Re:Ask HN: What's your cross-platform PDF / ePub reading workflow?

On Android pocketbook reader (imho most practical ux experience for reader), Macos - preview and ibooks. I'm still looking for epub/pdf reader with good ux on Windows.

If you were enrolled before just go to your courses page, find fp course and go to archive of your class (with all the content, problem sets, forums, etc).

You can't compare time-based courses to general information provider like wikipedia. Providing content of previously offered courses is controlled by colleges/instructors [1]

Re:IPad Mini production has kicked off
on Wednesday October 03, 2012 @01:55PM (#4608721)
Been looking for ~7" tablet as reading device. 7.2-8" diagonal is about size of regular book printed on A5 (two pages on A4 as booklet) which I find good balance between portability and readability. Nexus 7 is almost perfect fit but has major issue(at least from what I've seen) - pdf rendering is very rough making reading/navigating books experience inconvenient. Hopefully rumored ipad mini would be better candidate, one worry though is no "retina"/high resolution which imo would be major drawback.
Anyone could share experience of reading technical books/sci papers on nexus7?
Re:Autofill abuse allows websites to grab sensitive userdata

One workaround for this in chrome is to remove name/email values from address auto-fill form, so it will only populate when you actually enter address.
And it's generally good idea to separate general browsing from personal/finance/etc using user profiles.

The keywords are "co-worker" and "public" post(as "visible to co-workers and student parents) here. As much as I dislike violation of privacy by employers as parent I'd be concerned about this.
Re:Why the iPad 3 Retina display changes everything
on Wednesday March 07, 2012 @01:49PM (#3676617)
It changed everything in a sense that Apple pushed display technology to a new level so the others now could benefit(better notebook panels, displays).

They claim battery will last the same 10h or 9h with 4g on.
Re:Microsoft’s attack on Linux: The hardware way
on Wednesday February 08, 2012 @01:56PM (#3567869)
That(locking secure boot to be able to load specific software) is not what I meant(merely ability to turn off secure boot). I realize why secure boot is there, my concerns:
1. as a consumer I'm fully locked into business model of sw/hw providers. Think about all those android phones that are throw away now.
2. cannot do anything to device I physically own
3. hardware manufactures won't bother producing unlocked hardware(to cater those people who would like to run whatever they want on it)
Re:Microsoft’s attack on Linux: The hardware way
on Wednesday February 08, 2012 @01:09PM (#3567662)
Not all android devices are shipped with locked bootloaders.
The problem with enforcing secure boot is it is too broad requirement applied to all ARM-based hardware.
edit: "applied to ARM-based hardware certified to run or running Microsoft windows". per wikipedia it looks like it is applicable to hw certified to run windows.

Kodak is pretty much both feet in grave after they sold their image sensor business, which was probably the only competitive thing they have.
Now it's interesting what Leica would do after kodak sensors are gone.
Well, maybe their business solutions(printing, kiosks) can survive.
Re:Result of Cold Fusion experiment claimed a success of 470kW output
on Friday October 28, 2011 @11:14PM (#3170968)
Looks like article tries to answer this :
"Probably the biggest opening for skeptics will be the continually running genset that is probably rated for 500 kW (my guess), and appears to have been connected by cables to the E-Cat. "Where's the mystery?" So knock yourselves out, skeptics. It's the customer who has to be happy, and apparently this one was satisfied that those cables were not contributing to the 470 kW output during self-sustaining mode."
It is still need to be independently verified in controlled environment though.
Re:No TV for children under 2, urge doctors
on Tuesday October 18, 2011 @03:36PM (#3126749)
My kids were on tv-diet for about 5 years and it was overall very positive experience. There're several things here:
a. TV (and other one-way information sources) is really bad for babies/toddlers who need two-way interaction with the world.
b. for older kids(~4y+) replacing regular TV channels with dedicated documentary/learning videos in reasonable quantities is beneficial.
I'm quite curious on how virtual interactions(ipad/etc) affect child development, any research links?
Re:Samsung counters iPhone 4S with Galaxy S II comparison chart
on Wednesday October 05, 2011 @03:40PM (#3077188)
I think something between 3.5 and 4 would be ideal. Current 3.5 size is small for reading books(typical pdf technical book, page cropped to visible content). Even adding 0.25 inch would be a great help without sacrificing portability.

I can't see how this [reporting flagged subjects to dmv and insurance companies] is going to work. First of all they need a proof of violation that would be difficult to obtain. Also this company will get sued by flagged users into oblivion for violation of privacy.
Awesome monetization idea though.
Re:Apple brings App Store to Mac OS X
on Wednesday October 20, 2010 @03:53PM (#1812776)
This unlikely to happen as long as Apple wants to have portion of enterprise market which has different requirements from end-user one.
OTOH, if they manage to incorporate most of requirements by it departments into their app store and convince companies to use it this will bring them even more market share.

With its vertical design and standard supported blocks stacked on each other it looks like overgrown construction from the slums. Would be interesting to see interior design.
It's very hard to believe in $1B budget, you have to try really hard to waste that much money.
