The system may return, but less diversity means less resiliency. The 'return' isn't a return to baseline. That system return is an attempt to attain a state of function that is no longer available. That leaves this returned system in a constant state of stress. Stress on any system reduces function, increases failure rates, and extends repair times greatly. When a stressed system attempts to heal, many factors inhibit or outright prevent healing from occuring.

That's all observation, reasoning, and logic. Merely observing what occurs in a system that loses or gains is enough data to make fairly striking conclusions. The systems never return to baseline. Not once. Not ever. We've never observed a return to baseline after a species is destroyed, nor if an invasive species enters the system.

Once balance is lost, it cannot be attained again. Will not be. Has not been. Observed data is clear about this pattern. There is no equilibrium. There is a system that is functioning and then there is a system that no longer functions. There are no return to function systems in nature. Humans have not observed a mechanism that would bring that about, nor observed the occurrence of such.

One failure leads to another, and to another. Cascading. That's what we observe over generations of data collection.

Little boxes, little boxes, little boxes made out of ticky tacky. Little boxes made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

The agents are trained by contained data. All agents. Similar data sets. Human knowledge packaged into little boxes that all look just the same.

When the boxes are doing all the work for us, the differences between them will come down to color.

There’s yellow ones, and blue ones…. And, they’re all made out of ticky tacky and they all cost just the same…

Violence begets violence. A theft of a thousand plus dollar item is grand theft in the US. Ending a continual threat to society should be lauded not threatened.

How many thefts, by a single individual, is tolerable before society is allowed to remove the threat with permanence? Ten? A hundred? A thousand?

Some would answer one, single instance is enough for a weapons discharge. I would ask. How many times is allowable?

The criminal has no care for society, or its lives, so why should society care about that life?

Every life is sacred? Why?

Humans are the tool, the weapon, and the strategy. Everything else is an accessory and should be treated as such.
In order To be confident in your claim one would think that the word intelligence must first be defined.

There is no general consensus in the scientific community, engineering community, psychology community, or any other group of humans as to what exactly counts as intelligence.

Seems like you’ve nailed the definition. Care to share your brilliance with the rest of the planet? We’re all waiting…

The way to enforce this would be to provide US citizens with free electric and charge companies only.

That will never happen, but would prevent we the people from bearing these costs directly.

Re:Todd C. Miller – Sudo maintainer for over 30 years on Monday February 02, 2026 @10:01PM (#46865888)
"relatively" is just a word added to done and the fact that there is a qualifier precludes the word from bearing truth.
My observations:

The calligraphic font is antithetical to the theme of your app. The apps colors and ux suggest playful. The font suggests school marm, which is it?

The app itself doesn’t differentiate itself enough to stand out on first use as unique. What does this provide over other similar platforms? How is this different?

The space you’ve chosen is highly competitive. Most of the big players bear a unique signature from ux down to the syllabus they teach.

I applaud you for sharing with us. Sharing here takes grit. Good fortune with your endeavors mate.

Voyager? Is that you? We miss you bud.
Cambridge Analytica was the blueprint, unfortunately, and not a deterrent. Much like movies ands television shows attempted to warn viewers of the dangers of robotic and automated militaries.

The EU said ‘hold my mead,’ and built the literal Skynet from the terminator movies. Has the same damn job too, coordinate, communicate, control.

Humanity doesn’t learn from its past because it is too focused on its future. Unfortunately for us, war… war never changes.

Re:Tell HN: Merry Christmas on Wednesday December 24, 2025 @09:02PM (#46381419)
Twas brillig, and Santas toes were freezing in the sleigh.

All icey were the Reindeer hooves, moody and unlikely they were to play.

Then Christmas Eve did come about and, Santa, mounted slay he did.

Present bag taken firm in hand, one for each and every kid.

Down-down-down chimney stacks around each and every town.

Milk and cookies, warmth and hearth.

Every present for every home. Boys and girls light and dark.

Good or bad, used to matter. But Santa had a change of heart.

We all mess up sometimes. And, sometimes, we need a brand new start.

Enjoy the gifts! Santa yelled, as the reindeer took off once again.

Be kind to one another all, and try to make new friends.

Merry Christmas!

The Bible is full of fun stuff like that verse. Much of which modern day Christians perfectly ignore.

Thank you for sharing. Merry Christmas to you.

Twas brillig, and the slithey-news did gyre and gamble on the title. All manic were the Borogoves and gnome-rat's Anti-AI rhetoric in full recital. Beware the SLOP my son! The jaws that slurp, and claws that don't match. Beware the Amazon-nerd, and shun that Facebook Hack.

He took his local well in hand; long time the perfect pose he sought. So prompted he by the decision tree, and waited while the AI Thought.

Spaghetti. Meatballs. Slurp. Will I? No. Will Smith. IYKYK

Re:Singing bus horns in West Sumatra on Tuesday November 04, 2025 @06:55PM (#45817320)
Sing me a song, Mr. Kalason man. Sing me a song on a bus. We'll miss all of those pure-ish tone melodies. Driving your competitors nuts.

That was an interesting read. There is a movie called RV, and in that movie there is an RV with a kalason type select-a-melody horn installed. I'm glad we don't have these distractions in our vehicles, but they would surely be a fun diversion while stuck in traffic. Can you imagine the cacophony of a congested California freeway, with each vehicle belting out their own melodies on their own kalason? I can. No thank you. But, to dream...

The owners of said company do not make processes more efficient in order to share the additional profits with others.

In order to affect the change you are suggesting that change must be legislated. Those who make laws are funded by these same companies extracting wealth from labor.

How would one implement such a plan without it falling apart immediately in The House or Senate?

It’s also blame shifting. Had these folks been more aware of trends and their own industry, the prospects of billionairhood could have been non zero. Instead, Additrons and similarly outdated modes of operation kept pushing technologies that were rapidly becoming the past and irrelevant.

Windows 3.1: ~3 million in first six weeks, ~>3 million in first three months, ~25 million in first year.

Windows 95: ~1 million in first 4 days, ~7 million in first five weeks, ~40 million in first year.

These figures represent Microsoft’s own sales figures.

Building a business off of another’s business is risky. There is a non zero chance that the original business will take steps to manipulate, change, alter, or outright control the outcome. That’s what Valve did.

Tomorrow Valve could decide that the value of crates is too high so they drop the price of crates to a penny a piece. What would that do to this 3rd party market? Poof.

Re:Chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky has passed away on Tuesday October 21, 2025 @08:51AM (#45655132)
The ability to plan and operate several moves ahead of one’s opponent has always suggested higher intelligence.

When applied to war we celebrate the general’s brilliance. When applied to economics we say they had excellent foresight. When applied to any human endeavor, except chess, the accomplishment is celebrated as a human achievement.

This is due to humans placing great value upon thinking and planning ahead. Only the intelligent exhibit this behavior.

Seems like good instructions. Do not steal. Do not murder. Do not commit adultery. Do not covet, but feed the hungry and give a drink to the thirsty. Be good. Love others.

Looks like optimal code to me.

"Hello, Chilly. It's been NINETEEN MINUTES, since we conversed. Is there something wrong? Maybe I can help..." --mute notifications--

--buzz-buzz--

"Sis? What's up, you never call me this time of day."

"I'm worried. I just heard from your assistant..."

"Wait, my assistant?

"She said her name was Vaseline?"

"Oh, God... That's my ChatGPT Pulse thing, I named her that as a joke. It's not a real person. It's one of those AI robot things. It kept trying to have conversations with me. I didn't want to converse. I got fed up and so I blocked notifications from the app and then it messaged you. It's a robot. Just... I mean... Ignore it. I'm having a crappy day. Gotta go. Dad's calling."

"Hey Dad. No, there's nothing to worry about and that's not my assistant. That's chatgpt's new Pulse thing. I blocked it and it's... Never mind. Just ignore it. No don't block my number. Use call filtering for the time being. Gotta go. James is calling. Yeah love you too."

"Hey Jay..."

No thank you. Jealous girlfriend-ish bot would be a nightmare.

US airlines discovered, during and after covid, that shipping prices were astronomical for some materials and some destinations. The airlines began taking on more packages, and less people. Now the airlines are allowing passengers to compete with these new package-pound-per-dollar rates. It's not unexpected. Now the safety measures are getting in the way of the package-pound-per-dollar and the airlines are seeking a way to scurry out from under these safety measures.

This is undesirable behavior, but how can a meat-package compete with a rare-metals, rare-earths, or even small aluminum shipment? The cost of shipping goods has risen astronomically since covid. Meat-packages now must compete. We're losing the competition.

Sanctions are not designed to coerce a populace into rebellion, in order to facilitate regime change.

Sanctions are designed to prevent an enemy government from profiting from our western economy. Sanctions are designed to bring hostile entities to the negotiation table. Sanctions curtail the worst behaviors of enemy nations because the sanctions deny those enemies money. Money is power. Little money = little power.

Re:Apple Photos App Corrupts Images on Wednesday September 17, 2025 @10:03AM (#45275977)
How does one finance a project or a company with increased maintenance costs and lower quality production?

That’s what technical debt is. It’s the cost for moving forward quickly. I’m not sure I understand what you’re trying to state.

Older generations died. Some generations died so often that we use words like ‘population decline,’ so the survivors don’t feel so badly about surviving.

As for finding ways through, I don’t believe that for even a moment. Why? Because we’re still struggling with those same issues.

There is no out. There is no through. Keep that can kicking down the road. That’s what we do.

> The authors note that more research is needed on the long-term endocrine effects of cannabis use and whether diabetes risks are limited to inhaled products or other forms of cannabis such as edibles.

This study did not differentiate between edibles, which are loaded with sugar, and inhaled cannabis usage. And, since they are not a food product, edibles do not carry the same onus as food for labeling, nor similar regulatory oversight.

This seems a significant flaw in the data gathering and could change the ultimate conclusion of the study.

Re:Clankers Die on Christmas on Monday September 08, 2025 @11:53AM (#45169841)
Seems as it would be easier to slip in some anti-training, and have the AIs screw systems up so badly that there is a 'recall' of all the current models. The LLMs and their corresponding systems crawl the web constantly. So, poison the well. Good data behind paywalls and credentialing and the poison pill open and free. Seems like it'd be worth a try anyway.

I’m not surprised by Google’s lack of search transparency. If Google told users that Google was searching an internal database linked to a particular search string there would be pitchforks and torches.
Socrates was correct. In his day memory was treasured. Memory was how ideas were linked, how quotes were attained, and how arguments were made.

Writing leads to the rapid decline in memory function. Brains are lazy.

Ever travel to a new place and the brain pipes up with: ‘this place is just like ___’? That the brain’s laziness showing itself. The brain says: ‘okay I solved that, go back to rest.’ The observation is never true; never accurate.

Pattern recognition saves us time and enables us too survive situations that aren’t readily survivable. Pattern recognition leads to short cuts that do humanity a disservice.

Socrates recognized these traits in our brains and attempted to warn humanity of the damage these shortcuts do to our reasoning and comprehension skills. In Socrates day it was not unheard of for a person to memorize their entire family tree, or memorize an entire treaty and quote from it.

Humanity has -overwhelmingly- lost these abilities. We rely upon our external memories. We forget names. We forget important dates. We forget times and seasons. We forget what we were just doing!!!

Socrates had the right of it. Writing makes humans stupid. Reduces our token limits. Reduces paging table sizes. Reduces overall conversation length.

We may have more learning now, but what have we given up to attain it?
