How?
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:25AM (#50243255)
Does that include R&D?

Over time that margin persists only if they maintain their competitive edge, which is not free.

Sounds like he shipped the game.
Re:The first broken iPhone Duos are here on Saturday October 24, 2026 @02:50PM (#50223975)
Imagine if that approach was taken when the early iPhone antenna didn’t work, or the screens broke more easily. Cheer up mate !
Vertical integration is not silly. But you do need to figure out what you’re really good at. And for some people (companies) vertical integration makes sense and for others it does not.
Re:What's Getting Pwned on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:21PM (#50201223)
Simple organisational dynamics. The bad actors are adopting the new tools faster. Things will settle down, as the larger (defensive) orgs catch up.
Re:No More Icons in Every Menu by Default on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:20AM (#50194322)
Every life is lived once. We are always rediscovering what came before us.
Re:Code Is Clay Now on Thursday October 22, 2026 @03:14AM (#50192205)
I like this analogy as it reflects how I’ve been using and thinking about the new tools. Just yesterday I built a thing and ripped out half of it, after realising it was solving two problems and wanted to focus on one. It got me a prototype quickly (the shape of a vase?), but I’m nowhere near a finished product.
Re:Another day another GitHub incident on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @05:36AM (#50163506)
Are you willing to propose and implement the solutions? If so, there are lots of companies that would love to have you!
Re:Another day another GitHub incident on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:21PM (#50154307)
Sounds like you now have your audience for the previously proposed solution.
Re:Monte-Carlo Simulations on Saturday October 17, 2026 @05:37PM (#50135383)
It’s a more useful tool than no tool. We are talking about predicting the future after all…

Sounds like his family is in a pickle if he’s out of town and the server goes down.

Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Thursday October 15, 2026 @03:18AM (#50100365)
Agreed. Similar diagnosis by the sounds of it.

The fact that you’re commenting here tells me you have tremendous mental strength.

If I can add, for the benefit of other readers… One thing I learned is every case is different. Different cancer. Different body. Different support network. I’d suggest to anyone hit by this bus to never lose hope and keep an open mind about options (second opinions, calling in favours, moving, etc). Wishing you all the best.

Re:Were Software Engineers blue-collar workers all along? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:20AM (#50084695)
Why does this supposed distinction matter? Just learn the tools of the trade to solve bigger problems.
It is funny. At some point the code is the specification.
Re:Build your own decision model on Sunday October 11, 2026 @06:07AM (#50041523)
I also found inconsistent results (across time and similar inputs) which made it useless for me. I reverted to using LLMs for coding machine learning. I get deterministic outputs that make sense to me, but don’t have to know the ins and outs of how it works (given how it’s applied). I may try Jev in the future for a new problem but unlikely to refactor something that works.
Re:The smartest Claude Code feature is not for its users on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @03:35AM (#49989525)
I don’t really understand the emphasis here.

Customers pay for things that are useful. If the token drifts from being a reasonable proxy for what is useful, customers won’t accept being charged on that basis (or jump to the best trade).

If I have an employee who works 1 hour and builds me a beautiful cabinet and another who builds one in the same time, with a door falling off, the one with less productivity per hour (token) is not getting a call back.

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @07:06PM (#49985451)
Maybe. Open to the idea others use the same words to mean different things. Will is being imprecise while also being argumentative which is fun.

In my literal mind, someone who spends money has none. They had it. To have money is to be wealthy, not to simply earn it.

Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @11:53AM (#49980334)
I have to imagine in several years when you have a wife/husband and kids and ageing parents your views will change.
Re:Mistral Large 4 on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @11:50AM (#49980294)
This comment contradicts your earlier comment though, where you mentioned “poor people have”, a clear reference to wealth rather than earnings.
Re:Competitive Programmer's Handbook (2018) [pdf] on Monday October 05, 2026 @06:11PM (#49971586)
Two decades learning from others, then close the gate. Can’t ding you for inconsistency though. Your contribution to this discussion is consistent with your new ethos. Good luck with your new approach to the world.
Haha. I like to say: I do whatever I want, as long as my wife agrees.
Cheaper than managing cash, which is the relevant comparison.
Ah, and those services are free?
Re:Gemini ending free use of Flash and Pro models on Saturday October 03, 2026 @08:13AM (#49943600)
I like that framing.

Over the past ~20 years we have benefited from VCs valuing growth and distant payoffs, in part because discount rates were low. Now investors have a preference for nearer term profitability (higher discount rates), thus prices are increasing.

Who collects the cash? Who maintains the kiosks?
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026) on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:40PM (#49937017)
It might also surprise you then, that there are workers who do not sit in chairs.

My broader point is that anyone who can work 4 days instead of 5 and earn the same is an incredibly privileged position. And many others will be nipping at their heels. If you’ve built that moat to allow you to do that sustainably, well done. More often than not, over the long run human drive at a societal level will create competition and this won’t be sustainable.

Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2026) on Friday October 02, 2026 @03:49AM (#49930926)
Sounds like you’re talking about a very particular type of worker. Many people worldwide are eager to scoop up extra hours.
Re:The death of web development education on Friday October 02, 2026 @02:35AM (#49930457)
Nobody is mentioning the other side of this. Technology creates all of those jobs too. The field of web dev, and the ability to earn an income from as ebook was awesome. Things change and what we should doing is going in eyes wide open.
Re:Hijacking the PS5's RTMP Stream on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:29PM (#49899078)
> no one will pay

Sounds like you don’t have a customer, in the sense that I will also accept a free chocolate bar someone hands me on the street but won’t pay for it.

I take your point that PMF is useful to describe a thing. I just see it as a funny term to describe something obvious. But language evolves in different social groups and this is the language of SV. In large part I find it odd because I’m not part of that group and have other ways of describing the same thing. Accepting that neither is right or wrong.
