Re:New Boston Globe website design on Monday September 12, 2011 @09:00PM (#2989518)
the designer is Ethan Marcotte, he's written a book about fluid (or as he calls it, "responsive") web design.

one member of the backend dev team was posting in /r/web_design over on reddit. if you're really interested, it couldn't hurt to post a reply and ask him about things.

Re:Breakthrough: The Secret to Making Processors 1,000 Times Faster on Saturday September 10, 2011 @02:46PM (#2982155)
RAM can be placed in the stack, eliminating slow trips accross the frontside bus. The only remaining bottleneck should be hdd access.
Re:Reddit becomes reddit Inc. on Tuesday September 06, 2011 @11:05PM (#2968171)
/r/ideasfortheadmins is the place you should post.
Re:One base class to rule them all. on Monday September 05, 2011 @09:28PM (#2963778)
How clever. I've been inspired, I'm going to write a module named "mkfs" and it will do absolutely nothing related to making a filesystem
Maybe cities are the problem, and Detroit is the solution.

sssshhhhh.
Looks pretty spiffy. Is there any list of public rooms somewhere? One of the things I liked about turntable was that I could pick through a wide selection and gate crash the ones that sounded interesting.
Re:Command line tools for web developers on Saturday August 13, 2011 @04:00PM (#2881844)
If you run it against a public site, that may be what happens. However it's intended for stressing your own sites in a test environment, in which case you have full control over the config. Setting up your test environment to block your stress tester as a DoS offender would just be silly.
I was hoping for something that dropped the whole stupid "dancing avatar" concept. I don't want to watch cookie-cutter people bob their heads, I want a human-generated playlist that takes up as few cycles as possible.
you can't magic a billion people into the middle class lifestyle, but you can use a gun to keep them away from it.

i have no doubt those field workers in China would prefer the wages available to field workers in America, and if they could move to take advantage of that, they would.

muscle memory is less relevant when mousing. the range of starting positions is large.
Re:The Brilliance of Dwarf Fortress on Saturday July 23, 2011 @12:09PM (#2797137)
ipad play is probably wonky as df is heavily keyboard-based, but let me know how that goes.
Re:The Brilliance of Dwarf Fortress on Friday July 22, 2011 @04:38PM (#2795091)
there's an ncurses mode in the linux version. i use it to play over ssh, as my laptop is weak. the opengl is mainly for tileset support.

Re:A man patented Uber[Taxi] 29 years ago on Tuesday July 05, 2011 @10:05AM (#2729843)
Not surprising. It isn't a difficult concept.
Re:Once Greece goes... on Sunday July 03, 2011 @08:03PM (#2724928)
more succinct, yes, but it imparts the reader with much less background information, which makes it much less useful to anyone who is not already informed about the situation.
Re:Once Greece goes... on Sunday July 03, 2011 @04:34PM (#2724529)
he is obviously referring to the breakup of Yugoslavia

Re:Pure CSS GUI icons (experimental) on Saturday July 02, 2011 @04:05PM (#2722323)
i agree.

any reasonably complete unicode font should already include many of those glyphs. for the glyphs that aren't in the unicode standard, there are private use areas that could accommodate them.

most anarchists think that "anarcho-capitalism" is an oxymoron at best, and cryptofeudalism at worst. even those that disagree must acknowledge it is a point of much debate.

personally, i believe that capitalism is inherently statist. a state is simply an entity with a large amount of land capital.

"anarchist" does not indicate the simple lack of a stable government, it indicates a subscription to one of the many political/social theories/philosophies in the category known as "anarchism".

somalia is very obviously not an anarchist society, for that would require the majority of the population to be philosophically anarchist and organized in an anarchist manner. it is a collection of statist factions, each attempting to impose a state.
