I think it’s far more likely that most voters are completely unaware of the inside baseball, and vote based on how they’re feeling about things that affect them personally. As Clinton said, “it’s the economy, stupid.”
I’m surprised it’s so low, actually. AI is defined so broadly that it includes voice recognition and machine learning of any sort, and in any business function. It’s hard to draw conclusions from that. I wish they had kept it narrowed to LLMs specifically.
It’s too bad they changed the definition midstream, too. It would have been nice to see the two lines side by side.
(Thanks, simonw, for the updated chart.)
I think a more apt analogy is that it’s like claiming that most web businesses are unprofitable in 1999.
Bleeding obvious in retrospect, controversial at the time.
You’re implying that Apollo is biased, but the thing you’re quoting is a very brief report on publicly available research. This is the entirety of the article:
“The US Census Bureau conducts a biweekly survey of 1.2 million firms, and one question is whether a business has used AI tools such as machine learning, natural language processing, virtual agents or voice recognition to help produce goods or services in the past two weeks. Recent data by firm size shows that AI adoption has been declining among companies with more than 250 employees, see chart below.”
Two questions:
1) What does that chart show today? (Genuine question. I’m curious and don’t know where to find it.)
2) Regardless of what it shows now, why do you think Apollo reporting on it is noteworthy?
Is dismissing people’s work so rudely how you make yourself feel superior?
Presumably the airline reported it.
Gas is dispatchable, nuclear is not. It’s enormously expensive, and that expense is locked in whether you need the power or not.
We’re already in a situation where we have more power than we need during certain hours of the day in some states/countries, and that’s not even counting the massive, accelerating buildout that will happen between now and the years before new nuclear is built… even it was started today.
They don’t have to be colluding, just lying.
Yep, and renewables + batteries are only getting cheaper. Nuclear takes a long time to build. A new plant planned today will be obsolete before construction ends.
And by “the war against Russia,” you meant when Russia violated its treaty and invaded a sovereign country on the EU’s doorstep? That war “against Russia?” What an interesting phrasing you’ve chosen.
I dunno, man, you’ll have to figure that out for yourself. Wikipedia says “ In total, U.S. government economic bailouts related to the 2008 financial crisis had federal outflows (expenditures, loans, and investments) of $633.6 billion and inflows (funds returned to the Treasury as interest, dividends, fees, or stock warrant repurchases) of $754.8 billion, for a net profit of $121 billion.”
It’s worth noting, though, that TARP succeeded in saving the US economy, which was much less affected by the crisis, and turned a profit for the US government.
I’m been happy with Fastmail for years.
You’re saying that like it’s a gotcha, but it’s completely reasonable, and a later section clarifies that discussing the CoC
elsewhere is fine, just not on the fora that are focused on technical issues.
Basically, the person running the project has made their stance clear, they’re not interested in debating it, and if you don’t like it, take your patronage elsewhere. Clear and straightforward.
You’re getting downvoted because having children is a lifelong commitment, and health problems can come on fast. Raising children while dealing with parental health issues isn’t a choice people make, it’s something that life throws at them. Suggesting otherwise is deeply unempathetic.
That still seems to be the case, though. The AI is for user-driven modifications to the recipe, like substitutions.
I’m not sure I would trust AI modifications myself, or how I feel about the feature, but it sounds like the base recipes are still human-tested.
This isn't reddit. Please don't post cynical fantasies.
I believe they’re saying that property taxes are making up for a gap in funding caused by lowered federal taxes. It’s not that property taxes are federal, it’s that lowering taxes in one area requires them to be raised in another, in order to achieve the same level of services.
This sort of cynical catastrophizing isn’t really helpful. If you have a concrete example that applies to this situation, please share it, instead of gesturing vaguely in the direction of “government bad.” (Buildings in prime locations aren’t equivalent.)
> But the creator doesn't care because
I’ve always found it annoying when people make declarations like this. You can speak criticize a work without attacking someone’s personality.
Why do you believe that? The favicons seem like they’re generated by the UI, not the LLM.
On the other hand, I recently asked ChatGPT for some information about a group of people, and the headshots it put with each summary were very clearly not the people it was describing. So hallucinations do still occur even on the latest models, it just seems unlikely that the favicons would be LLM-generated.
3. A massive sustained oil crisis that can no longer be ignored
Your data is way out of date. Renewables, particularly solar+battery, are incredibly attractive from an economic perspective. That’s why the build-out has accelerated so much. It’s not government hippies (I wish—have you seen the state of world politics lately?), it’s cold hard capitalism.
My takeaway was that, just as paper hasn’t been obsolesced, neither will AI obsolete everything.
> Humans have a bad track record predicting where a technology is going.
Specifically, they tend to overestimate the short term and underestimate the long term, or so it’s said.

> anyone who's a decently skilled software engineer and who's using LLMs to write code is going to be thoughtful.
Is this a definitional argument? As in, if you’re not thoughtful, you must not be a decently skilled engineer? Because I see no reason to believe that people are going to be thoughtful about LLM-generated code. Just the opposite. It’s incredibly tempting to LGTM it.
It would be interesting to segment that graph by bug fixes vs changes, and maybe also significant changes vs minor/trivial changes.
Mathematical solutions aren’t valuable to the general public at all, other than the passing fancy that comes from reading headlines and news articles.
Mathematics is only useful to the extent that we can do something with it, and I would guess that still requires human mathematicians to understand it.
"Both sides" is bullshit. There's only one party that's exhibiting the level of corruption, narcissism, and warmongering that we're seeing today. It's Trump and Republicans that got us into this mess.
How much arrogance is needed to assume a rhetorical flourish is a deep personality flaw?
