Re:GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone on Thursday October 08, 2026 @07:16AM (#50004437)
But if you need to pay brilliant people 500k base salary to use AI well then what is a smaller company supposed to do?

There aren't going to be enough experts to go around. They'll start demanding millions in salary and all of a sudden the advantage is gone.

Re:Why don't more developers "use the platform"? on Sunday October 04, 2026 @09:06AM (#49953597)
Often it's that the internal platform isn't very good and not worth the trouble.
Re:Why don't more developers "use the platform"? on Sunday October 04, 2026 @09:01AM (#49953562)
Same reason they don't use any platform. It's not as good as you think.
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:18AM (#49891334)
If you frame the conversation in those terms, they will.

One of the problems is that by default, they'll avoid changing data structures or architecture that is already written down.

Like a junior dev, they're correctly cautious about breaking things, so they prefer to write more code instead.

Re:AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible on Saturday September 19, 2026 @09:25AM (#49766431)
I think there are sadly a huge number of people who don't care about art or creativity at all. They like the idea of AI and sterility and everything else. Increasingly these people dominate the economy because they are the most willing to hurt their fellow man in pursuit of status.

These people don't go to fairs, it's true, but they do bulldoze the fairgrounds to build a data center. To build a semblance of consent, they need to host brainwashing events like "fairs" and so on where they can propagandize and threaten citizens. They can't hire a local artist to advertise it, because literally none of them will do it. AI comes in handy when you're absolute evil.

HN may as well be /r/accelerate

The AI obsession is ruining every conversation.

All the "LOL you wouldn't steal a car???" posts in this thread miss the point entirely.

AI is cannibalizing information. It is literally destroying information and impoverishing those who would produce more of it.

At a long time scale, AI dominance is apocalyptic even if it never intentionally hurts anyone.

Regulation can mean all sorts of things, including declaring the models themselves illegal.

Tech bros have a hard time understanding this, but a state can and will enforce its laws, even seemingly absurd one, if it wants to.

Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @12:30PM (#49729461)
Superior just means "above" or "on top of". Natural animals don't communicate in logical terms, even if their dna is a logical sequence.
Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @12:08PM (#49729155)
Plenty of catastrophes are available under pure logic as well. The only catastrophes they prevent are accidental ones.

Natural language can build civilization around "do unto others as you would have done unto you".

Logic cannot encode morality, precisely because it is unambiguous.

Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:34AM (#49728644)
Yes. Ambiguity is a feature, not a bug.
Re:Learning Programming in an Age of LLMs on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @08:17AM (#49725768)
No offense, but "natural language sucks" is the refuge of the illiterate logician.

Complex language is clearly superior in nature. We're now finding out that that is true in computation as well.

Re:Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @07:15AM (#49724883)
that doesn't actually happen though. If you fired every dev with sloppy code you wouldn't be left with much.
Re:Tech Fascism Has Come for American Democracy on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @07:10AM (#49724826)
no it's just a "good times creates weak men" sort of thing.

Once you're back to hard times you'll have a whole crop of reasonable people willing to wrestle power at the cost of their lives.

Re:Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @07:18AM (#49710782)
tbf many human devs I've worked with don't think about n+1 and similar issues and need constant reminders.

overall software quality seems largely unchanged

Re:Reverse Engineering My ADHD Test on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @08:15AM (#49520929)
"ADHD" is really having a moment, isn't it.
LLMs will take away all jobs except yours, LLM maker. Keep at it, you're safe!

But in this case it's "exported" primarily to be ridiculed.

We're amused by your antics but no one wants to emulate American culture anymore.

Take this style of discourse back to reddit please and thank you.
American can't win a shooting war in Afghanistan. It's not actually a strong country.
No it doesn't make it possible. It can't possibly make up the difference.
The primary issue they have is not being allowed to become vassal states of US empire quickly enough.

"Western alienation" is created and maintained by American propaganda.

What do you propose to make Canada great again?
Still. Many of those periods. Should be commas.
Re:The August 17 outage, and the work ahead on Friday August 21, 2026 @08:17AM (#49386976)
Website being down is not worst-case scenario.

The errors were pushed to the client just like you suggested...

Re:AI usage patterns in software teams on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @08:26AM (#49360620)
His comment sucks but it is indeed a skill issue. Not the skill of "agentic coding" or whatever but the skill of having and communicating good ideas. A lot of engineers/people are bad at that, and are struggling to produce anything of value with AI coding.
Re:AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read) on Tuesday August 18, 2026 @08:19AM (#49344617)
I agree, but a lot of people don't.

I have coworkers who say they will stop reading something if they believe it is AI.

For them, it's not about quality, it's laziness disguised as righteousness.

Re:Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's on Monday August 10, 2026 @08:04AM (#49242574)
If the "study" is interesting at all, it's because of the implication that driving a taxi somehow wards off Alzheimers... but at the cost of killing you before you get it.
