Time box it. I play video games for 1 hour on Fridays. More than that and it makes me depressed.
Re:Indoor surfaces act as sponges for harmful chemicals on Tuesday September 23, 2025 @09:33AM (#45346817)
I built a window vent with a variable-speed computer fan and an esp8266 that communicates with a CO2 monitor and raises the speed when the CO2 gets too high. I have a very fine mesh on the window screen that's designed to filter out pollen and dust. It works really well. I usually only turn it on at night, because that's when my wife and I are both in the room and the CO2 can really build up.

This used to mean something, but I don't think it does anymore.

I noticed this a few years ago and decided to start giving any automated systems a special email address so I can filter automated email into a separate folder. I only give out my personal email address to actual humans. Its been a huge improvement to only see human-written emails in my inbox.

I've been a mc user for many years, but lately I've been using dired in emacs. It's quite powerful and intuitive to me.
Re:Self Propagating NPM Malware Compromises over 40 Packages on Tuesday September 16, 2025 @07:50AM (#45260954)
I knew npm was a train wreck when I first used it years ago and it pulled in literally hundreds of dependencies for a simple app. I avoid anything that uses it like the plague.
Re:You're a Slow Thinker. Now What? on Monday September 15, 2025 @07:47AM (#45248566)
In my experience, this is how it goes whenever there are more than 2 people in a conversation. The speed of the topic switching defaults to the fastest processor in the group, basically excluding any slow processors from the conversation.

You can always write in reverse like Leonardo DaVinci did.
Re:Blender: Beyond Mouse and Keyboard on Monday July 28, 2025 @10:30AM (#44711242)
The blog post says they'll be using Application Templates to implement this:

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/app_templ...

So touchscreen support will be like a mode you can switch on. I don't think desktop users will be affected.

Re:LLMs Are Cheap on Monday June 09, 2025 @09:48AM (#44224510)
Before I started self-hosting my LLMs with Ollama, I imagined that they required a ton of energy to operate. I was amazed at how quickly my local LLM operates with a relatively inexpensive GeForce RTX 4060 with 8GB VRAM and an 8b model. The 8b model isn't as smart as the hosted 70b models I've used, but it's still surprisingly useful.

It's ugly because an "accept cookies" pop-up obscures half of the page.

Shouldn't kids with grandfathers have an evolutionary advantage?
Re:How to Delete Your 23andMe Data on Thursday March 27, 2025 @07:51AM (#43492626)
Same here. My wife and I are both unable to login due to a forced password reset and password-reset emails that never arrive.
Or different instances of the site on the same server, serving different locales. Only one instance would be running at a time.
Re:If it is worth keeping, save it in Markdown on Wednesday February 26, 2025 @09:58AM (#43184210)
The Markdownload browser extension is super useful for saving webpages as Markdown: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/markdownload/
I thought they were overpriced until I looked into building one myself. The heat sinks were going to be really expensive. The LEDs and lenses weren't cheap either.
I bought some switches from aliexpress for my Logitech G203 and replace them when they fail. I've had it for 5 years now.

Seems like a pain to install. I'm looking forward to this being packaged for Debian.
Re:Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently? on Wednesday April 24, 2024 @12:33PM (#40146475)
I use Blender for CAD. It's not designed for that, but I've developed a particular workflow that fits my needs quite well. I use it to design everything from small parts to buildings. I've used FreeCAD, but it's just too time-consuming.
You're so wrong. With only protein and fat, they would not be able to gain much weight. I've tried to gain weight on low carb/high fat, and it doesn't work. I was uncomfortably full after every meal. My tracking showed a significant calorie surplus, but my body wasn't absorbing it. Adding in more carbs made a huge difference. Hormones tell your body when to store fat.
Re:AI bots are now outperforming humans in solving CAPTCHAs on Sunday December 17, 2023 @08:32AM (#38672728)
I have been locked out of websites for solving a captcha so quickly that it thought I was a bot. So we went from requiring humans to solve a puzzle that bots can't to now requiring that humans solve the puzzle slower than bots do.
Re:Lobsters on Monday December 04, 2023 @09:42AM (#38517852)
I think I would prefer a slower comment velocity. By the time I get around to replying on HN, everybody has moved on. But I really like how articles aren't limited to technology on HN.
It sounds like you may be burned out. I was in a similar position until I changed fields entirely and took a long break from computer work. Eventually (over a year) my passion for technology slowly returned. It helps that I have more time with my family now and I don't have to learn proprietary cloud APIs or Kubernetes.
The skin absorbs the oil. Essential oils in particular are absorbed really fast.

Tea tree oil is an ototoxin. I had what I thought was a wart on the backside of one of my ears, and when I put a cotton ball with one drop of tea tree oil on it, I immediately heard ringing and ripped it off. The ringing has remained. It's not severe, but I've read stories online where people have put tea tree oil directly in their ear canal and were badly affected. This has to be relatively common, with how popular tea tree oil is in products that you put on your head. I bet people don't realize their tinnitus is caused by the tea tree oil and continue using the products.

Also, I have a friend who has severe tinnitus as a result of an ear infection. He really struggled with it in the beginning, but hasn't mentioned it in a while.

Re:Cursorless is alien magic from the future – Xe Iaso on Tuesday November 14, 2023 @07:33AM (#38262522)
Or use a split keyboard and put the mouse in between the two halves. Been doing it this way for years and it works great.

I make it a point to always press the modifier key with my other hand to reduce finger contortions. For pressing multiple modifiers, I take my hand off of home row to avoid using my pinky. (I also use a ortho-linear mechanical keyboard with thumb clusters and a Colemak-DH layout.)
Your son could have dysgraphia. My son (14, homeschooled) struggles with writing, and it was hard to not think of his poor writing as a result of him being lazy or not caring.

We purchased some material from Dianne Craft to help with his dysgraphia: https://diannecraft.org/dysgraphia-what-is-dysgraphia/

The exercises definitely helped.
