I am about 300 points higher and think this is roughly correct. In openings amateurs will actually analyze more since GMs just have hundreds of opening lines memorized many moves deep. Middlegame and endgame there're usually just 1-3 reasonable plans that are immediately obvious to a GM (but not at all obvious to amateurs) with 1-3 initial moves each. So, again, probably about as many as I consider.

The only time when GM will definitely analyze more lines than an amateur is in a highly tactical position but that happens, again, maybe 1-3 times per typical game (tactics themselves will last several moves, but they would be largely calculated through at the beginning of the tactical melee).

They may not be $2T company but they are also definitely not a $200-300B one. Their Q1-Q3 revenue is $33B with $17B in Q3. Even if they magically flatline for Q4, that's $50B revenue for the year. There are exceedingly few tech companies with P/S of 6 or less (equivalent to $200-300B valuation with $50B revenue) and we all know Anthropic's revenue will not be anything remotely like flatline for awhile.
US STEM education through high school is 2-4 years behind the old USSR. Meaning what was taught to 10-year-olds in the USSR was/is taught to 12-14-year-olds in the US
Thank you (edit: and/or devs) for doing this! HOMM2 was amazing

A hypothetical... suppose AI "solves" (for your preferred definition of "solve") your field and what you used to do becomes useless or near-useless. But you still enjoy doing it and you also get UBI that provides for comfortable lifestyle regardless of what you choose to do.

Questions: (1) Do you still weep for what has transpired? (2) Do you continue to do what you used to do (with optional AI assistance)?

For me: (1) no, (2) yes and I think the same would be true for most people. So I can't help but believe that most of the anguish about AI is far more about a direct economic hit to people's livelihoods than it is about the impact to their respective fields. Which is more than reasonable. But then why not frame the conversation that way instead of beating around the bush?

Gemini's (at least for Flash 3.6 - 3.8) writing feels quite "human" to me
Wouldn't it have been more useful/conclusive if the study had another control group or two with non-AI based assistance (access to math books, access to calculator, access to human experts, etc)?
Very cool, thanks for posting!

And shame on all the people shitting on it because AI made it. If you valued art for art's sake, you wouldn't be so bothered when somebody makes something art-adjacent using some technique you don't approve of. It in no way detracts from the kind of art you admire. Don't be type who just has to let others know that you find something they like to be beneath you.
