Given the NHS(and many other western countries) still has a surplus of med student to training places with much worse compensation than the US, the answer is yes.

Prestige and potential higher pay for specialisations will still attract people to the profession, although maybe not if the university costs for medicine remain as high as they currently are.

I tolerate it more than all other gambling thats allowed in my jurisdiction because it's at least a little bit rate limited (only 3 draws a week), involves a bit more friction (tickets are physical only), and profits is specifically returned to the community via an extensive grant system (isnt just rolled back into general tax revenue).

You can't stamp out gambling completely but I find well run state lotteries preferable to sports betting apps, poker machines and any other digital gambling platform.

Re:Things to know if you get cancer in 2026 on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:48AM (#50099271)
I understand that insurance is not your friend and you must advocate for yourself in the modern healthcare landscape, but if appointments take months to get to because everyone is overbooking limited oncology specialists to get their second and third opinions, at what point is this counterproductive for wider healthcare outcomes?

Particularly with cancer, when earlier treatment is better.

This is just as much a phone problem as it is a pocket problem. I had no issue fitting a nokia or early smartphone in my pockets.
I don't know that central vacs were the height of vac technology, but I cannot understand how weak cordless/battery vacuums have such marketshare compared to a vacuum unit that gets 110/240v of power direct from the wall.

It's not just engineers, I think it's more an age thing.

For a certain cohort (eg those currently between 35 and 45) who did any sort of grade school computer/library classes in the 90's/early2000's, 'chunking' or keyword searching was one of the main skills taught.

It's not but they'll eventually need the storage & analysis compute for the infinite surveillance state.
Re:OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @11:45PM (#49826009)
Per local reporting, they took ages to contact the Govt and did so lamely via a public facing group email address, rather than any of the existing reporting channels for data breaches that would escalate this appropriately, or reaching out directly to a Minister's office.
Re:OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @11:38PM (#49825955)
Australia has legislation & regulation - If you're operating here, failure to notify the regulator and stakeholders about certain types of data breaches within 30 days opens you to fines and civil penalties.

At the least OAI should cop similar penalties, before getting into damages.

If you pay a bank for use of a secure deposit box to store private documents, would you be upset if they started advertising services to you based on the contents of those documents?

Or if your telephone service began messaging with offers for products on what you discussed in your phonecalls?

Yet it's extremism to think Google etc shouldnt be able to do this.

Also, in some orgs you physically cannot send the cv.

I can't send or recieve documents as email attachments anymore to external stakeholders, everything must be via sharepoint link.

That, plus a decade of compulsory anti phishing training means no half competent HR person should be blind opening an attachment that says 'CV'.

Taking time off your existing role to do multiple interviews for something that turns out to pay 10-15% less than you are currently on is insulting.
Social media could have just as easily spread misinformation about the Bondi incident. It was a failure of the NSW Police to not use the SMS emergency warning systems, which is not a good reason to keep everyone on social media.
What would a gambling liability waiver cover? Your losses/damages are not in a confined circuit or ringfenced from your general finances. Are you just agreeing not to sue if you lose your house/wife/job?
Given the rest of American culture is intensely commercialised, I can see why there is a desire to protect the remaining non-commercial spaces.

My local library has an indepenently run coffee kiosk out front, the Council (local govt) own the facility and lease it to the operator, and presumably have some lease terms about allowable signage and branding.

I'd probably feel differently if it was a mega franchise like Starbucks or McCafe right at the entrance of a civic building.

Australia has managed a 2nd and a 4th from 11 entrants. Our voting participation is quite low though, as the voting windows are usually at awkward AEST times and the main Australian broadcast of the contest is delayed until our primetime.

Cynical take: A single photo to now consume up 50mb of cloud storage, adding to the demand for more data centers that supported the creation of this authenticity issue in the first place.
Re:216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video] on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @02:56AM (#49622282)
Maybe the incentive are at the individual level, not the company level. How do you justify your salary/bonus as the TV product team manager by making the same product year in year out? If you have KPI's for new features or cost savings you are going run out of options eventually.
Re:De-Brainrot Vacations on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @05:02AM (#49607608)
I like friction in my life, and intentionally add it back in where I can for this reason.

It isn't me 'profiting' from having more free time, it's usually companies managing to find new things for me to fill my free time with.

Time spent vacuuming or washing dishes is time spent not scrolling.

Took a few weeks off, couldnt deal with the headaches, went back to one cup every 2-3 days of measured espresso.

No more getting anxious and worked up about small things and picking fights with my partner.

When you are trying to have none, it's suddenly everywhere and in your face without realising it.

How much caffiene do you consume? I had just been prescribed a script for an ssri for generalised anxiety, was scared of the side effects, decided to try cutting out coffee instead.

Anxiety gone.

I was only having 2-3 filter cups a day, probably less mg than a single large energy drink but that was enough.

In most corporate environments, the average worker isnt maximising to performance criteria, they usually are maximising their ability to stay employed, pay their mortgage and support their families.

If developing unmeasured skillsets isnt valued enough by management, why do you bother?

Not just clinics, but mainstream skincare and cosmetics companies have been doing topical peptide products for the past 10 years. You can get a peptide serum from a drugstore for ~$30.
