It's vague puffery that implies depth without nessesarily achieving it. It's a very effective bullshitting technique with most people, which is why we collectively were so impressed with it we sculpted a robot that does it.
Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @03:15PM (#50343044)
close one, you almost had to think about something there.
The whole point of the grid is that it is effectively one giant electrical machine, physically. It isn't possible to target your local generations n any more than it's possible to target a particular generator three towns over.

In any case, a 4.5gw load imbalance from moment to moment is not a difficult problem to solve. This is why all utilities are required to have 'spinning reserve' available to serve new load at very short notice. In the meantime the grid would just drop frequency very slightly (like 0.1 hz would be an enormous instantaneous deviation)

An uncomfortable truth about the era of LLM code is that machine produced code is, on average, quite a bit more secure than human code.
Re:Postgres 19 is late, and it's AI's fault on Sunday November 01, 2026 @11:28PM (#50333112)
In the rest of the world making sure your product works like it is supposed to is considered table stakes. In software we somehow consider checking the parts of it we can think of 'good enough' and the rest unproductive
Independent labor unions are illegal in China. Are you referring to the ACFTU? That is about as much a labor union as is the 'peoples' republic of china is run by the people. The ACFTU is primarily concerned with industrial output matching state targets and not particularly concerned with worker welfare.
Re:Digital Minimalism on Sunday November 01, 2026 @11:05AM (#50326877)
I guess you haven't paid much attention to defi, then. DAI for a example is another defi project that creates an autonomously pegged trustless and permissionless stablecoin.

Rocketpool is a project that allows users to contribute to the proof of stake system with very small amounts of capital, and share in the returns thereof, again trustlessly.

There are miles and miles of useful projects out there. Any truly permissionless ecosystem is going to be full of scams, that's the nature of the beast. It doesn't mean that there aren't extremely clever and elegant projects being built by very talented teams of developers trying to make something that reduces the amount of global suck.

Multiple MW is noise level, even to a single moderately sized power production facility, let alone the whole grid region. This is not a viable attack. I can have an entire aluminum smelter trip off or start up and it won't phase my supply, a data center is going to be trivial unless you can spend enough to control all the data centers in which case youve just made the least efficient grid attack in history.

Further, there is no single resonant frequency, only the particular resonance of that exact moment in time. The grid is composed of many generating units, many transmission lines, many transformers. The resonant frequency of the grid is changing moment to moment as those things come online, get loaded partially, go offline, heat up, etc.

This is not a child on a swing set problem.

Pssst there are lots of roads that aren't public transport infrastructure
Re:When electric cars were for women on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:52PM (#50322321)
Apparently electric cars are for women and men secure enough in their masculinity that they don't require a truck with its own zip code? This is some post.
Re:When electric cars were for women on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:50PM (#50322314)
Anyone who can't find fun driving in even econoboxes isn't trying. Nearly everyone will run out of skill before they run out of car on the right kind of road.

Is this what you think multisig wallet ux looks like in 2026? You should educate yourself a bit better if you're going to be opinionated.
Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:36PM (#50320471)
There has never been a case where 3 people existed and politics did not.
Re:Digital Minimalism on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:35PM (#50320468)
A) really weird to see knee jerk crypto tribalism in 2026.

B)Specifically regarding self custody? Quite a few. Argent is one notable example https://argentwallet.io/

Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Saturday October 31, 2026 @06:55AM (#50314834)
To be fair, it's not even playing ground, security-wise. There is no mechanisim by which a bank can be compromised this quickly and completely, much more of the transfer process is permissioned.

Crypto 'banks' need orders of magnitude more security and it's not a trivial problem.

Re:Digital Minimalism on Saturday October 31, 2026 @06:47AM (#50314789)
You do a huge disservice to the technology stack that is Ethereum - it's not crass and shallow, it's really quite an elegant system
Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @06:45AM (#50314782)
technocratic governments are great when a strong leadership is present that also listens to the technocracy. But it's important to realize that technical skill does not correlate with political skills like consensus building, horse trading, compromise, etc that make governments actually work.

What will happen here will strongly depend on how good these people are at actually playing the game of politics. I don't have any particular reason to be more or less optimistic than any regular slate of politicians.

I sincerely hope this is what is actually happening behind the scenes

It might be decentralized in terms of infrastructure, but the more precise property is that it is permissioned. Permissionless stablecoin exist - see DAI, etc, but USDT is absolutely not one of them. It is the worst parts of cash and the worst parts of crypto put together into one unholy pile of suck.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:28AM (#50302995)
I think the point is that you stop caring about the fiat part of it at all. Government ownership of fiat currency is not a natural feature of the universe, it's just something we did for a little while.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:27AM (#50302984)
How do you do the math of generating the wallet keys with a piece of paper? Such a thing is technically possible but you wouldn't want to.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @08:25AM (#50302966)
It's not an enormous error prone hassle there are third parties that make it pretty intuitive. Just because you don't know how to do something doesn't mean it is impossible.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:09AM (#50299775)
It's not at all like storing gold, since you can have multisig wallets. You can make it arbitrarily difficult to lose or get stolen, depending on how thinly you want to slice your secrets and how many friends you have.
Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:07AM (#50299769)
It's bizarre how this is the new thing everyone has to echo whenever they see a crypto thread.

You can store crypto with zero risk of electronic access just using offline wallet generation and an offline wallet. It's not even hard.

Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:05AM (#50299755)
Trivially. You can simply read the keys on the offline machine with your eyeballs and set up a software or hardware wallet elsewhere to access the account.

Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:57PM (#50299710)
No. Permissioned cryptocurrency is all the horrible parts of cash and all the horrible parts of crypto put together with none of the advantages of either.

I want crypto because I don't trust nation states with the leverage and dials of fiat currency. All we've done is replace government with trusting whoever made a particular stablecoin.

Permissionless crypto is the only real crypto.

Yes unlike in systems where you buy your land and are completely at the mercy of the government not to seize it for eminent domain or taxes or...

Long term government land leases are a good thing. The only thing that they inhibit is dynastic wealth which seems like a bonus to me!
