Re:MRI Developers Don't Use RubySpec and It's Hurting Ruby

Ruby is about to die permanently. A language that copied emacs-lisp but with syntax? Lol that gives it features to impress the ignoramus majority but real Haskell or Lisp programmers know better.

I am outraged by your post. Look at start ups as a whole and it is full of white people. By using the "small company" excuse you are allowing an entire segment of the economy to bypass diversity!
Start ups are in desperate need of diversity training.

Ethics prevent a real study where you lock the fatties in a cage and accurately measure the calories eaten.
Fatties lie like a pro when it comes to dieting.
Do you watch the news? Flying machines with guns are decades old tech. Drone versions are actively used. Welcome to the present.
The us military finds drones more practical for bombing.

Seems he already knows the solution. Go native with c/c++. Re-write the front end per platform.
Re:Ask HN: How to help get more women in tech as a male?

Retire to create less competition for them. Then spend money on software contracts to create new seats.
Re:Ask HN: Is 25 too old to get your first job at a startup?

Even the <foreign country> resumes with false ages put down 27-30. Any ageism against 25 will be of the too-young variety.

Shame you are being down voted after the prism program has been made public. This is not as unlikely as it may sound.
Re:Ask HN: Should higher education be expensive?

I don't think the arguments from either side are too simple. People who recieve free college are in favor. People who must pay the bill are not in favor.

You can use emacs + ommisharp. Tooling is surprisingly awesome.
Re:Ask HN: Who IS in the software industry or a hacker?

.net developer by day. Don't have the time to hack after work. Girlfriend and family time.
When I'm able I tinker with emacs, js2-mode, and skewer. It's fun to hack JavaScript in emacs.
Re:Jesse Jackson: Tech diversity is next civil rights step
on Tuesday July 29, 2014 @01:27AM (#8100814)
Tech is brimming with diversity so he can't make a good statistical argument without lumping whites and Asians together as one race. His goal isn't racial diversity, it is the advancement of his race only. Even at the expense of other minorities like Asians.
Re:Jesse Jackson: Tech diversity is next civil rights step
on Tuesday July 29, 2014 @01:10AM (#8100773)
Are tech companies turning people away due to their race? Or are there simply not enough black programmers? If the latter, then diversity for the sake of it is going to be... strange.
Re:Ask HN: Why don't we use ICBMs for transportation?

Similar to why we don't move people with the teleporter in star trek. It kills you ripping apart the atoms in your body then reassembles your now dead body at the destination.
Re:Ask HN: Lisp or Haskell at first?
on Monday July 14, 2014 @11:53AM (#8031475)
I vote for learning lisp first. Lisp is nice in that it is not married to a paradigm. Sometimes a stateful solution is the ideal. Although not part of the language, the interactive environment (slime) coupled with manipulation tools (paredit) make lisp feel like an extension of your fingertips. It's hard to describe.
Haskell the language is powered by the tears of the gods. But it may not have the world class tooling you get with lisp.
Re:Ask HN: Is it worth continuing my computer science degree?
on Thursday July 10, 2014 @08:42PM (#8018298)
Thousands of Americans are debt slaves for the rest of their life because they followed the consensus of "good" advice.
The comp sci field may be the exception but you still have to be careful taking advice from people who purchased their degree for a fraction of the purchasing power required for 2014 degrees.

Ancedote: A college grad made more money with his guitar playing in bars than with his english degree.
If you are generating good income with your skills then you have already achieved the goal.
Re:Ask HN: Developer wants percentage of revenue

5% not much if the developer is the creator and part owner of the product. The product could flop and he makes 0. Spending his time at McDonalds may be more profitable.
Re:Ask HN: Would I be crazy to learn Objective C now?

Learn c and/or c++ deeply. You can target apple with these yet still have freedom from apple. As well as some tricks that can't be done in the garbage collected world. Cross platform native apps to boot.
