There is often some margin, and it doesn’t take much. Many early failed falcon 9 landings were very explodey
Really misplaced negativity, her youtube channel is a treasure, almost nobody in the world manages to produce a breakthrough in physics research, that doesn’t make them garbage.
Re:Climate Change Tracker on Sunday September 03, 2023 @01:52PM (#37372506)
Imagine a huge vat of water, you add some blue food coloring. it swirls around in there, predicting how blue any spot in the vat will be is very hard. predicting the total amount of blue is very easy.

the confidence on global temperature increase is quite high, you can arrive at the same trend that the serious efforts do with a random selection of a couple of hundred stations and without any corrections. I have done this in the past using raw noaa data.

That was sort of my “aha” moment

how does minify affect the times to decompress and load the css I wonder?
Re:sudo and su Being Rewritten in Rust for Memory Safety on Saturday April 29, 2023 @02:31PM (#35755689)
Sudo had a root exploit recently that wasn’t memory safety related, but the rust sun types would have prevented that too. They remove any urge to use sigils (ie negative 1 or 0 mean something special) which you can forget to check. Its easier and nicer to use rust sun types and they don’t let you forget.
there is loss from the atmosphere when you beam it down

Re:Why Not Mars on Sunday January 01, 2023 @11:12PM (#34214253)
Sustaining 20k people in Antarctica isn’t a problem people can’t solve, it just isn’t at all useful. Sustaining a colony on mars would be useful to mitigate planetary scale natural disasters. The problem is humans as we exist bow are not likely to either spend the resources necessary or take the risks necessary to colonize mars for a long term and uncertain risk mitigation.

We can’t even get a large % of humans to stop buying SUVs with vastly excess horsepower to avoid ruining our planet in a relatively short time frame.

The societal/political problems seem larger to me than the engineering ones, which are just a matter of effort.

Are you a real person?
It is tough calculus to choose a repair even if you do it all yourself. Say a 400 appliance. Its old so worth say 200 now. You need a 75 dollar part. There is some large chance the part you buy isnt quite the right variant you need or you screw up then install and then you just lost another 75 dollars and still no working appliance!
People weaponizing “non consensual porn” to attack this are going to also need to ban pencils, keyboards, and police thoughts. good luck!

and merry christmas

Re:Highway EV charging will soon need a ton of power on Sunday December 11, 2022 @10:18AM (#33943870)
solar cells can have a decent impact on very exotic efficient designs like the aptera. On a normal sedan it is better to put the solar panel elsewhere than the car
plenty of accurate ways to critique elon, no need to make yourself look foolish by suggesting tesla and spacex and other ventures are just ponzi schemes.

But you forget to mention that the disagreements are things like: “I think you dont have the right to exist because you are gay or black or non christian “ or “nevermind democracy trump should be president even though he lost”

People aren’t getting cancelled because they think taxes are 5% too high

Re:Why are male testosterone levels falling? on Sunday November 13, 2022 @08:47AM (#33583009)
You are making strong assertions that are not strongly supported by evidence. Strong emotional reactions can happen for all kinds of hormonal disruptions including both added testosterone and all of the indirect consequences of using it (such as excess estrogen or other imbalances of that may result)

Absolutely some people can do massive amounts of steroids and have no aggressive tendencies, but other people immediately have problems. Its rather notable in some circles, like masters sports where lots of men are on TRT

and who knows what subtle psychological effects are at play, decisions being swayed by your new hormone makeup. Would make for fascinating research delving deeper

“good, leave. invading another people is abhorrent”

The invasion is the war crime and should have been enough for the whole world to respond en masse to refuse allow it.

The world should do the same if the USA ever invades anywhere again as well.

Re:Why car wheels are so flat these days on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @07:37AM (#32835761)
Gearbox serves more purpose than just getting the power to the wheel, it also improves the efficiency of the motor and\or expands and optimizes the usable speed range of the motor.

Also cars can stop way harder than any regen can, massive amounts of energy will be at play and likely any solution is more complex than just grabbing a rotor, which is a more direct way to heat dump

Re:Why car wheels are so flat these days on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @07:11AM (#32835564)
Well the fragility of low profile wheel/tire packages is true at least
Re:EV adoption in US is happening faster than predicted on Sunday September 04, 2022 @09:18PM (#32719473)
Privacy reasons? All the privacy concerns are going into both types of cars.
Could it be because the information age causes companies to compete on price much more aggressively? You can’t easily prove that your fridge really will last longer, but easy to price the price is low.
Re:Why aren't smart people happier? on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @08:25AM (#32410754)
Seems like the correlations between IQ tests and life outcomes related to this ill defined questions does imply a degree of crossover in rotating shape skill and dealing with the ambiguities of life. However that is probably genetic or due to early development , not something where practicing shape rotation to improve it further will improve your marriage or relationship with your kids.
Yeah it is either a fantastic bit of art or hilarious lack of awareness of the irony. The guy actually reminds me of a coworker that I like a lot who is on the spectrum. Once in a meeting a manager was describing why we needed to do some task. Autistic coworker: “oh so we need to do it for political reasons”. and manager starts to freak out and backpedal trying to say its more than just political reasons. Autistic coworker, calmly: “oh no its ok, political reasons is fine!”
Josh is a great person and the internet is also full of in depth aerodynamic and rolling resistance information thanks to him.
It is all electric rear wheel drive with two fans that suck it to the ground, and the skirt lasts a long time!
These are all easily solved problems we are familiar with compared to getting spaceships there accurately. But yes usually these plans call for a swarm of these ships
All cars are doing this stuff, it isn’t EV specific
It certainly echos the approach of other tech companies like google and apple. Save money and reduce risk by not giving your employees any power or freedom to think on their own. Or not having employees even exist when possible. The customer suffers but the customer is also the sucker who used your service because it was the cheapest or free.

its all gross and unnecessary

It isn’t uncalled for, what is uncalled for is how in the modern era you can’t talk about fucking anything without a conspiratorial interjection like yours, always without evidence, derailing fucking every conversation and every attempt to do something good. stop.

Re:Quick Tips for Fast Code on the JVM on Sunday December 31, 2017 @12:30PM (#16041436)
>.(I usually write apis that are utilized by end user apis).

When that is the case you need to think long and hard about performance, because it needs to not just be fast enough for you, on your machine, but on any conceivable end users machine, for any conceivable end users idea of what responsive enough performance is, for any conceivable end uer's work load, which might be vastly different or larger than anything you intended.

further I don't think it is always the case that faster code is less simple. Often the faster option is more simple. Avoiding unnecessary complexity is often a win for performance too, and understanding memory locality and how the garbage collector work allows you to make smarter default choices which often have no net impact on simplicity
