I believe GamersNexus were talking about doing more exhaustive testing across different brands after their video on LG models specifically.

I think the GP more meant the practice that some ISPs have of shipping default routers that may or may not be able to be replaced with a separate SSID that is publicly available for use by other customers of that ISP.

Not "my network has a default or empty password, I can't make people sign in again."

There's also clip(.exe) on every version of Windows I've bumped into recently.
Yes, based on previous experience with this sort of delisting happening.
1 in 1,000,000 (or something) folk can't get past typing CLI commands in haiku form.

That doesn't mean there's any sense in adapting terminals for haiku usage.

Absolutely a tongue-in-cheek example, but "there's something for everyone" doesn't mean that something is something everyone should implement.

There's also a fantastic plugin specifically for the Steam Deck that adds a bunch of excellent functionality.

Also frustrating when a company adds it after you register, e.g. Spotify allowed me to use spotify@ at one point, now I can't register anything with that word in .

I feel like that ChainsawMassacre channel on YouTube is an example of what happens when The Brand attempts to lengthen their content.

I feel like there's a distinction between _learning something_ from reading a book and remembering plot details.

I am awful at remembering names and characters from books. I'm all good while I'm reading them, but if you asked me "What did you think of John's situation in $BookX" I would find it hard to answer. That said, it all goes into the gestalt jumble of ideas that is me.

I'll say that I mostly read comparitively low-effort fiction that people rarely "test me" on, so it possibly matters less.

Yow, I hadn't realised that twist. Having just read the JetBrains documentation around it, I don't like that.
It's worth noting that this feature is available, but the recent Windows issue [reportedly] ignored it.
I quite liked this line from the article:

> We figured we would need about 100 Steam Decks to pull this off. And as luck would have it, we had that many old OLED prototypes laying around the office.

It's possible that if you don't find it fun, it's not for you.

I had fun reading about it; would probably have had fun doing it. No worries if that doesn't match up!

It's amazing how my muscle memory reaches for the spot that it was on my homescreen in any spare moment, and also excellent that my doing that has faded hugely even in the last day.
Ditto - I'm at the point where I either need to get my mind back into the space to (basically) rewrite an entire site (it seems), or let it die. I like it, but hosting it is doing nothing but cost me money right now.

Hard choices, but it was nice to do.

As I read it this was (based on the previous revision of the policy) - "we're planning to store some data on all users, with no way to opt out. However, in some regions, we cannot/shouldn't store data on people who are 13 or under. So, if you're 13 or under, please don't use this software as we'll be storing data on you."
Tom Kail (of Inkle) did a neat workshop on writing stuff in Ink at a recent coding festival, if anyone wanted to try it out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKlz2hcy8wU
Re:Microsoft Teams as a Platform on Tuesday September 22, 2020 @04:35AM (#24552246)
Statistically speaking have you considered that your connection or hardware might have been the issue?

I've been using Teams for years, and though I had an issue on a call with one guy the other day, otherwise I'm in at least one meeting with ~5+ folk daily and it works consistently.

Possibly a reaction to Valve and Discord's recent announcement of similar (more fully featured) releases. But I may well be wrong, and this was planned for a while, with a sturdy roadmap and a MVP release.
Re:Why I wrote 33 VSCode extensions and how I manage them on Tuesday November 06, 2018 @06:08AM (#18389958)
Is your argument really "why teach them to do something specific"?

Why teach C++? Some students might not prefer that to C#.

My problem at school was always "how do I apply this lesson to an actual problem?" Picking _something_ (anything!) to teach is great (to me), because canny students can go off and use the lesson to do _anything_ else.

If the mouse supports Logitech Setpoint, it might be worth installing it - I believe it has the reverse scrolling setting at a device level (though I've not tested those conditions exactly).

> Which isn't to say that I'm not open to the idea of having a 1:1 lab-made replacement for meat that is indistinguishable from the real thing. I most definitely am. If you could provide me with lab-meat at even just a small premium I'd probably go vegetarian where that option was available.

Question: does that count as going vegetarian? To me that's just going techno-carnivore.

As a few examples, there are a variety of social-network applications (LinkedIn, Facebook) that request access to your platform specific contacts application. They then do a variety of interesting things with them, such as suggesting users with numbers they have "on file" as potential new "Friends", etc. This is seemingly server-side.

Whatever you're using to sync contacts, without syncing them to this contact app, it seems (to me) as useful as keeping a textfile full of phone numbers in Dropbox. You won't have any useful prompts telling you that it's Dave phoning you, John texting you, or Alice's number to phone/text.

This is, admittedly, neatly worked around by keeping your permission requests under control, but... stuff like this[1], from before the granular permission system on Android was available, are annoying.

1: http://bgr.com/2011/08/12/facebook-stole-every-contact-and-p...

To be fair, though, I read this as "I don't want a company closing down/sunsetting a service to end my ability to sync my data", not "I don't want companies to have my data".

So though you have a point, I don't think it goes against the post.

> Direct debit is fine if you trust the other side not to ...leak your credentials

Woah - just for your information, there is no credential sharing required here.

It seems unlikely, given that the permissions system (if we're talking being able to approve certain permissions only, per app) only came in a relatively recent version of Android (definitely >3).

Semi-similar: when I was younger, I really wanted to move to the states and work in SV or similar.

Sadly, I hadn't researched labour-laws in the US (or healthcare, or... well, many things). Seems like a bad deal, now - though a few of my friends have moved out there, I don't particularly envy them.

I think I'd argue that game engines are implementing and running multi-threaded engines a heck of a lot these days - to the extent that if a game _is_ heavily using a single core, you'll see complaints.

I would be exceptionally surprised to see any of the higher-budget games running on a single thread. Low-budget indie games less so.

Personally, I've found that a good benchmark for "what is happening in most games" is the lowest common denominator - consoles.

Having said this, you might be arguing that it's hard to split everything out equally in a game - but it's far more likely that threads are created for the stuff that can be - physics calculations, sound, etc. (the stuff that might have, in the past, be split out to dedicated hardware)
