered around?
Re:Why is every rationalist blog post way too long? on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:06AM (#50101110)
Personally, it’s my favorite book and I consider it better than the original series (although the original series is a hard prerequisite).

However, I wouldn’t call it “long” in the same way that I wouldn’t call The Count of Monte Cristo or Great Expectations long. Serialized stories are just naturally longer because readers want a sizable chunk every week/month, regardless of that inflating the total size or not.

Car pollution isn’t likely to still be a problem in 5 years when we’re all using electric cars.
It tells you exactly what it does with your information if you ask it, including this exact scenario, and has for at least four months now (when I asked).
Re:Everyone's Packing Up on Friday October 02, 2026 @05:56PM (#49939108)
This is an interesting idea but was too homogenized by the article. WordPress shouldn’t be lumped in with the rest. GitHub too.

It would have been better to categorize the reasons/platforms and then analyze if the farewell posts matched the crimes of the platforms.

Pretty sure we judged the heck out of Juicero, Theranos, and WeWork on this very website.
Re:GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @01:41PM (#49897275)
Pretty standard business to identify and compete on every axis (cost, speed, intelligence, etc). Often, nobody will be able to maximize every axis so you end up with a polyhedron derived from the axes where there’s a niche for everyone.

DeepSeek understands that. Grok understands it. Every other AI company thinks they need to be the best at everything all the time and it’s weird.

Re:Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @01:24AM (#49888636)
Native Americans overwhelmingly died from Smallpox that was accidentally brought over by Europeans. There is no credible evidence that the transmission was malicious.

In return, Native Americans accidentally gave the Europeans Syphilis. Fair trade? Probably not, although the all-time death totals aren’t as incomparable as you might think.

I guess I’m out of the loop. What’s with the Red Delicious hate?
Re:Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe on Saturday September 26, 2026 @01:55PM (#49858910)
It got you 90% of the way there once you’d translated the problem. I can’t imagine LLMs ultimately saved more time per problem than WA did.
Re:Plunging test scores are a slow-moving catastrophe on Saturday September 26, 2026 @12:38PM (#49858171)
WolframAlpha was able to do advanced calculus in 2009 fully for free. LLMs shouldn’t have affected math performance at all because the tools were already readily available for a decade at that point.
Been awhile since I’ve been in the job hunt but doesn’t Indeed at least have an option to display the number of roles open on each posting? Wouldn’t that solve this issue pretty easily?
Re:Transit rewards (Waymo pays you to take the train) on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @04:40AM (#49813242)
Excluding the fact that drug addicts are still humans deserving love, care and the opportunity to recuperate

So say the people that don’t have to live near them and make enough money not to share public transport with them.

There are plenty of groups that need assistance. In a perfect world, they’d all get it. In our world, I’m putting those that ruin their own lives with drugs at the back of that line.

If any other country had built a school on a former military objective, they would be rightfully clowned. You all would never shut up if the US had done it. Hamas and the IRGC find so much undeserved hospitality by the commenters here running cover for their martyrial choices.
I’m skeptical that multiple terabytes of data were exfiltrated quietly. I’m struggling to see this as anything other than a bluff.
