Re:Tesla sales dropped 60% in Germany on Wednesday February 12, 2025 @06:59AM (#43024465)
That's completely untrue. Both the GOP and AfD are openly anti-EV, so their supporters are often anti-EV.

Re:After 3 Years, I Failed. Here's All My Startup's Code on Wednesday December 18, 2024 @08:37AM (#42450309)
This is the problem with VC culture: it's not funding good, sustainable ideas, it's basically betting.
The economics prize is not an actual Nobel prize, but something "inspired" by the Nobel prize. It's little more than a tool to push neoliberal policies to the public, with 34 of the 56 winners tied to the Chicago School of Economics.

Also, CERN does not have a profit motive.

How much good work have the people reading this thread had to trash because it didn't align with Q3 OKRs? How much time and energy did they put into garbage solutions because they had to hit a KPI by the last day of June?

Re:A Day Job Is So Much Easier Than Entrepreneurship on Tuesday June 25, 2024 @08:54AM (#40787989)
How is this a real submission?

Yes, a day job is easier, because a day job has a very real cap on your renumeration. Work for a company, create a product, have that product generate $50 million p/a in sales? Cool, you're still making the same bi-weekly $3000.

This is literally by design, and if you don't see it, what's going on?

It's interesting to watch the arc of Microsoft being the big baddie, transitioning to being a good dude that the open source community has embraced, back to being horrible.

Except they've gone from being horrible to developers, to being horrible to normal, non-technical users.

AI? Yes.

LLMs pretending to be AI? No.

How long has it been like this though? The meaning of words change surprisingly quickly, but not as quickly as their second-order connotations.

How about we give them an offer: we can bail out your company, but you have to leave the financial services industry for 10 years.
Re:In Defense of Simple Architectures on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @09:12AM (#39441516)
This only makes sense if the engineering teams own the process from end to end, at which point they stop being engineering teams.
Re:Endgame: A dashboard exploit for the original Xbox on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @04:05AM (#39439274)
The Playstation 4 was launched in 2013 and there is no modern hack for it.

the internet was decades old when http appeared.
I would love to see any rigorously documented causation or even correlation between police budgets and crime rates.
I didn't have it in the US in the 1980s, and my wife didn't have it in Poland in the 1980s/1990s either.

Coincidences exist because human brains are absolutely amazing at finding patterns, wether they actually exist or not.
It's weird to see this mashup of "sales don't matter" with HN's utterly lapdog approach to capitalism and free markets.
I'd much rather have a door hinge[1] from Bosch, a company that has manufactured a billion door hinges[1], than from a company that's figuring out how to design and manufacture door hinges right now.

[1] these are hypothetical examples meant to illustrated a mechanism.

A lot of modern western capitalism mirrors whatever the hell we had in the eastern bloc, with the caveat that neither the US nor the EU are 20-40 years after the greatest, most destructive war in their history.
What's the name of the dealership? Cause I have no idea, it's just "that dealership with the chatgpt chatbot"
Re:How does Shazam work? (2022) on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @03:39AM (#38541688)
Right now it's integrated with siri so you just hold down your power button and say, "what is this song?" and it tells you.
Re:Eclipse: The Demo that Sold 3D to Nintendo on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @10:25AM (#38532047)
Web devs do not love to take it away from you. However, designers, product owners and project managers do.
Re:Poland's Most Famous Dish: Pierogi on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @05:32AM (#38529161)
I left Poland in 1983 and came back in 1992. Before we left, I had never had pierogi ruskie. If we had pierogi, they'd either be with fruit (strawberries or wild blueberries), sauerkraut and mushrooms or ground pork. That was pretty much it. We came back and ruskie were everywhere -- and rightly so.
> Not because doing drugs as an addict is inherently a crime, but because addiction occurs way too late in the cycle to really do anything about.

What's your source on this, or are you just going by vibes?

> If you think about it the growth mindset is quite psychotic.

But it's absolutely crucial to VC funded businesses. Current VC groupthink isn't "how can we create businesses that deliver value", it's "how can we create businesses that we can convince other investors to see as valuable before we cash out and move on?"

That's why we have things like "increasing headcount" as a goal, because increasing the number of people a business employs increases its perceived value. It doesn't matter if it destroys team dynamics, increases the burn rate, etc. It's a tool used to make a company seem more valuable before the VCs exit.

This is by design.

Re:YouTube's Anti-Adblock and uBlock Origin on Tuesday November 07, 2023 @08:17AM (#38176364)
It's still one of the best on the internet. That said, if you have the viewers to get monetized on YouTube, you probably have the viewers to make even more money off sponsorships/patreons/etc.
Re:Getting my library cards onto my phone the hard way on Monday October 30, 2023 @11:24AM (#38070616)
My trick for doing this for a summer pool pass in Berlin was to take a photo of the QR code on the ticket and just show that to the scanners.
