Userspace containers don’t provide the level of reproducibility that is required for a scientific experiment, though.

I disagree. The poet Gary Snyder thought space travel was unimaginative - that living life as things are on earth was more interesting and challenging. Owning the Washington Post gives him control over a high visibility U.S. news operation. Nothing vanity about that.

ah, yes ... there's no success like failure, and failure's no success at all.

I've mentioned it elsewhere in this thread, but installing TLP makes a huge difference for suspend on Linux laptops. https://linrunner.de/tlp/index.html

TLP is definitely the trick. TLP makes a huge difference in improving battery life while on suspend in Linux - especially since laptop makers stopped supporting S3 sleep.
Re:Red Hat to contribute container tech (Podman, bootc, ComposeFS...) ...

I think people are missing the contribution of bootc and composefs. This is a big part of what undergirds Red Hat's new 'image mode' means of deployment. They're using container-related tooling to deploy whole operating systems, and it's a large part of where they're headed.
I write this to say, "This is not them dumping abandonware." To me, it's them putting these technologies under the supervision of a neutral third party to encourage adoption.
