Re:Popular songs are simpler and more repetitive than they used to be
on Sunday March 31, 2024 @11:35AM (#39885192)
I still listen to a lot of prog rock as well as classical, more than I did when I was a teenager or in my 20s. But I also occasionally listen to current popular music with my teenage daughters. Some of it I like, some I do not, but myself and my daughters all agree that they would like to hear some big change in popular music. Not saying it should be a return to something like grunge, but it would be interesting to hear something different like that style was.

Re:Linux hits nearly 4% desktop user share on Statcounter
on Wednesday January 03, 2024 @11:42AM (#38856168)
I setup several folks over the years with Linux on their laptops. Usually after they ended up with malware or other oddities on their Windows computers multiple times. I would always ask them what they do on their computers, usually it was 99% web. I would never hear from these people until they wanted to buy a new computer. Prior to that I felt like I was looking at some issue every 6 months or so. All the Linux desktops are pretty nice now, and actually have been for a quite a while if all the person is doing is web stuff. Firefox or Chrome looks the same to the average person no matter what operating system they are using.
The other thing worth mentioning is well, the computers will almost always perform better with a Linux distribution over a bloated Windows install.

I work for a hospital and we just phased out our pagers this past year for some staff. Honestly, I am glad they are gone. I hated carrying the extra device. But I see the advantage for physicians. Pagers absolutely work everywhere.
Re:Ask HN: Best WFH Purchases?
on Tuesday August 29, 2023 @03:15PM (#37312485)
I have had been WFH since 2008 and I recommend adding a treadmill to whatever standing desk you choose. I also agree with keeping it cheap, unless you have a reason you cannot stand or walk I would skip the expensive chair. I have a cheap drafting chair I maybe sit in an hour a day, usually later afternoon. Otherwise I am churning 4-6 hours on the treadmill, walking feels loads better than standing. You can find a reasonably priced standing desk on Amazon for less than $200 and there are numerous options for treadmills now that can easily be moved from under the desk if you want. Just read the reviews, many of the desks on there are very sturdy. Also agree with putting your workspace away from where you mostly live. If you do not do this, you will end up working more than you should. The whole bro thing of hustling and putting work above having a life will just burn you out.
Use the tools that work for you and that you enjoy. I am rocking a Model M from 1987 and a Logitech trackball. I just use my airpods for meetings and like others said, test out how you sound. So many people come into meetings and their volume is either very high or very low.

The site does not look fancy but it delivers. Everyone complaining about someone using that page, why? I have adblock on so maybe it looks far worse for others. But I just see straight up headlines for each topic and it looks current. I did not know this page still existed either, but honestly I like the simple look.

It is very interesting to me that Linux desktop is beating ChromeOS. Not sure what the stats were 10 years ago, but I do not think MacOS or Linux were that high.
Re:Windows lost market share in the last decade
on Saturday July 23, 2022 @11:13AM (#32204037)
Sure the article is suspect, but I have to kind of believe Windows market share has dropped considerably in homes. When I visit my son at college I see way more Macs and the only tablets I see are iPads. Yes Windows has the business world locked up for now, but the youth are exposed to mostly iPads and Macs. My daughters have never used Windows because I have Macs and Linux computers in our home and at school they have iPads. I realize my home is not typical, but with more exposure to Chromebooks, iPads, and Apple dominating the phone market, at least in the US, I think a lot more people consider Apple computers or a Chromebook if they even need a computer at home.

On my radar for the Fall is learning a second language and beginning to learn woodworking. Speaking of that, any advice on the first tools a beginning woodworker should add to their shop?
