Don’t ignore the older wisdom traditions on this question, too. There won’t be a jolting answer in this thread, you may have to work over time for breakthroughs.
Re:Trader Joe’s $2 wine became a best-seller on Monday March 15, 2021 @01:17AM (#26462841)
I care especially about a wine that has some form and doesn’t leave me with a headache the next day.
Re:What If You Could Describe Your Dreams While Dreaming? on Monday March 15, 2021 @01:16AM (#26462837)
I was at a retreat once and we had a dream session. There was little talk about what dreams are, how they function, etc.., but we shared our dreams in the group because the thing we would convey would be something that only we could convey. No one else could share our dreams, or the nuances, or the meanings, or whatever. I think of this every time someone in my family shares/describes their dreams.
My teenage son asked me the other day what "grunge" and "goth" were. I was then trying to explain "subculture" and "counterculture", and it was surprisingly difficult to explain.. or convey, especially in the context of what he's seen so far in his life.

I tried using examples of my own youthful adventures and communities -- still not easy.

Re:On the death of my family's dairy farm (2019) on Friday March 12, 2021 @02:35PM (#26439925)
Yeah, the screen looks the same, I think the Utah dairy had a newer model.

They also mentioned that there were only 3 dairy farms in the state with any kind of automated milking machines.

Re:On the death of my family's dairy farm (2019) on Friday March 12, 2021 @12:40PM (#26438441)
I visited a dairy in Utah a couple of summers ago. 130 cows, 3 employees.

It's a fully automated facility, using equipment from Germany. The cows enter a stall, the machine milks them, gives them a treat, they move on. Employees get a text if a cow hasn't milked itself in a while... usually a tap on their shoulder is enough to get them to walk over to the machine.

Even yet, the person giving the tour said they don't make enough money selling the milk to sustain the operation. They also make high-end cheeses on-prem, and that's what keeps them in the black.

Youtube pays out to creators.
I disabled my Twitter account tonight.

I’m pretty sure my HN account will be next. I’m not going to solve this, but I won’t drown in it either.

Personally, I don’t mind an ad or two. It’s not ads, per se, that have me using an ad blocker... it’s the “bad UI impact of tons of ads and pop-ups” that keep me in ad block mode. When a site wants me to turn off the ad blocker and it doesn’t look insane, I’m happy to comply. Same with DDG.

Re:Two days with Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 on Saturday February 27, 2021 @09:05PM (#26290017)
It’s VWs own argument. The Beetle was “1”. The Golf was “2”. The ID.3 is their third generation people car.
Re:The Art of Reading More Effectively and Efficiently on Friday February 26, 2021 @01:32PM (#26278080)
I agree and disagree, and disagree because in the world we live in, we read more words than ever, but reading books -- things that people craft over time, sometimes with facts and references, and that are stable enough elements in the world that we can have long, thoughtful, referenced reviews and discussions about -- probably less so than in the past.

We don't "review" and discuss blog posts for years on end, the way you can read and discuss books, and books from other countries, in other languages, from previous centuries.

I joke that most parties devolve into a discussion about "what have you watched lately?" and where that discussion used to include movies and films, people at parties mostly talk about TV shows.

So books, for those who are still fitting them into their lifestyle, even after work and family and internet, are slightly more rarefied than they used to be. Moreso than we probably need.

Re:My Company Sold for $100M and I Got Zilch on Thursday February 25, 2021 @01:07AM (#26260189)
I once owned 1% of a company that was 22 minutes away from its IPO and then it got pulled. Then we merged with a Big Brand Name company and there were years and years of lawsuits.

Oh, the memories...

Re:When did generic grocery brands get so good looking? on Wednesday February 24, 2021 @12:51AM (#26247036)
The Good Mythical Morning show often pits store brands against the name brand originals.. results vary a lot, but Kroger, for instance, tends to rank higher (for them) then Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s brand knock-offs.
Re:Unsuck It (2010) on Tuesday February 23, 2021 @01:30AM (#26234402)
Yeah, I just sit it out now. Having a teenager who’s culturally as old as me keeps me hermetically sealed in my vault.
Re:Unsuck It (2010) on Monday February 22, 2021 @01:45PM (#26228567)
I don't mind that one, but "rockstar" in job descriptions drives me batty.

As do "send it" and "stan". So, it's across all cultural borders these days.

Re:Assigning Blame for the Blackouts in Texas on Friday February 19, 2021 @02:20PM (#26196871)
Your position is that everyone should have generators instead of having infrastructure that doesn't require everyone to have generators?

Some people have generators no matter what, but it seems a stretch to think you can't rely on your energy infrastructure a bit more than that.

Re:Poly will be shutting down forever on 30 June 2021 on Thursday February 18, 2021 @01:18PM (#26183417)
They've been sending out lots of messages about this... do you not actually use Play music that much?
That's true. And I unsubscribe from a lot. And I filter the rest. But I scan and review and like just enough content to stay engaged. But I'm moving closer and closer to unsubscribing from all of them.
I spend my day on a Macbook Air and a MS Surface, and a Dell. The Dell keyboard is squishy and horrible to type on. I ordered a Logitech mechanical keyboard but it came broken, so I returned it.. and didn't get a chance to try it out.

Anyone have a recommendation for a low-profile, relatively quiet mechanical keyboard that will not feel disruptive to my Mac & Surface keyboard habits? Something akin to those, but mechanical, would be nice.

EDIT: OK, I'll edit my request for a recommendation: best keyboard of any kind if you're spending your day on Macbook and Surface keyboards.

You have to view and manage and then delete them.

99% of my inboxes are emails from non-humans. I'm ready to stream them like RSS or Twitter.. and catch the ones I care about.

It may undercut itself from the get go, and that may be a common take down the road, but as a weapon, it’s very effective in certain times and certain places against certain people, now.

Previous to this the Google apps got frequent updates. It’s documented out there. Nothing since Dec 8 is probably as notable for devs working on features (but not this effort) as it is to us wondering when the apps are going to be updated.
Re:Google adds Black-owned business label to product results on Friday February 05, 2021 @01:40PM (#26039694)
Bookstores will work around this confusion by placing a card saying "[Author] can be found in Sci-Fi" appropriately.. but that takes more care and feeding and is more typical in an indie shop.
Re:Free Music for Your Videos on Thursday February 04, 2021 @11:15AM (#26026689)
Soundcloud used to be an awesome source for this kind of thing, but their product development has made it harder and harder to find CC tracks by genre.

Recently found and used a track that was free to use, but they would demonetize the track on Youtube. Tricky.

Re:Anger Management on Friday January 29, 2021 @02:25PM (#25961249)
I’ve been looking for writing on grumpiness, which is slightly different than anger. There’s very little out there specifically on grumpiness, though much writing on mood, mindfulness and awareness can be applied.
Re:Apple First Quarter Results on Thursday January 28, 2021 @07:05PM (#25951424)
Yup, in absolute terms that's a concern.

But if/when we ever have right to repair laws that apply to Dell & Apple, based on their track records, I'd probably still invest my future computing dollars in the one that has the strong game.

Re:Reddit's GameStop, AMC surge is the new Occupy movement on Thursday January 28, 2021 @10:58AM (#25943857)
Have you seen the stories about the new Land Rover Defender?

What if "panel gaps" weren't the most notable thing about Tesla's accomplishment, impact and opportunity?

Re:Apple First Quarter Results on Wednesday January 27, 2021 @05:57PM (#25935320)
Last fall I took my early era MacBook Air to Apple and ordered a battery replacement for $99. It came back with a new motherboard too. Essentially a new machine, and it took two interactions: drop-off and pick up.

Last fall I bought two Dell desktops (for a client project) and neither has working Bluetooth/WiFi. One machine has been fully out of commission for 2 months and the other is limping along with weak WiFi and no Bluetooth.

The Dell is upgradeable and I could put 3rd party cards in there and get along. But they’re brand new machines under warranty. I’ve had two tech visits and traded more than 45 emails with Dell tech support and I’m still waiting on full system replacements that will ship in February sometime. I bought these machines in November.

Right to repair or not, I trust Apple non-right-to-repair hardware over Dell “I could repair it myself” desktop hardware.

The user experience of dealing with both companies negates the right to repair concern for me, on these right now.
