People who aren’t into tech aren’t trying to fine tune Llama2 and then upload it to a cloud machine
Pentest comes across more as checking all the common attack vectors don’t exist.
Getting out of bed to do the so-called “real stuff” is typically called a bug bounty program or security researching.
Both exist and I don’t see why most companies couldn’t start a bug bounty program if they really cared a lot about the “real stuff”
Or his descendants might find a reference to it or figure out it was him ?
Almost everything can be deemed as not worth doing because we need to fix sanitation first.
The author of the post is probably implicitly trying to say ‘everyone [who can] should’.
The person who posted about sanitation and taking “everyone” to mean literally everyone in the world, is being overly pedantic in my opinion.
If more than or equal to 46% qualifies as most, then both the statements would be correct:
(1) Most people don’t have access to sanitation.
(2) Most people do have access to sanitation.
That wouldn’t make logical sense.
Yea, the way it works with hedge funds is, do whatever it takes to make a profit, underlying company be damned - see naked shorting GME.
Where is the “financing” in that?
What about all the companies that “got to where they are now” aka dissolved because shorting to oblivion would generate a profit ?
The fact you are scraping the bottom of the barrel and claiming that just buying stock = increasing demand = creating value should be a red flag.
“No, you trade your data”
How exactly does that happen in offline mode ?
An entity that puts nothing into the host system, but consumes resources from the host to fatten itself is a parasite.
In the case of hedge funds, it’s a zero-sum game. Either you or the counter party lose depending on how the bet goes. In aggregate, society gets nothing, but the cost of the net zero value is high (highly skilled people, taking resources away from other things). It’s profitable but net useless.
In the case of Google Maps, no one has to lose for me to make a journey. It’s profitable and useful.
Saying, ohh but they both operate in a capitalistic system to make money for shareholders is not relevant.
How is that money generated ?
We should absolutely hold Big Tech accountable for their business models and actions.
On the whole though, they have released many orders of magnitude more useful things than Hedge Funds.
Is there a Citadel Maps I can use ? Or a TwoSigma framework like React ?
At least Big Tech has ad-powered useful services.
Hedge funds gobble up PhD holders and the cream of the crop and use them to make 0.1% of the population 5% wealthier ?
I can’t think of anything else that takes so much, while adding nothing to society.
This is quite a naive view of how the world works.
Their actual “job” is to make the most amount of money possible.
A realistic option has to be one that is both technically superior and something a company is incentivised to do.
There is no way they would improve out of the goodness of their heart. That kind of behaviour is worthless under capitalism.
You’re sad that free software didn’t make money ?
I was told they were stealing our jobs.
If someone says.. we lost 10 men in that battle, it doesn’t mean we never knew who they were.
Don’t worry too much about capitalist ideals, we should be willing to bend the rules as needed to promote a system where there is healthy competition and innovation.
If we can do un-capitalistic things like bail outs and PPP schemes to help businesses when their chips are down, we should be able to handicap them when things are in their favour, to help new businesses challenge them.
I think you made a poor choice of words. You probably meant 3rd party apps not related.
Regardless - I also don’t think it’s meaningfully better that Apple links financial and health data to sell Ads vs. Google or Facebook linking the same data from two external sources.
Revenue and regulations are not relevant factors in this argument.
Tbh if you are charging $1000+ for handsets.. why are you trying to scrape my data as-well or show me ads ?
Forget personalized vs. non-personalized. I paid a premium, I want an ad-free experience.
If you play around with definitions enough, nobody is collecting unrelated data I suppose.
When I read removing fundamental woman's rights I thought you were talking about the Roe vs. Wade overturn.
Maybe them catching up to the 21st century should start with .. let’s stop malicious foreign intervention, so they have a chance.
I wish people would have more empathy for Afghanistan instead of berating them.
They’ve just been through 20 years of foreign occupation and a decade of being used as a battlefield for a proxy war not long before that.
> have time to persue
The scenario is commute takes time, you save 2 hours commuting. All other things being equal that is your time to peruse hobbies.
> have opportunities near me
Not my assumption, many people socialise over video games over the internet. There are many other internet social communities. Geographical proximity is not a strict requirement.
> As someone with kids, free time..
Not relevant - see comment above about more free time from not commuting.
My actual assumptions are you commute to work and you can’t use that time to socialise. Approximate round trip commute time is 2 hours not including prep time.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere - If your only possible hobby is socialising at work then it sounds like WFO is for you.
That doesn’t automatically mean many other people are socially worse off from WFH. Many people have other social hobbies they can do or don’t mind picking up.
I’m challenging the narrative that you are strictly socially worse off by working remote.
I think for a lot of people, that social fix is easily within reach in some other form.
