In a lot of ways, repl.it is doing this.

Please don't give a free license to companies. Charge them and donate your profits to the dependencies you rely on.
Re:Parcel v2 on Thursday October 14, 2021 @12:25PM (#28866386)
Vite's goal is a mixture of speed and flexibility. Rollup's plugin system provides the flexibility in exchange for slower build times, but that doesn't affect development speed, because Vite doesn't bundle anything in development (apart from CommonJS dependencies, which are pre-bundled with esbuild).
Re:Parcel v2 on Thursday October 14, 2021 @12:22PM (#28866350)
to be fair, that's without Parcel 2's cache, which surely improves build times considerably
The hard part is agreeing on who presents the greatest risk to the vulnerable, and whether that risk warrants unprecedented coercion.
There's this thing called convalescent immunity. Maybe don't speak of what you know nothing about?
> the more aggressive they are, the more space it creates for competition

The competition is not apples to apples. Instead, you have ideological bubbles like Gab, and you have the incumbent network (Twitter) which "normies" use by default.

The problem with the default network applying ideological censorship is that it limits the average person's exposure to the marketplace of ideas. In the context of a controversial topic, this benefits the default narrative tremendously.

If we want to reduce ideological conflict, it's imperative to respect alternative viewpoints and engage them as equals. Otherwise, we risk alienating people into becoming extremists, or worse, we allow the authorities (who work closely with censors and fact checkers) to control the Overton window and propagandize us away from the truth.

I wonder which countries do a better job with managing technical debt, both in digital and bureaucratic systems.

How much research and experimentation is being done in those areas?

Maybe instead of complaining, you can look it up yourself and contribute the data to this thread.
Re:Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed on Saturday July 24, 2021 @02:00PM (#27943067)
Not quite. I'm saying that the Male % and Female % should not be compared as-is.
Re:Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed on Saturday July 24, 2021 @01:57PM (#27943050)
I see regulation as a last resort. Bigger government is rarely the answer. Social media is certainly exacerbating the mental health crisis, but I believe the smarter play is to better prepare our children for social dynamics, healthy communication, and emotional intelligence. I prefer to improve the people than to restrict their freedoms.
Re:Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed on Saturday July 24, 2021 @01:47PM (#27942973)
Are those causes or just symptoms of a society in which parents and schools are inadequately preparing the youth for emotional trauma, how to handle it, and how to not be a sociopath?
Re:Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed on Saturday July 24, 2021 @01:42PM (#27942924)
The higher attempt rate for girls is probably due to boys being more effective at killing themselves (4x as effective, in fact).

Comparatively speaking, at least gender-wise, this data should be taken with a grain of salt.

Males are historically more effective at killing themselves. This data only looks at ED visits and you don't go to the hospital when you're clearly dead. And if you assume "suicide attempt" is using the technical definition [1], they're only looking at ED visits where the patient did not die.

Males aged 15 to 24 were 4x as likely to succeed in killing themselves in 2019. [2]

Not a fan of "skyrocketed" in this headline. Just tell us the statistic.
Re:Show HN: Hammerkit – Build Tool on Saturday June 05, 2021 @01:18PM (#27406841)
Btw, you should add a JSON schema for the build.yaml data, so VSCode can provide auto completion.

Re:Show HN: Hammerkit – Build Tool on Saturday June 05, 2021 @01:13PM (#27406801)
Looks nice. As someone unfamiliar with Make, can someone explain why YAML is a bad idea for something like this?

My favorite part (unironically) is how this is written in TypeScript. Easier for me to contribute features and fixes.

Is he uncompromising on the issues over which his position of power gives him considerable influence?
Re:Grumpy Cat NFT sold for nearly $80K on Wednesday March 17, 2021 @11:22AM (#26492482)
This is obvious money laundering. I can understand suckers paying $5 for a worthless meme NFT, but no one would pay $80K unless they can verify the original creator minted a NFT for a historically significant thing. Some rando minting a NFT for a meme they didn't invent is obviously worthless to anyone with that kind of money.

You don't
This would be a good way to launder Bitcoin to yourself without paying taxes on it. Could that be what this is?

At this point, Roblox has to be a money laundering operation.
Re:Vapor – Decentralized Web over Bitcoinized HTTP on Tuesday October 06, 2020 @05:35PM (#24702569)
The most intriguing parts of Vapor in my opinion (in order of intrigue):

- monetizable requests/routing

- proof of request/response

- data portability

- wallet as universal identity

Re:Vapor – Decentralized Web over Bitcoinized HTTP on Tuesday October 06, 2020 @05:16PM (#24702411)
IIUC, Vapor only uses the Bitcoin network for micropayments and immutable timestamps (block hash/height). Both are optional.

It's called "Bitcoinized HTTP" because they wrap requests and responses in Bitcoin transactions (as the packet format).

The axios example is an interesting one, because there are tons of people saying they're willing to help, but how many of those people will actually contribute anything without guidance of any kind? When the current maintainers are too busy to even provide guidance, you need to be a special kind of developer to even have a chance of becoming a real maintainer, and those kinds of developers are few and far between.
