Maybe? Thatʻs fairly obvious.
> Inspection codes protect those people

Inspection codes are supposed to protect those people. As currently implemented, they often don't because they force people into ... alternate living arrangements due to strangled housing supply. It's not even the code per se that's the problem. It's the weaponized bureaucratic incompetence around its enforcement.

> making employees personally liable for business debts would wreck the US economy

Letting employees loot the company for their own profit isn't any better.

> Seems like society should try to figure this out.. if attitude is so important, why can’t we cultivate it systematically?

We do. It's called culture.

But culture doesn't optimize for something so narrow since it exists in a much wider context than just "what's good for knowledge workers in a capitalist system".

Depends on the GPU. I've found T4 GPUs to be cheaper than CPU compute on AWS when testing throughput per $ of spend.

No, and if you could you would win a Nobel prize.

But a century of experimental and observational data proves that it is.

At this point it's generally just taken as a fact that the speed of light is constant for all observers. The explanation given above falls out as a direct mathematical consequence.

> What should we do? Systematically disadvantage and discriminate against Asians

TBF that's exactly what Harvard did.

It used to be 10x.
I switched from a Surface Book to a Macbook Pro + Ipad Pro combo.

I preferred the Surface Book from a device ergonomics perspective -- but I finally got sick of trying to do dev work on Windows.

So I paid 2x as much for the same functionality instead. And that's why Apple won't make that form factor.

> I see where this is coming from but making platforms fully liable for user content will make it impossible to start a business that includes (semi-) public user interaction at all

So? What value have these platforms provided that justifies their existence?

> But Twitter is/was not a utility

The way twitter was used by local governments during emergencies absolutely made it equivalent to one.

Fortunately at least my area has moved away from twitter and towards SMS based notifications for that purpose.

Re:The case to legalize single-stair multifamily housing on Thursday January 18, 2024 @01:44PM (#39045840)
Because improvements aren't taxed. So if you add improvements (read: more housing), you don't pay taxes and you become more profitable (more rent, same taxes).

So you move all tax to just the land value at a higher rate than present, then let people build to offset the tax.

> My gut is that the majority of hydrogen proponents are oil and gas lobbyists or funded by them

I don't understand how any one looks at the electric car charging situation and thinks it makes sense to scale that out to 100% of vehicles.

A 2 hour wait to get a charger spot isn't a workable transport system.

> AM radio is basically dead (as is FM radio)

This is pretty out of touch. Drive-time AM radio is still a HUGE market in certain places. Think Rush Limbaugh et al. Although, that might be what you mean by "overt foreign propaganda by an unfriendly nation", the fact remains that it's 1) hugely popular by the numbers, and 2) directly beneficial to the certain congressional vermin.

Re:Sexual loneliness: A neglected public health problem? on Thursday January 26, 2023 @12:42PM (#34535343)
At minimum I think most people (the bottom ~90% dating-success-wise, both men and women) in our society would be better off with arranged marriages compared to our current cultural hellscape.

The problem is no one thinks they're in the bottom 90% of anything.

Re:What We Look for in a Resume on Wednesday January 25, 2023 @01:26PM (#34522172)
Do you think the people who play the ATS game are doing it because they don't want to work at the place they're applying to?

That's a pretty specious conclusion.

So you just don't believe that first order logic exists then?

> ChatGPT seems to understand how to reason about a large multiplication the same that a 6 or 7 year old might

This is purely ignorant magical thinking.

You're ignoring the very real facts of how ChatGPT works and fabricating a fantasy that you prefer to believe.

It's ripe for anti-trust action.
Rockefeller avoided the press entirely (to his detriment really) until well after he'd retired.

Sounds like that clause applies pre-extradition, not post.
Re:Office Vacancy Rate in San Francisco Just Hit a New High on Monday October 24, 2022 @03:28PM (#33321296)
It's not crazy at all. Our entire society is built around exploitatively extracting maximum value from each other and that often requires creative marketing to invent want where none existed before.
Re:What Is Bayesian/Frequentist Inference? on Monday October 10, 2022 @07:02PM (#33157425)
Each coin-toss is a deterministic physical process governed by laws of motion. If we had perfect information about the motion of all components in the system (hand, coin, air, floor, etc.), then we could, in principle, perfectly predict the outcome of every toss. Each individual toss would have a 100% probability of its predicted outcome.

Since we typically lack any of that information, we are stuck with the 50 / 50 prior distribution.

I can't imagine anyone ever describing vanilla JavaScript this way.

Conservation of momentum says otherwise -- the faster the ball is going, the more change in momentum it needs, the harder it needs to be hit.

It sounds like you do understand.

It's vacuous mouth noises to please journalists and twitterati, utterly devoid of meaning or content.

And you would be wrong.
