News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

ilikerashers

Yesterday in the news there was a picture of a known ISIS terrorist being funded by the state shopping in Windsor while SAS members were being chased in court for spurious charges.

Something is really, really wrong in Europe. There will be books written about this in the future.

Re:How to Train Your Robot on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:38AM (#50150298)
I read once analysing EEG (brain electrical activity) data is like standing outside a football stadium and trying to understand what the coach is saying from the roars of the crowd.
Re:How to Train Your Robot on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:14AM (#50150173)
Is the issue also a lack of available sensor data?

Our own nerves produce a huge amount of data. Our eyes and balance also contribute to a very rich picture to enable movement and kinematics. This is all fused into usable feedback.

Arms on fixed axis with disconnected vision feel like we are still very far away from true robot training.

You're pushing the burden back onto the consumer to find workarounds for a broken system.

Having to install battery capacity in your own house is a step backwards.

If water was unavailable for 4 hours a day, you would suggest putting in your own rainwater filtration system.

Very true.

The establishment view is that riots and racism are right wing agitators and foreign power influenced. The people look to rival immigrants and conspiracies, united by anxiety and fear.

They are both looking for scapegoats. This has unfortunately lead to so many atrocities in history.

Re:You Are No Longer Invited to Dinner on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @08:15AM (#49891905)
Families (mine included) are just too busy. Working, commuting, homework, trying to get some exercise in. Any spare time I try to spend it with my children.

I always look at happiness in terms of pillars, social, family, work, spiritual. Work somehow has taken over everything. It seems culturally engrained.

I know social media is a factor but while we all fall down the rabbit hole occasionally, it doesn't stop anyone organising a get together.

We have stagnant economies with slow adopters and shallow capital markets. EU tech companies are working with hands tied behind their backs.

The US deserves it's success.

Re:The Future Belongs to the Weird on Monday August 24, 2026 @09:51AM (#49419783)
If you're interested there are books on Oikophobia (there is one called Western Self-Contempt). It's a theory that societies generate a luxury class which loathes itself and attacks it's own history and culture.

This usually happens prior to a collapse in the example societies...

Re:We're not done with point clouds on Friday August 14, 2026 @10:10AM (#49298944)
Why don’t they marry the visual categorisation of objects with a sparse predefined model to simplify?

Point clouds seem like a noisy layer to use and better as verification.

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026) on Monday July 13, 2026 @03:30AM (#48889107)
I'm working on https://GovWeave.com/.

It's like a BuiltWith for Government. I am tracking all UK government spend and building a picture of software and rising/falling trends of various products in the government.

I worked as a government supplier and found it hard to find out what tech/solutions are in place without inside knowledge. My idea is that by opening the data, I can help more suppliers compete and foster innovation.

Re:US Consumer Price Index up 4.2% on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @01:09PM (#48479414)
I feel the same. Investments are shooting up and wages stink.

UK has very high taxation now so working full time doesn’t bring in as much as a decent portfolio.

Thing is, if you are a good developer/architect, you have lots of options to make this elsewhere. £100k is not a very high salary in London.

Most of the GDS crowd (who were good), left to go elsewhere due to boredom/frustration.

The cost of not having good staff is very high to government. DEFRA were recently hiring senior enterprise architects on £70k. They could burn a lot of money (millions) on poor technical decision making but somehow saving 30-50k is the priority.

Understood that this is a pitch for his own platform (which is fair enough), there is a mixture of a few things here which are common tech tropes.

- Enterprise buyers are risk averse and buy the wrong thing - Language X is better because the people that use it are smarter - New tech is difficult for established players

Not really a fresh take but at least it's well written.

I am building something similar in the UK. As a contractor, I have to manage tax, invoices, reconciliation, payroll, accountant emails.

I think software in the future will be general portals which roughly self manages via plugins and automation. Services like QuickBooks will eventually just be an MCP server and you can tailor the software as you wish.

Will follow!

GDS went from an internal distruptor, breaking the consultancy oligopoly to being another entry gate.

The companies who capitalised on this (Kainos/Equal Experts/ScrumConnect) are now their own oligopoly.

It's just big guys charging arms/legs for average work again.

LLM's are like accountants looking at the past.

The numbers are bad therefore it will collapse.

Re:Bet on German Train Delays on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @08:26AM (#47247097)
How about NFC? App with a QR code displayed?

Could be a force of habit for UK but that's mostly how we do tickets. Printing is usually still an option.

Re:Bet on German Train Delays on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @07:57AM (#47246773)
Maybe i booked through a shadow site. The ticket office printed out something else.

The ticket office did have impressive throughput and lines building up.

Re:Bet on German Train Delays on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @07:36AM (#47246595)
German trains are absolute chaos. Tickets are sent via PDF for trains running 3 hours late. I was in Frankfurt last year getting to Cologne and back a few times.

Coming from someone who has to commute via South Western railway into London everyday.

Sad state of affairs for Germany.

Re:Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025) on Thursday February 26, 2026 @02:41AM (#47163078)
Yeap. I worked in the UK public sector and I watched the UK gov briefly back their own cloud company (Skyscape) then ditch them when they had some minor issues.

Completely captured by US tech

Re:Danish government agency to ditch Microsoft software (2025) on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @08:49AM (#47151410)
Europe has just been catastrophically slow in developing anything related to it's own tech infrastructure. Its doesn't back itself.

Given how poor it's responding to things like the Draghi report, I wouldn't anticipate success. Just more flailing around and working groups.

Re:It's not you; GitHub is down again on Monday February 09, 2026 @11:20AM (#46946972)
Yeap, getting this for the last 20 minutes. Everything green on their status pages.
I've started buying clothes from China. Quality and style is starting to really improve.

Makes you wonder how much we've been ripped off for years.

Re:US Intel on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @11:50AM (#45028229)
The EU outsourced manufacturing without any Mag 7.

I'm sure it'll work out well for us...

Tech giants have no competition in Europe and no capital to do so. In some ways, what Trump is doing is a call to arms for the EU to kick their economies into shape. We've been stuck in 0 growth for years, the UK is in a 0 growth trap since the GFC.
Re:Why is everyone trying to replace Software Engineers? on Thursday February 13, 2025 @11:50AM (#43038058)
While I agree we're not all implementing physics engines, there is a spectrum of complexity that is both business and technical between a todo app and a banking system.

Developer brains are still much more efficient at holding the different layers of context involved to build systems.

Re:Why is everyone trying to replace Software Engineers? on Thursday February 13, 2025 @11:19AM (#43037544)
My view is that Ai companies saw there was a huge volume of code online and decided coding was a text generation problem and easy to replace.

I don't buy it. I also don't think it'll replace writers or artists. Just the low brow, chum bucket stuff which in programming terms is a todo app or web form.

Re:The average age of U.S. homebuyers jumps to 56 on Tuesday November 05, 2024 @05:04AM (#42050187)
We need very big changes to capitalism at its core.

There are warning signs flashing across all economies without any coherent solutions.

Re:Programmer in Berlin: Culture on Tuesday November 05, 2024 @03:05AM (#42049558)
Germany is in serious trouble. The US and China are in protectionist markets. EU is starting to realise their labour and manufacturing are expensive and not unique anymore. The business model is broken.
