I don't know who this guy thinks he is, but Learning French is waste of time.
If G-mail didn't exist I would use yahoo. G-mail is much better for me though. I win and Google wins. Yahoo looses. If GS gets in front of Citi on a trade by 2 seconds GS wins and Citi looses, no one else is involved. Unless those two seconds of "efficiency" help someone?
My understanding is GS is company that wants to "beat the market" meaning someone else in the market is loosing. And Google's goal is to make the worlds information available to everyone and show them ads. Google seems more like a everyone wins company.

Once the board found out their hands were tied. They didn't know exactly what went down, but there was a real possibility of a story coming out implying money for sex.
A bug is classified as Critical based on how much access/damage the an attack could create, not based on how it would affect customers. It is possible to have a critical vulnerability that you can expect very few customers to see.

I guess he pulled the plug on the way out

I wonder if(when) the real scans get to that same resolution the public will be informed.
Re:Heavy drinkers outlive nondrinkers on Tuesday August 31, 2010 @12:31PM (#1649925)
Did they verify non drinkers are non drinkers? My Doctor friend tells me that she is amazed at how many people when asked if they drink, emphatically say "Never".
Re:Dogs improve office productivity on Wednesday August 18, 2010 @09:12AM (#1613995)
The "This is my child" mentality is what i would worry about. They treat their dog like a human and expect everyone else to do the same.

I don't know that "marketing research" companies are not already generating databases from FB data like this
It's a series of tubes. And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material
Re:Ask HN: How do I ask for a salary increase? on Tuesday August 10, 2010 @03:27PM (#1592695)
If you ever give a salary range they will only look at the low end. So if you think 50 is fair do not say 40-60. Your offer will be for 40.
Re:Ask HN: How do I ask for a salary increase? on Tuesday August 10, 2010 @01:41PM (#1592314)
two options:

1. Just ask what you need to do to get a raise. You should expect something about the economy being bad as the answer.

2. Get another offer, Tell your current employer that you are very happy with the current job but, they are not competitive in compensation, and you will be giving you two weeks notice the next Monday. The wait to see if there is a counter offer.

I would use them but I only hire ninjas.

Wait until some politician's daughter's "scan" shows up in public.
Re:This Is Why The American Dream Is Out Of Reach on Tuesday August 03, 2010 @05:24PM (#1572804)
My understanding of the American Dream is that everyone has the opportunity to build themselves up from humble beginnings. This kid in the article thinks he is entitled to make more than 40k, instead of accepting reality and working hard to change his earning potential
Re:Rethinking 'Fuck You' money on Tuesday August 03, 2010 @11:06AM (#1571403)
In a market full of speculators that is true. I think the money manager is talking about people who are moving money out of the market because they want to retire, medical expenses, income, etc.
Re:Divorce Destroys Capital on Saturday July 10, 2010 @11:01PM (#1504831)
People can claim that they were deceived when the prenup was signed. "He didn't tell me about his extra bank account when we were married. If I knew about that I would have insisted on a different prenup"
Re:Elon Musk: Correcting the Record About My Divorce on Friday July 09, 2010 @09:18AM (#1500475)
Marriage is a way to call a guys' bluffs. Plenty of guys will say they are in love and committed forever to keep a relationship going. But the reality is they would move on to a younger girlfriend every 5-10 years if they could. Marriage makes men put their money where their mouth is.
Re:How to Lose Time and Money on Tuesday July 06, 2010 @09:01PM (#1492944)
Add a 8 hour delay before a poster can see his karma points from a post. Let other users see how many karma posts have but do not let the poster see the points. It takes away the instant gratification aspect to karma.
By taking the high road of ,we cover real news, they set themselves up for ridicule from Bloggers who cover even more "important" news.
If you are in favor of the capitalist system you have to respect Job's attitude of: "I think we have the best products. If you don't think so please return it for a full refund, and buy a competitor's. Thanks, bye"
Re:I assume I'm below average on Thursday July 01, 2010 @11:27PM (#1480068)
It is matter of opinion. Someone who always drives the speed limit may believe they are better than all the people driving over the speed limit. And someone who drives over the limit my scoff at the parking ability of the slow driver.
Re:Two Weeks Vacation is only a Recommendation, not a Rule on Wednesday June 30, 2010 @11:54AM (#1475237)
You have to take this advice on a case by case basis. At my last job they offered me a 10k raise as I was walking out the door, but also got upset when anyone used more than 3 sick days a year. At my current job I take 4-8 weeks of paid vacation a year and probably could take more, but if I asked for a 10k raise they would tell me to move into sales.
Nate Silver isn't a pollster. He is a statistician that dissects the polls to find the inaccuracies.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/06/pollster-ratings-v40-...

These polls are inaccurate even if the data is not faked. If you are doing the poll for Fox News you ask "Are you pleased with they way Obama is completing ALL of his campaign promises?" if you are doing the poll for MSNBC you ask "Given the state of the country Obama inherited are you pleased with his progress so far?"
I am not using an API, I am writing to the driver
cool, I'll check the nic status before sending if I ever want to maximize throughput. But I'll probably rewrite it in C at that point too.
it is actually more reliable to sleep than to block. by definition blocking is unreliable because you don't know exactly when it will unblock. You do know when a sleep will end though. I also want a variable delay between writes.
