95% of yearly US medical exams:

doctor tells patient to lose weight. patient does not comply, and is even heavier next year

no I'm talking about the part where poor Americans who join the armed forces go to foreign countries, are asked to kill people and sometimes die themselves
> I was just buying a laptop for my family and the prices of MacBooks here in Europe are utterly crazy.

they'll sell just fine in the US and parts of Asia

the EU is becoming poor, and its being reflected in the costs of imported goods

"ending US hegemony" is something every average American should cheer.
....meanwhile, in the US, the state of California continues to pursue ways to compel you to pay state taxes to the FTB after you have left the state

We have exit visas too, of a sort

Re:Building a New American Arsenal on Sunday April 02, 2023 @12:23PM (#35412220)
not one mention of Zumwalt or LCS in this article

you cannot talk about (re)building the military without discussing the decades and billions wasted pursuing pipe dreams and failed ideas

right now we are building an LCS that will be scrapped within a year of it being put to sea...we still have LCSs that even haven't had their keels laid...which will meet the same fate! say it out loud: "we don't want the LCS and will scrap them...can you build us eight more please?"

do you think the Chinese Navy is ordering boats they don't want?

and try spending some money on people, and I don't just mean better soldier pay...look at the pathetic physical condition of today's soldiers...what % of the armed forces are medically obese? go watch random military videos on youtube and see the guts hanging over the belts...its just pathetic

Re:Colleges Should Be More Than Just Vocational Schools on Sunday April 02, 2023 @12:09PM (#35412063)
yet another humanities prof who believes that the humanities alone occupy the academic high ground

not taking philosophy? well then, you must be one of those wrench turners just looking for job skills!

is math a "vocational skill"? mathematics has a much deeper and more storied intellectual pedigree than say, art history (which has only existed for a couple of centuries at best and has little more to offer than commentary)

how about physics? we have wondered about the forces of the universe far longer than we have studied sociology...be easy on Newton, he was just trying to get a job!

humanities never had, and do not deserve, the penthouse of the ivory tower

Re:What Broke Sweden? Real Estate Bust Exposes Big Divide on Saturday April 01, 2023 @07:55PM (#35405509)
American MSM believes Japan, Norway, Germany and Sweden are utopias
Re:What Broke Sweden? Real Estate Bust Exposes Big Divide on Saturday April 01, 2023 @07:47PM (#35405443)
also UN Agenda 21, a set of guidelines discussed back in 1992 that calls for a single global government, single currency, single control of all schools, etc

its not even trying to hide any of this, you can still find it on the web

this was the goal of Lenin and Trotsky - complete destruction of the idea of the individual person

as one woman on YouTube commented - Agenda21 is a conspiracy, but its definitely not a theory

WEF seems to have become a later-day manifestation of Agenda21

Re:What Broke Sweden? Real Estate Bust Exposes Big Divide on Saturday April 01, 2023 @07:38PM (#35405374)
sshhh, you'll bust the mythological socialist Utopia vision American liberals have of Sweden

No different than the mythological visions they have about Canadian healthcare

well go take a look at TARP and ask yourself if America has an aversion to bailing out the elite and wealthy

HN readers decry it all while desperately trying to join the club

I've run mattermost for a moderate sized team while doing my dev duties, it was never a bother...what specific problems did you have?

I maybe spent fifteen minutes a month on upgrades

why jump at the sign of a first leak? you can usually get another full year of slacking off at full pay while the parent company dithers around

unless you see truly greener pastures elsewhere, getting acquired is one of the best gigs in IT

well Stewart always had the choice of going it alone and building out Slack as its own brand, but he took the $$$

he had the same experience with Yahoo buying Flickr so its not like any of this should have surprised him...he still consented to the acquisition of Slack

no difference here from the WhatsApp guys who took a ton of money and then pooped on Facebook...be happy you got the money and understand that you agreed to be acquired

its free-as-in-beer which is all 99% of orgs want

it also provides 99% of the functionality most orgs actually care about

> Cars are getting so big that people can’t drive them

and likewise, people are getting so big they can't drive their cars...

in Texas, police officers in some municipalities have requested that their vehicles be modified to elevate the steering wheel...they literally cannot jam their stomachs between the seat and the wheel, and if they push the seat back far enough they cannot reach the pedals

its not like people are just healthy and then when they hit 70, poof!

obese people will have health issues from early adulthood onward

healthcare isn't the answer - the doctor says "lose weight", and people ignore it or make excuses and are even more obese at their next checkup

....and even HN continues to dispute that diet and exercise are essential for longevity
Re:Ask HN: What is the worst thing about Rust? on Friday March 31, 2023 @03:36PM (#35392315)
Hiding magic in macros
virtue signaling by legislation

too bad for whoever is Governor in 2035 and has to reality check Californians

> This will also be an opportunity for other car manufacturers to differentiate themselves: “We still support CarPlay”

but I doubt CarPlay will even end up as the lowest-common-denominator...one of GM or Mercedes or whoever will try to get their system good enough that they can license it to other car companies...so CarOS or whatever will be the default if your car brand doesn't have a bespoke experience

I like Android Auto and use it all the time, but I can't fault GM for not wanting to be treated as just another OEM...FoxConn does all the hard work for Apple on the hardware side and isn't even allowed to put their name on the product...the ultimate replaceable cog

Apple might have been received better by car makers if it hadn't threatened to be developing their own vehicle...now all the car makers see them as a competitive threat

who told you the Fed is going to cut rates?

even the CNBC talking heads go only so far as to talk about a pause in rate hikes

problem is (from GM's perspective), with CarPlay, Apple takes over the UX of the car...the Apple logo is the first and last thing people see when driving

GM doesn't want Apple or Google taking over the UX of the car, because then GM is eventually just another FoxConn

and sure, there's a money thing...they want revshare from Spotify and every other app they can position in the UI

CarPlay and Android Auto will be gone as fast as car makers can make it happen

Re:Pairing with GPT-4 · Fly on Friday March 31, 2023 @11:45AM (#35388851)
I have to ask why fly.io staff spend so much time blogging and catering to HN...
I predict Google will be going through major changes in the next twelve months...they've been caught off-guard by OpenAI/Bing...Google isn't used to playing defense and having to fight for search marketshare

by some measures, Google is number 4 in cloud...definitely no better than number 3...you have to wonder if it is worth it for Google to be an also-ran

> Microsoft should have just made F# the C# successor.

their target audience does not want this

it was well publicized that Google was turning the screws on its GCP sales staff...maybe this is a put-up-or-shut-up moment for GCP to bring in more money...assuming the sales drives didn't yield
Re:Janet for Mortals on Friday March 31, 2023 @10:04AM (#35387340)
Janet users are not encumbered with the historical cruft of scheme like hiding libraries behind unmenorable srfi numbers, or the ancient an un-portable oop implementations etc etc
Re:Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone? on Friday March 31, 2023 @06:55AM (#35385125)
the next wave of innovation will be things like battery tech, deep AI

in other words, nothing a React dev is going to put together in their kitchen

realistically, the unemployed will end up competing with the ten of thousands of new devs coming out of college and bootcamps...the guy who cleans our pool is learning python as part of his online coding degree (really)

Re:Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone? on Friday March 31, 2023 @06:49AM (#35385077)
having worked at Google doesn't make you a good saver or dictate a sustainable lifestyle
