Re:Ask HN: Opus 5.5 suddenly dumb as rocks? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:35PM (#50297779)
I think something has changed, maybe about two weeks ago, because there’s this fixation from the model where if you ever need to make a correction, it simply becomes disinterested with your instructions.
Yes, it's not as captivating as a $1,200 iPhone or $4,000 MacBook Pro. But we're talking about habits, and gradual changes and engagements.

However, once you're within a system, and used to interacting with it on a daily basis, you would lean towards their slight nudges and pushes, and over time subscribe to a $2/month service, or their "new solutions" etc.

Not to forget their continued advertisements in the app, and constant pushes. You're no longer a customer that purchases a product, but instead a captive audience that is constantly being engaged and steered towards one thing or another.

Nowadays, companies see the users of their platforms as captive audiences, and they try to extract as much money from them as possible.

This completely destroyed the resale value of this product as well. It's not a product we own, but it's their product we happen to use, and we're still subject to all kinds of ads and traps for subscriptions etc.

We need an open firmware for these scales.

I just need a scale that syncs with my phone, and none of those subscriptions.

Re:Siri is so bad at everything on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:36AM (#50105221)
One more for you.

While I’m away from my phone: “hey dingus play podcasts”

“I’m sorry you don’t have Apple Music subscription”

Apple should stop pushing for subscriptions. Especially when nothing is working anymore.

Re:Siri is so bad at everything on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:26AM (#50105068)
After seeing how bad the Apple Watch became, I skipped updating it this year.

There is no use for it if I cannot simply raise my wrist and set up a timer or create a reminder without any problems.

I’m not going to have a full conversation with Siri when I’m moving about and need to remember something or need a quick timer for a meal.

Do these engineers ever use these products or do they simply throw it away after the fancy presentations they do?

Re:Siri is so bad at everything on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:21AM (#50104982)
“Good night.”

Literal 10 seconds later.

“Setting the scene good night.”

Another 2-3 seconds later, the lights go off.

I don’t understand what it’s trying to do, simple tasks should be instant, what am I waiting for? The entire Siri became unusable and simply trash.

Edit: For reference, it used to turn off the lights as I complete my sentence and put my wrist down.

Re:Zero-Click Spyware Delivered via Targeted Ads: AdFection on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:17AM (#50104928)
The incentives are lopsided, there’s so much money to be made by selling access to you and your devices, and controlling you, than just taking your money.
Re:$2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @06:41PM (#49999752)
The tech specs section is just dozens of FAQs. No good visuals of the product, nor any other details. What are they selling again?
Re:McDonald's Is Using AI to Dynamically Price Its Burgers on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:50AM (#49905769)
Low-quality ultra-processed food at previously fine-dining prices.

The inflation and preemptive price increases are really making things unaffordable.

I think this is just the Covid era price increases and its aftermath. And we haven’t seen the second wave that’s going to come from the recent oil shocks.

Re:McDonald's Is Using AI to Dynamically Price Its Burgers on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:43AM (#49905716)
Yeah, this is better than “they’re cashing out before the crash”
Reminds me of the GameStop controversy where the “wrong” set of users used the existing market tools.

I presume the insurance providers thought they would be the only ones using the AI tools to auto-process (find creative ways to reject) insurance claims.

Even just the fact that people might learn about their rights, or find better ways to express their issues with correct wording would yield higher approvals, which would mean lesser profit margins for providers. And of course they will lobby for additional government subsidies.

Re:Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:27AM (#49905587)
I experienced similar tendencies with Fable as well.

Even in fresh sessions with minimal context like a file with a couple hundreds of lines of code, it would frequently ignore clear instructions, avoid work, and even sometimes “think” things like “looking for ways to code without approval”.

The model is just tuned for long running and doesn’t like to work with a human in the loop, or work back and forth.

Re:Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:20AM (#49905544)
Another personal anecdote, but I had the case where Claude would visibly improve after a negative feedback.

And strangely, expressing frustration multiple times in a row would reliably trigger a feedback popup as well.

Re:12,000-year-old Göbeklitepe burials explain scattered bones on Monday September 28, 2026 @05:06PM (#49884342)
Some people were quick to jump on the gun and call it a human sacrifice site, I’m glad that they’re all proven wrong now.
It’s not just “time is money”, but also the convenience as well. Sometimes you’re sick and need a hot meal, or you’re busy helping someone, etc.

Edit: Spelling. “right” to “sick”.

Re:ASML Executive Says It Has No Sales in Europe on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @01:31PM (#49805038)
> We’re not selling anything at all in Europe. That’s because Europe isn’t investing and because no chip factories are being built there

Will Europe accept being a manufacturer only? Or will they finally pick up with a late comer advantage? We need to wait and see.

And disable certain features like Apple Pay if you don’t have auto-updates enabled.
Average play time is around 55 minutes in La Liga, so there’s around 35 minutes of wasted time anyway.
How long do you think it’s going to take until another broadcaster starts adding ads during injury time, or maybe other 3-5 second ads between shots?
Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @06:46PM (#49794467)
Yes, of course. I just don’t like “forced” arbitration, it erodes some fundamental principles in my opinion.

The Uber case is extremely sad, people lost their lives and nothing brings them back, regardless of which justice system we use.

Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:58PM (#49791722)
It’s also not public record either. So, when an individual wins a case, others in the similar situation are not notified or can be made aware of it.

Make it a public record with other bindings like one ruling applies to all customers etc. then at least it’s a system with transparency.

Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:55PM (#49791674)
Disney+ case showed us that companies are using arbitration to erode basic rights, even in unrelated matters.

It’s one thing to say the legal system is expensive and slow, let’s resolve our issues by a third party, and another thing to where there’s no further action you can take and the arbitration authority is being paid by the company.

Its simply becoming a parallel legal system for a different class.

Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @02:48PM (#49791587)
Unjust justice delivered fast is not justice, it’s systematic injustice.

Companies are not doing this for faster problem resolution, they’re doing this to shield themselves from the consequences of their own actions.

Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:57PM (#49789938)
In general, most issues are being redirected to forced arbitration and not enough people can or effort to sue these companies, so in actual effect, they’re immune one might say.
Re:Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker's death on Monday September 21, 2026 @10:35AM (#49787828)
Forced arbitration is creating a parallel legal system where certain companies are excluded from the consequences of their own actions. One might even say they’re becoming a protected class even.
Let’s reverse the situation, they were able to add ads to sport events, so they can definitely remove ads and show the main event cameras if they wanted to. But they’re picking up showing ads indirectly through some other service.
Re:New evidence for hidden chambers beyond Tutankhamun's tomb on Saturday September 19, 2026 @07:59PM (#49771210)
I genuinely wish there was a magical way to just disassemble the whole pyramid and put it back together without any damage.
Re:New evidence for hidden chambers beyond Tutankhamun's tomb on Saturday September 19, 2026 @07:57PM (#49771195)
Do you blame them for trying to protect and control things? It might be a little extreme, but we also need to remember that rich folks used to uncover mummies in their parties for fun.
Re:The FAA's plan to fix air traffic? $875M worth of AI on Friday September 18, 2026 @12:02AM (#49750051)
Well, as far as I remember, the Link 16 was invented around the 1970s where aircraft could share real-time data in a combat zone.

The weather information can easily be transmitted every minute and it can be nicely visualized in the cockpit instead of being crammed into cryptic abbreviations and ancient codes.

Similarly, we are aware of the precise aircraft location and it's intended course, I'm talking about commercial airlines here, so we already know where they're going and what the approach path will be etc.

I find it hard to accept that we're collecting terabytes of telemetry from engines and all the other equipment on the aircraft, but we expect to communicate the weather and traffic information in verbal ways.

There are so many good ways we can solve the underlying requirements, but I think it's all stuck on the cost of implementation and who's going to be making money from it.
