Re:Hollywood Cannot Survive Without Movie Theaters on Saturday January 21, 2023 @01:20PM (#34468700)
Agreed. I'll always prefer an Alamo or Cinepolis, but I've actually been extremely impressed every time I end up up at non-boutique movie theater.

AMC has upgraded their seats at a lot of locations now (to super comfortable recliners), and they often serve some high quality wine/beer options.

The only issue I've been having is content. The movie options have been slim these days. If given a choice of streaming or cinema experience, I'll choose cinema every time. But give us something to actually watch please, that's not superheros or cartoons.

Re:USD 4.27B stolen in 2022 in Web3/crypto hacks and scams on Tuesday January 03, 2023 @05:35PM (#34239114)
I always figured buying that NFT was sort of a way to just donate to one of Jack's charities. I hope the buyer wasn't trying to make a long term investment with it.
Yeah, I just leave my helmet on the bike (on the handlebars, not attached). It's not a high value item to steal. Someone took my front tire once but left my helmet.
I'm trying to think of what useful evidence that law enforcement can get out of an infotainment system. Guilty of listening to too many Brittney Spears tracks?
I got a hand written postcard recently from a seller asking for a review. Threw it in trash tho
I can't actually imagine watching NFL without using Twitter during commercials (or after something crazy happens). It's actually quite spectacular

World Cup is definitely going to surge traffic

Same. I always have both open, but use VSCode 98% of the time
Re:Pinboard vs. Raindrop: Two bookmark apps enter on Friday November 11, 2022 @09:09AM (#33560954)
Cool, it's been a while so maybe I'll give it another try
Re:Databases: 2021 in Review and Predictions for 2022 on Friday November 11, 2022 @08:05AM (#33560344)
I love Postgres.app on mac, makes running locally a breeze. Running Postgres fast on the cloud is what I always struggled with (without paying enormous sums)
Re:Pinboard vs. Raindrop: Two bookmark apps enter on Thursday November 10, 2022 @11:07PM (#33557210)
I paid for Raindrop for years, really loved it. But it got extremely buggy (forced me to relogin constantly). I'd open Raindrop, it would completely reset my auth info, and then close it because it's not worth the hassle of logging in yet again just to save a bookmark. And when they clear out login, they clear out everything (including the email). Their iOS share panel was an absolute disaster.

Their UX was great, but it's a nice case study that if you don't focus on the seemingly little but important things (like making Auth seamless and bulletproof), everything else is meaningless.

Dropbox is the same way. Opening a document never chooses the right account (corp vs personal), constantly clears SSO session, and I usually give up 95% of the time instead of using the app.

Re:Musk’s First Email to Twitter Staff Ends Remote Work on Thursday November 10, 2022 @10:44PM (#33557093)
Seems like most (if not all) of the top tech companies are also on hiring freezes.
Re:Musk’s First Email to Twitter Staff Ends Remote Work on Thursday November 10, 2022 @03:26PM (#33552773)
I think it could only possibly work if "subscriptions" were not directly to twitter, but to other twitter subscribers. Premium follows to content creators, charities, individual journalists, or politicians. Where you get some "club only" content and interaction. And Twitter takes a piece off the top
Sorry to hear about your losses. Can I ask, what was the reason you favored FTX for crypto investment?
Looks super useful, and brings me back to the days of installing phpMyAdmin on all my servers

Browsing through the docs, is there some kind of authentication that could be done in app? Would need to figure out how to keep things protected and only accessible by a few people.

Re:Should Twitter embrace porn and compete with OnlyFans? on Friday November 04, 2022 @10:49PM (#33477310)
Why does the Twitter business model have to be porn? Twitter celebrities with big audiences could monetize with premium follows and premium content. Political campaigns could use it to raise money. Tech bloggers could use it to post premium articles / videos.

Seems like a nice patron model, plugged into an already huge network. There are definitely twitter users I'd support via subscription right now, and none of them involved porn.

Great article. I hope whatever idiots at Google who made these decisions are held accountable. I was a Google Talk, Google Voice, Google Hangouts user who also felt their product negligence was going to eventually catch up with them.
Re:Remix web framework aquired by Shopify on Monday October 31, 2022 @01:05PM (#33408856)
I agree, the API on remix seems awesome
Re:Remix web framework aquired by Shopify on Monday October 31, 2022 @12:00PM (#33407685)
Anyone currently using Remix in a production app? Read through the docs and it seems pretty interesting. Can't really get a sense for how stable it is though.

I know from prior use of React Router, the maintainers love the big rewrites between major version numbers.

FSD sure feels like it is. I say this as one of the suckers who wasted my money on it.
Re:Vercel announces Turbopack, the successor to Webpack on Tuesday October 25, 2022 @10:38PM (#33339116)
What's wrong with SCSS modules? It has a lot of really useful functionality that frontend developers like me love.
Re:Vercel announces Turbopack, the successor to Webpack on Tuesday October 25, 2022 @05:49PM (#33336619)
The new version (written in Dart of all things) seems pretty fast. The old ruby implementation was insanely slow, and the nodesass rewrite was insanely broken.

Whatever they got now though is just about perfect for me

Re:Vercel announces Turbopack, the successor to Webpack on Tuesday October 25, 2022 @03:43PM (#33335221)
Agreed. Every time NextJS changes out their build system for speed, its users lose out on all kinds of functionality that they were depending on before.

Moving away from Babel to SWC meant we could no longer use SCSS within JSX styled components. We first switched everything to plain CSS, which was a nightmare IMHO. Now slowly switching things to SCSS modules.

Now with Turbopack, we lose that too: https://turbo.build/pack/docs/features/css#scss-and-less

"These are likely to be available via plugins in the future." Fantastic

Tried for hours this weekend trying to share files from my Mac Laptop to a Windows 11 PC over the network. Both had latest versions of operating systems.

Could not for the life of me get it working. Had to dig up a usb thumbdrive.

I used to have this working fine in 2002.

Stage 4 colon cancer here, diagnosed at 35. I feel like people would do well with colonoscopies in their 30s too. But it's hard to imagine insurance paying for it.

Agreed, it covers up the article text. Complete BS

Reader mode on Safari is a savior in these cases.

Sorry, it won't. Sure seems like it should though right?
I have this shortcut disabled. It still rears it's ugly head on the browser location field (and many other places).
Yeah, that part was laughable. No one in Numenor has seen an elf in 100s of years. One elf shows up, and all of a sudden the trade unions think they'll lose all their jobs to her
If you'd rather watch (instead of read) a summary of the book history in the 2nd age, here's a nice rundown: https://youtu.be/tuRoZ_fbgXM

Lot of great content on that channel, without it I would have been completely lost watching Rings of Power.

Biggest problem with the show is the writing and the pacing. There's really good stuff in Season 1, it just isn't well written.

For all the money Amazon spent on production (it's a really beautiful show), they seemed content to hire amateur writers.

I just wish I could make iOS turn off the stupid "." shortcut they attach to the spacebar. All my google searches look like "how.do i.find.a better.phone"?
