The tweet says blackstone. Thats a separate firm from blackrock. And the tweets misleading in the first place, it's looking at the bottom of a candle which wasn't even the current price at the time of the photograph? And the stock closed at about 154.

Besides all this says is that it matters for blackstone...not for the housing market at large.

There are parts of the tech industry culture I dislike, but its definitely not endless meetings, micromanagement, and coworkers who work extra hours. Especially with regards to meetings and micromanagement, which I see the tech industry as having a very low amount of either compared to other industries.
I think there was also similar reports with Apple recently. There was some kind of emergency hotline contact or something like that where authorities could request information where it was extremely time sensitive (I think the example given was human trafficking? although my memory was hazy), and they would be provided information without a warrant.

Terrible behavior from Apple. Like petulant children.

Thank you for the article, although I don't tend to be too disparaging about these types of ingredients (I think) it's always a good reminder to be open minded and aware that you don't know others situations. And on top of that there's absolutely nothing wrong with making tradeoffs for convenience...and its also not necessarily good to take what people claim are tradeoffs as absolute truth.
Re:Xbox Series X|S Has Outsold PS5 in Japan Again on Wednesday June 29, 2022 @09:54AM (#31920127)
You are correct, thank you.

If you click the link about the other week this year, that's where the 8 year figure is mentioned.

You just need to them explain how sweat works. Sweat evaporate -> cool skin -> cools internal temp. Humidity high -> sweat no evaporate -> internal temp increases.
Temperatures are already unbearable in South Asia when there are heatwaves. It's estimated ~1500 people per 3 days of heat wave in Bangladesh. An increase in the average by 1 or 2 C could have very serious effects.

Re:Xbox Series X|S Has Outsold PS5 in Japan Again on Wednesday June 29, 2022 @09:09AM (#31919592)
This is the second week in 8 years in which the xbox outsold the PS5 in Japan. So this isn't overall sales - the title is somewhat misleading.

E: outsold a playstation, not the PS5

Re:WHO declines to label monkeypox a global emergency on Tuesday June 28, 2022 @12:45PM (#31910030)
So you're saying all their comments are automatically dead until someone vouches for them? Or just he was downvoted on reputation?
If you read the article EY have been ordered to retain two independent consultants in response to this.

>The SEC has ordered EY to retain two independent consultants to help remediate its deficiencies. One will review the firm’s policies and procedures relating to ethics and integrity. The other will review EY's conduct regarding its disclosure failures, including whether any EY employees contributed to the firm’s failure to correct its misleading submission, the SEC said.

Its pretty disappointing that your comment was dead and I had to vouch for it.
Re:Why hasn't Middle Earth had an Industrial Revolution? on Tuesday June 28, 2022 @09:20AM (#31907323)
That was a proposed background but Tolkien never decided what their true background was.
Re:Why hasn't Middle Earth had an Industrial Revolution? on Tuesday June 28, 2022 @09:05AM (#31907163)
I was interested in the topic but the snide tone was very difficult to get through.

If I had read it when I was much younger I might have enjoyed it, but I've read so much writing with a similar tone that at this point I consider comes off as cliched. Especially in combination with the verbal sparring with strawmen device.

I was able to get through it mostly, but my motivation decreased as I increasingly got the feeling that the author was researching in service of a pre-determined point rather than doing an "investigation" as claimed in the beginning.

Re:Why hasn't Middle Earth had an Industrial Revolution? on Tuesday June 28, 2022 @08:46AM (#31906950)
The Numenorians actually also had a technological revolution, although I don't know whether it was industrial. They unfortunately faced the setback of being almost entirely wiped out when their continent was sunk by Illuvatar.
My first guess is that giving phishers/scammers the list of all malicious domains/pages might allow them to circumvent it.
Samsung by default has their own chromium based browser as the default.
Re:Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade on Friday June 24, 2022 @12:03PM (#31864436)
That line is simply fallacious in the modern context. A well regulated militia is "not necessary to the security of a free state".
The first two studies don't seem like they lead to this conclusion at all. Someone choosing luxury branded clothes on a virtual avatar is completely different from actually wearing luxury branded clothes.

The third study regarding social media would be interesting if I had access to it. But I'm still wondering if this translates to in person communication.

Re:FDA Denies Authorization to Market JUUL Products on Thursday June 23, 2022 @01:15PM (#31852195)
So as I'm reading this, there are apparently other approved "electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS)"[1], but Juul in particular failed to provide data proving the safety of their products. Which is kind of interesting.

Re:FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market on Wednesday June 22, 2022 @01:16PM (#31838908)
It's consistent with the FDAs current stance to also ban menthol cigarettes.
Contextually the person is obviously trying to use the french borrow word voilà.
All statistics are dehumanizing. I'm no data scientist but I'd imagine including the whole human when doing statistics would produce a pretty low signal to noise ratio.
Re:The computers are fast, but you don't know it on Friday June 17, 2022 @09:48AM (#31778099)
I didn't see anyone complaining about games in the parent comments.
Re:The computers are fast, but you don't know it on Friday June 17, 2022 @09:45AM (#31778035)
If the data is contiguous in memory and frequently accessed it will almost certainly make its way into L1 cache and be there for the life of the program.

If the data is not contiguous it could make the CPU's life much harder.

There's also the matter of program size (the amount of instructions in the actual program) and whether the program does anything which forces it to go lower cache levels or RAM.

There are intrinsics for software prefetching such as __mm_prefetch, but those are difficult to use such that they actually increase you're performance.

Is this website reliable?
Re:Browser Extension to Bypass Media Sites Paywalls on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @11:26AM (#31754421)
Ad-driven churnalist/click-bait journalism, here we come.
>At least one in five children falls victim to sexual violence during childhood 3 . A 2021 global study found that more than one in three respondents had been asked to do something sexually explicit online during their childhood, and over half had experienced a form of child sexual abuse online 4 . Children with disabilities face an even higher risk of experiencing sexual violence: up to 68% of girls and 30% of boys with intellectual or developmental disabilities will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday 5 .

That is absolutely shocking.

Re:The true cost of linked lists on Monday June 06, 2022 @04:22PM (#31645685)
It seemed like this person was talking about an intrusive linked list with an arena allocator of some sort, which isn't ideal but still fairly cache friendly.
