Re:Ask HN: Does Google “20% time” still exist? on Monday May 13, 2019 @02:34PM (#19902339)
I take it you are a SWE. There's plenty of non-SWE folks at Google FWIW.
Re:Ask HN: Does Google “20% time” still exist? on Sunday May 12, 2019 @09:57PM (#19895904)
I'll second this comment.

20% are a great way to a) pursue your own passion b) try out a new product area c) try out a new type of job

Note that 20% is not a reason to do "nothing". Based on your goals, most people use 20% to build upto something. (a) can lead to a new product, (b) can lead you to gain knowledge of a new domain (c) can help set you up for a different role if you want to switch.

Re:Google Takes Its First Steps Toward Killing the URL on Tuesday January 29, 2019 @09:05PM (#19031962)
Didnt read past the first section since that appears outdated already. AMP Project is run similar to nodejs by adopting an open-governance model. This was first announced here - https://amphtml.wordpress.com/2018/09/18/governance/ and the went live later that year.

https://amphtml.wordpress.com/2018/11/30/amp-projects-new-go...

In the link above you can see non-Google decision makers that drive strategy and vision of the project.

Re:Google Takes Its First Steps Toward Killing the URL on Tuesday January 29, 2019 @08:49PM (#19031849)
The AMP team is working on the exact opposite, which is adopting Web Packaging [1] that fixes the URL issue you are describing.

As an engineer who has an MBA from HSW, I'm even more torn.

Provocative title. I guess that's what you were going for :)

I see no evidence why this isnt another also-ran social network.

Have you tried vscode?
Re:All shared Google Photos are open to the public on Monday January 01, 2018 @09:21PM (#16049382)
The article is riddled with typos. Coupled with the exaggerated claims that "All shared photos are public" leads me to believe this was written purely to get internet points.
Re:Apple Introduces Search Ads Basic on Tuesday December 05, 2017 @10:30PM (#15858236)
Advertisers love segmenting and targeting their audience. With Apple's stance on privacy, how effective will these days be?

In other words - I thought it was widely understood that Apple made excellent products and was poor in services that required personalization.

Re:How to Measure Retention on Wednesday November 22, 2017 @02:55PM (#15759979)
Took a course from Fader himself (author of the linked paper) and it changed how I look at things. https://marketing.wharton.upenn.edu/profile/faderp/
> Someone who can't tolerate the "stress" of being hugged is never going to be able to pull together Toy Story. As someone who worked in Hollywood, you cannot be farther from the truth.

Movies are not produced by aliens. They are done by people like you and I. Similar to people who work at Uber, or Google, or Goldman Sachs. Or at your employer. There isnt a "hollywood" type.

This is an easy trap to fall into. Try to think from the victim's perspective. Countless women had to suffer mental and emotional distress due to Lasseter. Who knows, without such stress, some of these women could have been even bigger than Lasseter himself.

The ends never justify the means.

Re:Using Vue.js and Rails on Thursday November 16, 2017 @12:24PM (#15714527)
vue.js supports SSR out of the box, AFAI-can tell. Isnt that what you're asking?
Re:Technology news aggregrator of aggregrators on Sunday August 20, 2017 @03:54AM (#15057408)
Neat idea, but that font isn't suitable for any serious webpage. While we're at it, the design could be much better. You/They have the right ideas with quick switches in the form of tabs, but the whole thing could be polished a lot more while retaining the original simplicity.
Re:GE’s Jeffrey Immelt Is on Uber's CEO Shortlist on Friday July 28, 2017 @09:27AM (#14874069)
Unfortunately, that's the definition of ageist.

If you cant see what's wrong, try finishing this sentence in your head "I don't want to be sexist, but women .."

The story was discussed heavily few days back and arguably has been one of the biggest news that broke in the tech industry in a while. That's the reason why the article seems to have assumed a whole bunch of stuff.
VC's are only interested in high growth startups. That means they'll have to pass up on a lot of good ideas such as OP's. The whole thing boils down to power law that guides investment. VCs are hoping that out of 10, at least 1 would be a super-duper hit (think facebook, google) that'll offset the losses of the other 9.

In short - go with "disrupting" world-changing ideas to the VCs. If your idea is good, but not great, you're better off finding money on your own and growing it organically.

This is from 2011. I'm not an expert, but things might have changed since the publication of the article.

That said, I remember reading this when it came out and it was very enlightening.

> What have you done lately which is anything close to what Travis built vs. just commenting on a tech forum at his incompetence? At the risk of going on a tangent - isn't this ad hominem? Imagine for a second, someone profoundly successful made the statement OP made. Does your outlook change then?
Both actually. When the long-term prospects of the company are dragged down because of the CEO, its time for some changes.
Travis Kalanick's rise was the result of Silicon Valley's sincere yearning for an irreverent CEO when Steve Jobs passed away. We were collectively willing to overlook any blemishes in the young company, which set up for failure in the long run.

I sometimes wonder if Steve Jobs had still been alive, would he have been revered as much as he was in the 2010s? His management style would have sooner or later caused permanent damage to someone you and I personally know. And that's where we'd have drawn the line.

It's defined few sections in, but yes, your larger point stands.
How does flutter compare to weex? (Native VueJS)
Re:Snap Inc. Reports First Quarter 2017 Results on Wednesday May 10, 2017 @05:44PM (#14312003)
I would argue that's a relic from the past. Most Instagram celebrities also had snapchat to post 'raw unedited' updates. Now that Instagram has stories, there probably isn't a strong reason to double post on snapchat as well.

Or made up Malayalam words such as Melcow!
That was a fascinating read. Thank you!
Re:How Google Could Collapse on Friday April 28, 2017 @02:40PM (#14221943)
Unnecessarily alarmist. It's true that Google isnt making free ad money anymore and other companies are viable threats unlike Yahoo and Microsoft of 2004. Google has lots of monetizable balls in the air - Cloud, Pixel line and few others.
I'm not well versed on App Store TOS, but if this were done by an indie developer is this the response that they'd have gotten?

My guess is the app would have been removed from the store. Uber was able to get away with just a warning.

Re:We Can Do Better on Monday April 24, 2017 @12:23PM (#14185567)
The difference is Google doesn't sell the data to other people. You agreed to Google reading your email when you signed up for the service, with Google.

Its like saying, my travel agent knows my travel plans.

unrollme on the other hand was asked to do a specific task. And while they were probably really good at it, they took it upon themselves to be curious and find more information, black out some and sell that info to others.

Its like saying, you travel agent sells the data on what car you came in, what you were wearing and what you were feeling when you came to discuss your travel plans.

Satire. It wasn't obvious to me at the first sight.
