News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

yes, but that doesn't give you self-righteous, America-shaming browning points on the internet.
Re:Paradise Papers: New leak from offshore finance firm on Sunday November 05, 2017 @03:58PM (#15631522)
The stupid ignorant masses don't appreciate their intellectual betters on HN. They ignored hollywood, silicon valley, the media, and voted for Trump (with Russia's help of course).
Re:Against an Increasingly User-Hostile Web on Thursday November 02, 2017 @11:57AM (#15611525)
I'm old enough to remember when our pre-bubble, pre-amazon "web"team found about javascript via the web monkey website with it's animated moving arms! Prior, all interaction was via CGI or SSI. I still remember a web teacher at a university teaching a side course, telling us never to use javascript, and showed the NBA site and others. Then a student raised his hand: NBA uses javascript. And the prof, said, "Oh, I have javascript turned off, so I didn't know".
Wow, thanks for this comprehensive summary. Don't forget that counterfeiting formula is easy to do (as a google search will attest). Also, strangely, a blackmarket http://nypost.com/2016/01/07/theres-a-thriving-black-market-...
Re:Ellen Pao: My lawsuit failed. Others won’t on Monday August 21, 2017 @09:13AM (#15064281)
Stop posting evidence, you can see by your downvotes, that when HN asks for "substantive" comments it surely doesn't mean evidence-based.
Even those who actually lived and helped kill those 8 million people in WWII had war crime trials. If any one of the evil white dudes was a war criminal from Nazi Germany, besides being pretty old, and we'd already have arrested them. Godwin's Century has begun.
They used to scream "child porn" and everyone would bow down. Then it was TERRORISM. And everyone complained about profiling. This at least had a smaller footprint. Now they just scream "White Privilege" and no one cares about profiling. Because evil white men deserve it.

As long as it's written in Go, Rust or formerly Haskell
Re:Why We Terminated Daily Stormer on Wednesday August 16, 2017 @07:26PM (#15032246)
I'm really confused, have all the grown-ups returned to HN? Suddenly after several years of self-congratulatory virtue-signalling, HN realizes that self-righteousness censorship is not risk-free, and has long-term consequences? I'm glad I started coming back to HN. Maybe the long recess from reason is over.
Re:A Solution of the P versus NP Problem? on Tuesday August 15, 2017 @11:04AM (#15018853)
When we trust Academia to write their own history books, the theme is always "sooner or later the truth comes out."
Re:Daily Stormer Moves from GoDaddy to Google on Monday August 14, 2017 @07:42PM (#15014052)
Ah, who took the "hacker" out of hacker news? Would you rather have the stormfront members speaking openly, or getting more educated about the dark web, where they'll be forced to go? I prefer they stay as unsophisticated as possible, openly hosted at godaddy. It's not a false dichotomy. Taking away their hosting is not going to end their site or community. Though it does allow, risk-free opportunity to virtue signal on your favorite platform.
Whatever the problem is, more government and taxes is surely the solution.
Next you guys are going to think the CIA's contract with the owner of the Washington Post is a bad thing.
Laughable. Strong states exists off satellite cultures, until they collapse from the plaque of stupid that grows around their weak inbreed elite.
Re:Tech workers pledge to never build a database of Muslims on Thursday December 15, 2016 @03:44PM (#13188208)
Another one-way function? Only people I declare "other" and bad can be guilty of virtue-signaling. Hard to keep up.
Re:Tech workers pledge to never build a database of Muslims on Thursday December 15, 2016 @03:33PM (#13188082)
Indeed, self-righteousness ruins everything. Nothing short-circuits critical thinking like a religion.
Re:WeWork: Now a $5B Co-Working Startup on Tuesday December 16, 2014 @03:03PM (#8759067)
The funny thing is during the 2004-2008 bubble, you were not allowed to compare real estate to real estate.
Re:We Experiment On Human Beings on Monday July 28, 2014 @01:15PM (#8098063)
OKC experimented with the matching process -- the express purpose of their site. Facebook experimented with mood manipulation -- something they have no permission to do -- regardless of the fine print. Facebook is a very bad landlord, but people don't want to move.
You should be put under house arrest for such microagressions as posting these studies about women.
Belonging to HN makes people more likely to think they know everything and every solution is software based.
Re:IRS claims to have lost 2 years of Director's emails on Friday June 13, 2014 @08:16PM (#7891532)
Have no back-ups whatsoever over a 2 year span is believable?
Re:IRS claims to have lost 2 years of Director's emails on Friday June 13, 2014 @08:14PM (#7891513)
You say that now, but let's mix in some gender and identity politics and everyone will be agreeing it was an "honest" mistake.
Re:IRS claims to have lost 2 years of Director's emails on Friday June 13, 2014 @08:13PM (#7891509)
HN is going to have trouble with this one: The techno-utopianism clashes with messianic politics of the chosen one.
The trash heap of history awaits.
Re:CES: Worse Products Through Software (2013) on Monday April 21, 2014 @10:51AM (#7621292)
Software companies can't do software either. It's draconian masters that force usability on programmers that would be happy if the world ran on CLI. You know its the truth, or you haven't really worked with programmers before.
Re:How Can Yahoo Be Worth Less Than Zero? on Friday April 18, 2014 @04:46AM (#7608490)
Stock price most certainly equals company value. That's pretty much the definition.
I imagine this story to be off the HN front page any minute now.
I don't think you know what the word indefensible means. Clearly it is defensible to millions and millions of peopel. But you are too pompous and self-righteous to recognize the cowardice of your own position. Indeed, a hackernews is full of convenient, self-serving, image-crafted self-righteousness.
Re:Alan Kay's Reading List on Tuesday April 08, 2014 @04:00AM (#7552035)
Actually my library is closer to 10,000.
