I wouldn't want to work here either. It doesn't sound like the "newbie" was given any coding standards, the senior seems to think they are not necessary because his way is "the way". And besides, I'm not fond of meetings either, which makes me a newbie.
Anyway, from my personal experience, my personal wealth rate of change was definitely negatively affected by the housing market, due to increase in valuations, which turned into a significant increase in real estate taxes.
I live in one of those places (Austin) where my house valuation jumped by 120% YoY.
But so far, it's worked ok.
Then Apple bent to the will of the Chinese government and removed apps used by HK protesters. I don't live in Hong Kong, and I'm not affected, but it was a red flag (no pun intended).
Then they bent to the will of the new US administration, removed Parler, and threatened Telegram. I use neither, but again, red flag.
Now this. Textbook definition of hypocrisy, maybe?
We were in a holding pattern on Apple upgrades since the HK decision, and now we are two generations behind on iPhones, and (I think) four generations behind on iPads. The thought of upgrading and giving Apple more money is not appealing to any of us, so we'll keep our current devices for as long as they work, while searching for an exit from the Apple ecosystem.
It's just anecdotal, and I'm sure Tim Cook won't lose sleep over losing three iPhone and three iPad sales.
Law, order, morality.. those are things defined by a democratically elected legislative branch, and enforced by the judiciary branch, not by rich suits in closed off board rooms.
In my mind, this is just a cooperation between law enforcement and big tech to get around the 4th amendment protection.
on the other hand, if it was named something like number_of_records it would be clearer.

Also lead devops but I can't find the posting. On-premise pipelines, github, jenkins, cloud, docker, azure, and assorted keywords.
You can reach out to me for more information, at [email protected]. I will keep this email alias active while the positions are open.
That is just me speaking as a non-designer. It's much easier for me to say... go in and find a theme for Cinquo de Mayo in Color Lovers, then try to infer it from these flat palettes.
1. Ubuntu based, since I know where everything is. I don't mean to knock other great distros like Arch, etc.. but I'd rather do my stuff than try to figure out another package manager or another file system layout.
2. Customizable. I make my environment look a bit like windows, with the task bar and all. Not because I love windows, but because I have two laptops, one windows and one linux, and I need a bit of a seamless transition. I am sure if my other laptop was a fruit, I'd want my linux machine to resemble a fruit.
3. I need my desktop right click context menu, with a command line option.
For the longest time I used Xubuntu. I still think Xfce is the best out there, but its glacial rate of movement made me look in other places. It is falling behind in some things such as multi-monitor support with docking stations.
I now use Ubuntu 17.10 with Gnome shell. I was able to make it look almost like my Xfce setup. I had to turn off Wayland, since it was causing gnome to crash randomly on wake from sleep and close all my apps. It is also far less customizable than xfce, and some things are unexpectedly buggier (the terminal window loses cut and paste abilities randomly, and I cannot replace the console shortcut in the desktop context menu with Terminator).
I may yet go back to Xubuntu. Not sure.
"Windows 10 is no more secure than Windows 7 — which is to say it is a profoundly insecure operating system. "
You are going to back up your statement with some proof, right?
"but just because Microsoft didn’t botch things as badly as Apple did doesn’t get it off the hook. I mean, what do you call it when Microsoft fixes security holes in Windows 10 that it doesn’t patch in Windows 7?"
Ah, so it's more secure than Windows 7, you mean? And maybe, Apple?
"I’m sticking with Windows 7 on my Windows machines, and I recommend you do too"
You still haven't told me why?
--- That said, I hate Windows 10 for one thing: its update process. I am one of those people who almost never shut down their machines, they are either on, or sleeping. That means, I leave my apps open, and I expect them open when I come back. If freakin' windows decided to reboot my computer without my permission, it means it will shut down my VMs dirty, and potentially cause me to lose data in some apps. By far, this is my biggest annoyance with Windows 10.
There are two things that keep me on Chromium - that, and the ability to appify a website.
