Re:Apple reports fourth quarter results on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @11:11AM (#50353824)
My take is, the target audience for small phones is slow moving and they didn’t persist long enough.

I somehow live in a bubble where the mini has a huge market share, every third person I know have one. And guess what, they’re all non-techies.

Wouldn’t you still need the CPU horsepower to decode it?
Re:Electrification Could Cut Global Energy Use in Half on Sunday November 01, 2026 @11:24AM (#50327068)
It doesn’t suit “other people”. It suit every single human in the long run. Problem is, not short term.
Re:Proton goes all in on using AI on Saturday October 31, 2026 @09:26AM (#50315997)
I am very worried by yen’s careless attitude but qualifying an email address as “allowing people to rat” is exaggerating. Anyone can eat any time, emails are not new. It’s just an alias/mailer.
Re:I Returned My iPhone Duo on Friday October 30, 2026 @05:12PM (#50310197)
Same on a MacBook but Apple added something smart, a short press doesn’t lock the screen or restart the laptop, even if you press too hard
Re:Apple Security Research Device on Saturday October 24, 2026 @10:40PM (#50227762)
Maybe we should be specific when we mean “secure”. What you mean is like “secure MDM”, when the adversary is the user. The parent meant “secure against external adversaries”.
90-95% of the european friends I have were scared shitless on the first term, the second one was closer to depression.

>Similarly, I have an /info skill that tells the agent to read my prompt, update any memories it thinks it should, then pass the turn.

Could you give me a quick example? I think I’m not getting it, but it sounds interesting.

Re:Upcoming Critical PHP Security Release on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @12:33AM (#50176108)
Depends on the tone of the police, but if they’re just waking you up and make sure you take a call from your boss, then are on their way, why not.

Beats panicked boss banging on the door. If there’s one thing I cannot handle while doing something critical in production, it’s panicked boss in the same room as me.

They are very loud and very visible but also very far away from controlling the Democratic Party.
Re:Source code of the Estonian online voting system on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:33PM (#50144511)
What? So you’re saying that never happened? Let me do a quick search... Oh.
Re:Source code of the Estonian online voting system on Sunday October 18, 2026 @03:31PM (#50144484)
To be fair, you can cheat by a couple of percentages at most then. Otherwise it will be pretty obvious that the global results don’t align with the local votes.

Hmmm, maybe I’m underselling this, you probably can cheat by a lot of percentage points still and get away with it. But at some point if the official results are like Putin’s while local results show everyone hates your guts, it might start tipping people off.

Re:OpenCode 2.0 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @11:22PM (#50137631)
Sorry, my comparison is not perfect.

I was comparing faster hardware (Wirth's law) with better LLM, which is actually more the Jevon’s paradox.

My point was along the line of: Making something easier has never caused that something to be executed more efficiently.

Re:iPhone Duo sells out now backordered until next year on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:04AM (#50131288)
I think you simply missed the point.

Don’t care about the problem (as in, appallingly entitled problem to have) Does care very much about how the author didn’t appear to realise how entitled his post sounded.

It’s very simple, if you’d actually wanted to understand.

> A commit born from "Claude, please make the installer look sick as fuck with loading bars and stuff" will always be preferred by the developers over a commit that reverts such a change for a 10 MB drop in memory use.

Not my experience. YMMV

> I had always imagined that the advent of LLMs developing human-level coding abilities, combined with the high hardware prices as a result of it, would act as a forcing function to inspire a new generation of ultra-performant, bloat-free open software.

I mean, faster and better hardware has never resulted in more efficient software, I really didn’t expect it to be any different here.

Re:Why Sweden is abandoning its cashless society on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:07AM (#50099022)
I think it stops at “after 2 hours the fire alert system stops working and anyway it’s too dark inside so any accident would not be covered by insurance hence we should wait it out”. Cash helps but it’s really overstated.

Two power outages where I live told me that.

Re:Thunderbird for iOS on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @06:29AM (#50085331)
Oh no, thunderbird for iOS lost one potential customer. They are doomed.
Re:New Apple TV 4K on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @02:04AM (#50083037)
I would say Apple is on the Pareto frontier for a given level of config/setup effort though.

There absolutely are much more private options (I run one) but it’s more effort.

Re:Apple HomeView on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:59AM (#50083003)
So annoying cheap trolling like this works. This is like comment #3 for me.
Re:A statement on the Tor Project's relationship with Mullvad on Saturday October 10, 2026 @01:40AM (#50029937)
Absolute are mostly wrong, as a rule of thumb.

Insults should not be allowed. But then, the free speech is threatened. What do you do?

Posting a message asking people to set fire to someone’s house, also not ok.

Where do _you_ set the limit?

Recommendation: use a client where you cannot see the downvotes. That’s what I do.
So you agree with the parent? It’s just a weird way of saying it.
Maybe, but the emissions of older vehicles are, on average, very high when compared to newer ones. I expect it will be difficult/expensive to continue driving one.
Considering how everything is now connected, every economy, etc. I seriously doubt any remaining island will be “happy”. Anyone on this island will know friends, family outside the island.
That. I had a nightmare about Trump, very old, writing a memoir about how all of his shit was actually to save the planet, stop using ICE vehicles and force Europe to stand up for itself. And people were celebrating him.

I woke up, sweat-drenched.

Re:Floci: Locally emulating any cloud service on Sunday September 27, 2026 @01:26AM (#49863602)
Oh gosh, been such a long time
Yeah, or, in a couple of years from now, it hasn’t happened. And _then_ “now what?” you.

But I agree it’s safer to wait and see. If the above turns out true, that will have been the wrong decision and there’s a cost associated with it, like all safer options.

You mean like Flikr, sonarr, tumblr, Waze…?

Mostly agree, but

What? I hope that’s a joke. (I run/admin Nextcloud instances)

Re:Heretic removes restrictions from language models on Monday September 21, 2026 @03:25PM (#49792095)
I mean, the argument could be made that if it wasn’t for these safeguards, everyone and your dog would be hacking the GPs camera.

I do agree the safeguards are only there out of liability concerns, nothing more.

But maybe it would be worse without them.
