Re:An Open Letter to the Communications of the ACM on Wednesday December 30, 2020 @05:31AM (#25580484)
Can’t read it. Opened on my phone and there are at lost 7 letters per line - communications is split over 3 lines for example.

Rather ironic that a letter to a group that is about communication can’t use an appropriate technology to communicate.

Why do LTO manufacturers always quote compressed sizes, like we’re in the days of stacker?
It’s no wonder there’s so much call to “defund the police” in the US with te number of anecdotes that come out

It feels to me that the only solution is to completely shut it down

People do not need educating not to spy on teenage girls with drones, they do not need training to not do it.
“dragon cum house”

Are you sure it’s a kids book?!

Compared with coal and oil, and ignoring waste. Nuclear costs more than wind and solar though.
Re:Starship / Super Heavy on Monday December 28, 2020 @05:49AM (#25558213)
To land the volume of one starship on the moon takes 3 or 4 launches of a fully reusable craft - so just the fuel.

To land that with Apollo would take 100 launches of a single use craft.

In the billion or so years life has existed on earth, there’s no evidence any species built a nuclear bomb or had large plastic manufacturing or left anything in GEO, all of which we’ve achieved in the last 100 years.

Progressing to that stage this seems unlikely for a planet with life on.

Yes, two simultaneous shuttle launches from neighbouring pads

Watching the two heavy boosters landing on neighbouring pads was similar - except real. It was that shot that made me think “the future is here”

Re:Starship / Super Heavy on Sunday December 27, 2020 @04:50AM (#25549997)
Statistics say you shouldn’t call your reusable ship a word beginning with ‘C’

In 1963 a LES killed someone, in 1983 it saved lives.

Re:Starship / Super Heavy on Sunday December 27, 2020 @04:43AM (#25549965)
Humans aren’t landing propulsively on f9 either - if the landing fails it just costs money. The capsule lands with parachutes.
Re:Starship / Super Heavy on Sunday December 27, 2020 @04:41AM (#25549957)
About that yes, but remember that a fully loaded starship in orbit can land on any solid surface in the solar system and return to earth (except for Venus)

Starship’s usable volume is over 100 times that of an Apollo lunar lander.

Re:Dasung just released a 25 inch eInk monitor on Sunday December 27, 2020 @04:33AM (#25549936)
Even then it still relies on knowledge that the certificate has been compromised.
Re:Dasung just released a 25 inch eInk monitor on Friday December 25, 2020 @06:15PM (#25539877)
First colour monitor I had was orange, light orange, dark orange and very dark orange - a CGA laptop from my dads work. I remember Railroad Tycoon Ran with option 5,1,2 but Civilisation would have to wait a few years for the full blown desktop 286 (12Mhz, 1M ram and a full 40MB hard drive!)
Re:UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal on Thursday December 24, 2020 @07:21PM (#25532943)
Netherlands seems to cope fine with pot inside the EU.

The whole goal of brexit seems to be to lower U.K. food standards to that of the US.

Wales is a principality. Kingdoms are England Sctland and Wales
Re:UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal on Thursday December 24, 2020 @07:17PM (#25532925)
The United Kingdom hasn’t been United for 4 years and hasn’t been a kingdom for nearly 70
Re:UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal on Thursday December 24, 2020 @07:17PM (#25532921)
Business meetings will mean an esta - like America, same as tourism.

Work will mean a full blown visa. For each country. Imagine if you were a musician and needed a separate work visa for each US state.

Goods like instruments and laptops still mean a carnet (although most countries ignore the requirement for carnet for things like phones and laptops)

Limited to 90 days a year in Europe. lol on the quitter wimps that voted for brexit who own a house in Spain. They can rot in hell.

Re:UK and EU agree Brexit trade deal on Thursday December 24, 2020 @07:05PM (#25532873)
Yes no deal would be far worse - months of disruption, not days.
I gather a lot of “local” press is owned by the same conglomerate
The common problem seems to be the car
Sounds like crowne plaza in Birmingham (UK), a stones throw from new street station. Birmingham is very walkable.
Venice and Siena come to mind

Anecdotally last time I was in central London I counted the vehicles going past parliament. About 1 in 10 was an unmarked car, the rest were commercial vehicles or taxis

Re:IceWM 2.0 – Ice Window Manager on Sunday December 20, 2020 @05:28AM (#25485249)
I moved fro black box to xfce as my WM About a decade ago for the wifi integration. I remain With it on my desktop as I like having the docked apps (pidgin, slack, teams, vlc and volume), and of course inertia. Like the rest of linux it just works and doesn’t get in my way.

However aside from Firefox, and screenshots, everything I launch is via alt-escape which pops upend a new rxvt-Unicode window.

Re:Facebook's Hypocrisy on Apple's New iOS 14 Privacy Feature on Friday December 18, 2020 @02:43AM (#25464786)
I was looking to buy a kindle for Christmas

The ones with adverts which are pushed were available for next day deliver. The ones with no adverts which I wanted weren’t available for months.

In the end I didn’t buy a kindle. What is it with companies that want to splat adverts everywhere.

Whatsapp contents are secure, but who you are talking to - what groups, what time, how often, is all valuable information.

If you are in a group with a lot of Facebook users that have elementary school kids but are otherwise unrelated, chances are you have one too. Facebook might even infer who you are, and your kids, even if you don’t have an account

Do AWS ubuntu images come with a software charge of say 2 or 3 cents an hour?
Re:Child-safety laws may reduce the birth rate on Wednesday December 16, 2020 @05:52PM (#25449877)
There are more head traumas from car occupants than cyclists, it’s odd that there aren’t laws mandating helmets for drivers - 20% of Traumatic brain injuries Resulting in hospitalisation were caused by car crashes - about 1,000 a week.
